Control of Pretilt Angles on Various Photo-Crosslinkable Polyimide based Polymers by Photodimerization

  • In this research, we synthesized various photo-crosslinkable polyimide based polymers. The control of pretilt angles for a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) using the photodimerization method on the photopolymers was studied. A good thermal stability of the photopolymers was measured by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) measurement until 450C. High pretilt angles of the NLC were otained by polarized UV exposure on the photopolymers containing biphenyl (BP), decyl (de), and cholesteryl (chal) groups, respectively. However, low pretilt angles of the NLC were measured by polarized UV exposure on the photopolymers containing fluorine and chalcone groups. The high NLC pretilt angles generated are attributable to the biphenyl and alkyl moieties, and the photodimerized chalocone group of the photopolymers. Additionally, good voltage-transmittance and response time characteristics were observed by UV exposure on the photopolymers.

  • The mechanisms of pretilt angle generation for a nematic liquid cystal (NLC) using a photodimerization method with obliquely polarized UV exposure on the various new photo-crosslinkable polymer were studied. A good thermal stability of all the photo-crosslinkable polymers was obtained by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) measurement until 450$\^{C}$. High pretilt angle of the NLC was observed by polarized UV exposure on the three kinds of the photo-crosslinkable polymers containing biphenyl(BP), decyl(de), and cholesteryl(chol) group, respectively. However, the low pretilt angle of the NLC was measured by obliquely polarized UV exposure on the two kinds of the photo-crosslinkable polymers containing fluorine and chalcone group.   • This paper proposes a new NLC (Nearest Level Control) scheme for MMCs (Modular Multilevel Converters), which offers voltage ripple reductions in the DC capacitor of the SM (Sub-Module), the output voltage harmonics, and the switching losses. The feasibility of the proposed NLC was verified through computer simulations. Based on these simulation results, a hardware prototype of a 10kVA, DC-1000V MMC was manufactured in the lab. Experiments were conducted to verify the feasibility of the proposed NLC in an actual hardware environment. The experimental results were consistent with the results obtained from the computer simulations.

  • A new photoalignment material PFCPMI, poly[4-(fluorocinnamate)phenylmaleimide], was synthesized and the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) aligning capabilities on the photopolymer surface. The NLC pretilt angle generated by non-UV filter method on the PFCPMI surface was higher than that of the UV filter method. A good LC alignment by non-UV filter method was observed at $150^{\circ}C$ of annealing temperature. However, the alignment defect of the NLC by UV filter method was measured above $150^{\circ}C$ of annealing temperature. Consequently, the high pretilt angle and the good LC alignment in NLC using non-UV filter method can be acheived.

High pretilt angle of the NLC can be measured by obliquely polarized UV exposure on a photo-crosslinkable polyirnide based polymer surface containing biphenyl (BP), decyl (de), and cholesteryl (chol) group, respectively, However, the low pretilt angle of the NLC was measured by obliquely polarized UV exposure on the blending photopolymer (PI and cinnamate materials) surfaces. Consequently, the pretilt angle of the NLC generated on the photo-crosslinkable polyimide based polymer surfaces using the in-situ photodimerization method was higher than that of the blending photopolymers.

  • We have studied the tilt angle generation on the homeotropic polyimide (PI) surface using a low intensity ion beam source as a function of incident angle. An excellent LC alignment of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) on the PI surface with ion beam exposure for all incident angles was observed. The tilt angle of NLC on the homeotropic PI surface for all incident angles was from 90 to 88 degree was observed. Also the tilt angle of NLC on the homeotropic PI surface with ion beam exposure of 400 eV had a tendency to increase as ion beam energy incident angle become more instance from 45 degree. Finally, a good LC alignment thermal stability on the homeotropic PI surface with ion beam exposure can be achieved.

  • In this paper, we have investigated the generation of pretilt angle for nematic liquid crystal (NLC) in a cell with oblique non-polarized ultraviolet(UV) light irradiation polyimide (PI) surface. It was found that the monodomain alignment of the NLC is obtained with an angle of incidence of 70∼85。 on PI surface. It is considered that the monodomain alignment of NLC is attributed to anisotropic of NLC is about 3。 with and angle of incidence of 70∼75。. Finally, we observed that the voltage-transmittance, response time, and voltage-holding-ratio(VHR) characteristics of photo-aligned twisted nematic(TN)-LCD with and angle of incidence of 85。 on PI surface were almost same compared to rubbing -treated TN-LCD.

Effects of Surface Order Parameter on Polar Anchoring Energy in NLC on Weakly Rubbed Polyimide Surface

  • We have investigated the relationship between the polar anchoring energy and the surface order parameter in nematic liquid crystal (NLC), 4-n-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB), on the two kinds of the weakly rubbed polyimide (PI) surfaces. The observed polar anchoring energy of 5CB is approximately 2${\times}10^{-4}(J/m^2$) and then increases with increasing the rubbing strength (RS) on weakly rubbed surface (RS=57mm) with side chain at $30^{\circ}C$; same results are obtained on weakly rubbed PI surface without side chain. The surface order parameter of 5CB on rubbed PI surfaces increases with increasing the RS at a weak rubbing region. The surface order parameter of 5CB is strongly related to the characteristics of PI material. Consequently, we suggest that the polar anchoring energy of NLC is strongly attributed to the surface order parameter on rubbed PI surfaces.
