  • The CH* chemiluminescence of premixed flames and their dependency on fuel types has been experimentally investigated on laminar methane and propane premixed flames. The measured chemiluminescence intensities are observed linearly proportional to the fuel flow rate, which could be interpreted as the CH* chemiluminescence signal is linearly proportional to the heat release rate under fuel lean conditions. The effect of equivalence ratio could be expressed by an exponential function as ${I_{CH*}}^{\propto}\;a_1\;{\exp}(b_1{\Phi})$, where $a_1\;=\;0.00054$ and $b_1\;=\;4.60$ for methane and $a_1\;=\;0.0056$ and $b_1\;=\;5.02$ for propane. Oscillating flames showed the temporal fluctuation of chemiluminescence intensity: however, the time averaged values are virtually identical to those of quiescent flames under the same fuel flow rate and equivalence ratio conditions. This observation suggests that there is no significant flame stretch effect on chemiluminescence intensity, in average values.

  • In Underwater Flight Vehicle depth control system, the followings must be required. First, It needs a robust performance which can get over the nonlinear characteristics due to hull shape. Second, It needs an accurate performance which has the small overshoot phenomenon and steady state error to avoid colliding with ground surface and obstacles. Third, It needs a continuous control input to reduce the acoustic noise. Finally, It needs an effective interpolation method which can reduce the dependency of control parameters on speed. To solve these problems, we propose a Intelligence depth control method using Fuzzy Sliding Mode Controller and Neural Network Interpolator. Simulation results show the proposed control scheme has robust and accurate performance by continuous control input and has no speed dependency problem.

  • The importance of appropriate use of damping evaluation techniques and points to note for accurate evaluation of damping are first discussed. Then, the variation of damping ratio with amplitude is discussed, especially in the amplitude range relevant to wind-resistant design of buildings, i.e. within the elastic limit. The general belief is that damping increases with amplitude, but it is emphasized that there is no evidence of increasing damping ratio in the very high amplitude range within the elastic limit of main frames, unless there is damage to secondary members or architectural finishings. The damping ratio rather decreases with amplitude from a certain tip drift ratio defined as "critical tip drift ratio," after all friction surfaces between primary/structural and secondary/non-structural members have been mobilized.

  • As intensity modulated radiation therapy compared with conventional radiation therapy, tumor target dose increased and normal tissues and critical organs dose reduced. In brain tumor, treatment planning of intensity modulated radiation therapy was practiced in 4MV, 6MV, 15MV X-ray energy. In these X-ray energy, was considered the dose distribution and dose volume histogram. As 4MV X-ray compared with 6MV and 15MV, maximum dose of right optic-nerve increased 10.1 %, 8.4%. Right eye increased 5.2%, 2.7%. And left optic-nerve, left eye, optic chiasm and brainstem incrased 1.7% - 5.2%. Even though maximum dose of PTV and these critical organs show different from 1.7% - 10.1% according to X-ray energies, these are a piont dose. Therefore in brain tumor, treatment planning of intensity modulated radiation therapy in 9 treatment field showed no relation with energy dependency.

  • The equation of motion of a one way (vertical) spanning strip wall, as an assembly of two rigid bodies, is presented. Only one degree of freedom is needed to completely describe the wall response as the bodies are assumed to be perfectly rectangular and are allowed to rock but not to slide horizontally. Furthermore, no arching action occurs since vertical motion of the upper body is not restrained. Consequently, the equation of motion is nonlinear, with non constant coefficients and a Coriolis acceleration term. Phenomena associated with overburden to self weight ratio, motion triggering, impulsive energy dissipation, amplitude dependency of damping and period of vibration, and scale effect are discussed, contributing to a more complete understanding of experimental observations and to an estimation of system parameters based on the wall characteristics, such as intermediate hinge height and energy damping, necessary to perform nonlinear time history analyses. A comparison to a simple standing, or parapet, wall is developed in order to better highlight the characteristics of this assembly.

  • The electrochemistry of benzidine and hydrazobenzene was studied in water-acetonitrile mixed solutions at various pHs and the results are reported. The cyclic voltammetric peak for the oxidation of benzidine shows a pH dependency of -62 mV/pH in the pH range of 0-3.5, no pH dependency between pH values of 3.5 and about 10.5, and of about -50 mV/pH between pH=10.50 and 14.0, indicating that oxidation mechanisms differ depending on the pH of the medium. However, the CV peak for the hydrazobenzene oxidation is shown to be independent of pH of the medium, suggesting that the proton is not involved in the rate limiting step of the electrochemical oxidation of hydrazobenzene to azobenzene. Results of in situ spectroelectrochemical experiments indicate that the oxidation products obtained during the oxidation of benzidine and hydrazobenzene depend on the result of dynamic equilibria taking place at various pHs.

  • The unbalance response analysis is one of the essential area in the forced vibration analysis of rotor-bearing systems. Local bearing parameters in rotor-bearing systems are the major sources which give rise to a difficulty in unbalance response computation due to the complicated dynamic properties such as rotational speed dependency and anisotropy. In the present paper, an efficient method for unbalance responses is proposed so as to easily take into account bearing parameters in computation. An exact matrix condensation procedure is proposed which enables the present method to compute unbalance responses by dealing with condensed, small matrices. The proposed method causes no errors even though the computation procedure is based on the small matrices condensed from the full matrices. The present method is illustrated through a numerical example and compared with the conventional method.

  • The smartphone is a necessary communication and productivity tool. Unlike other neutral, utilitarian technologies, smartphones are also a social display of wealth, i.e., of conspicuous consumption. Behavior around necessity and conspicuous goods are normally separate research tracks, and we can find no studies for technology products that exhibit both traits. We therefore propose a four-factor model that explains conspicuous consumption of "necessary" smartphones: dependency, social influence, the need for social connection, and convenience, in the United States, Mexico, and the Philippines. This paper provides confirmatory support for extant literature of the four constructs; it demonstrates the viability of the survey instrument across countries; and it shows similar effects among country models. Our structural model results imply the borderless nature of smartphone conspicuous consumption.
