  • Altimeter(Topex/Poseidon) and AVHRR(NOAA) data were used to study the variations and correlations of Sea Level(SL) and Sea Surface Temperature (SST) in the North East Asian Seas from November 1993 to May 1998. This region is influenced simultaneously to continental and oceanic climate as the border of the East Sea(Japan Sea). SL and SST have increased gradually every year because the global warming, and presented usually a strong annual variations in Kuroshio extension region with the influence of bottom topography.

추적기능을 가진 지상위성 수신장치기술

  • NOAA 위성에서 보내오는 고해상도(HRPT) 전좌신호를 추적하고 수신하는 수신장치의 개발을 소개하였으며, 또한 저해상도(ART) 수신 장치 및 수신된 화상을 얻는 방법을 소개하였다. HRPT는 직경 3m의 안테나로 1500km의 거리에 있는 NOAA 위성으로 부터 받는 반송파대 잡음비는 15dB 측정되어 2000km 이내의 위성 신호 수신이 가능함을 보였다. 위성추적은 산출된 위성궤도를 따라 자동적으로 위성을 추적하는 program추적으로 할 수 있으며, 전파신호의 도래 방향으로 안테나를 자동 이동시키는 monopulse 추적이 성공적으로 동작됨을 확인하였다. 전 시스템 중 포물면 안테나와 치치 그리고 철탑을 국내 업체에 주문 제작 하였으며 복조기를 제외하고 각종 프로그램을 포함한 전 시스템이 실험실에서 설계, 제작, 시험되었다. HRPT수신시스템은 과학기술처 특정연구와 체신부 전파연구소 연구사업으로 4개년에 걸쳐 수행되었다.

Estimation of Time Mean Velocities from NOAA Satellite 557 Data (NOAA위성의 557자료를 이용한 시간평균유속의 추정)

  • A time mean surface velocity field was estimated from AVHRR/SST in the Korea Strait. Time duration of SST data set was not different from tidal period and tidal elimination was investigated. The velocity field was estimated by inverse method and compared with results of ADCP observation and results of Odamaki(1989). In accordance with results. tidal component was eliminated partially in case that there were a little difference between total time interval of 557 data set and tidal period.

  • To retrieve Sea Surface Temperature(SST) from NOAA-AVHRR imagery the spilt window atmospheric correction algorithm is generally used. Recently, there have been various new algorithms developed to process these data, namely the variable-coefficient split-window, the R54 transmittance-ratio method, fixed-coefficient nonlinear algorithm, dynamic water vapour (DWV) correction method, Dynamic Water Vapour and Temperature algorithm (DWVT). We used MCSST (Multi-Channel Sea surface temperature) and NLSST(Non linear sea surface temperature) algorithms in this study. The study area is around the Korea sea area (Yellow Sea). We compared and analyzed with various methods by applying each Ocean in-situ data and satellite data. The primary aim of study is to verify and optimize algorithms. Finally, this study proposes an optimized algorithm for SST retrieval.

  • NOAA satellite data and GMS data have been received at the Institute of Industrial Science, University of Tokyo since early 80's and 1994, respectively. So far, all data are archived and users can look their quick look images through the Internet and get the data by request. The following processed data set will be available soon with the corporation with the Science University of Tokyo: Radiometrically corrected by 65 code and geometrically corrected NOAA data with the corporation with Iwate University and NDVI, SST and cloud classified images as their products. 1 km AVHRR Land Project Data Set of Asia and their 14 regional subsets. Geometrically corrected GMS images and surface temperature maps, sea surface temperature maps and cloud classification maps.

  • This study aims to evaluate applicability of AVHRR NDVI for drought prediction. Drought, one of the typical natural disasters, has damaged almost every year in different places and at time varied. An AVHRR satellite image can be a comprehensive tool to measure the drought because it is easy to obtain the vegetation status over the nationwide. This study explored a possibility of NOAA AVHRR NDVI applicability to drought because NDVI can provide plant vitality. Using May AVHRR imageries in 1998, 1999, and 2000, NDVIs are derived and compared with the rainfall amount to pursue the relationship between NDVI and drought. From the result, AVHRR NDVI showed a possible applicability in using drought prediction.

Study of Magnetic Helicity Injection in the Active Region NOAA 9236 Producing Multiple CME Events

  • In this study, we intend to inquire of how the temporal variation and spatial distribution of magnetic helicity injection in a CME-producing solar active region are related to the CME occurrence. We therefore investigate long-term (a few days) variation of magnetic helicity injection in the active region NOAA 9236 which produced multiple CME events. As a result, it is found that a noticeable increase in helicity of negative sign was first made for the first ~1.5 days and then 6 CMEs occurred while the relatively more injection of oppositely signed (positive) helicity was taking place for the next ~2 days. Afterwards, 2 CMEs in the region occurred while a more negative helicity is being injected again compared to a positive helicity. In addition, from helicity flux density maps, we found that the CMEs originated from this active region seem to be involved with the interaction of two magnetic field systems characterized by opposite signs of helicity.

  • Space weather prediction related to flares and CMEs is an important issue these days. It is, however, hard to estimate magnetic energy of invisible coronal magnetic structure. The virial theorem is one of the ways to determine the magnetic energy. In this study, we performed a series of MHD simulation of an emerging flux tube and apply the virial theorem to the simulation results and derive energetics of coronal structures. We then analyze real observational data on NOAA 11302 to derive the distributions of physical quantities, such as density, temperature, velocity and magnetic field. We also use knowledge form simulation analysis to estimate the magnetic energy of NOAA 11302.

  • 미국해양대기국(NOAA : National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) 위성에 의해서 해수표면 수온자료를 실시간으로 제공하며, 이를 이용하여 우리나라는 한국해양자료센터(KODC : Korea Oceanographic Data Center)에서 해양과학정보를 수집 관리하여 연근해 어민 및 수산관련기관에 배포하고 있다. 그러나 원양어업을 하고 있는 선박에서는 통신요금의 문제로 제대로 제공받지 못하고 있다. 본 논문은 이를 해결하고자 수온정보 이미지의 변환, 압축을 통한 통신요금 절감 및 컬러 이미지 제공에 따른 판별력 향상에 도움을 주고자 한다.

Spatial Characteristics of Low Meteorological Visibility over Hongkong and Statistical Retrieval from Satellite Data

  • Based on twelve observational stations low meteorological visibility (LMV) data during November 2002 to April 2003, the spatial distribution of LMV over Hongkong area (113.8$^{\circ}$ E-114.4$^{\circ}$ E, 22.1$^{\circ}$ N-22.4$^{\circ}$ N) is studied, using a PCA method. Optical spectrum of NOAA-16 associated with LMV shows that the significant effect factors correlated with LMV in the leading mode are the difference or rate between the visible and near-IR channels and single visible channel. A successful retrieval of LMV is done and a regression equation with a multiple correlation coefficient of 0.67 is obtained.
