Objectives : The determination of oxalate in urine is required for the diagnosis and treatment of primary hyperoxaluria, idiopathic stone disease and various intestinal diseases. We examined the possibility of using Fourier transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) spectroscopy analysis to quantitate urinary oxalate. The practical advantages of this method include ease of the sample preparation and operation technique, the absence of sample pre-treatments, rapid determination and noninvasiveness. Methods : The range of oxalate concentration in standard urine solutions was $0-221mg/{\ell}$. These 80 different samples were scanned in the region of 780-1,300 nm with a 0.5 nm data interval by a Spectrum One NTS FT-NIR spectrometer. PCR, PLSR and MLR regression models were used to calculate and evaluate the calibration equation. Results : The PCR and PLSR calibration models were obtained from the spectral data and they are exactly same. The standard error of estimation (SEE) and the % variance were $10.34mg/{\ell}$ and 97.86%, respectively. After full cross validation of this model, the standard error of estimation was $5,287mg/{\ell}$, which was much smaller than that of the pre-validation. Furthermore, the MCC (multiple correlation coefficient) was 0.998, which was compatible with the 0.923 or 0.999 obtained from the previous enzymatic methods. Conclusions : These results showed that FT-NIR spectroscopy can be used for rapid determination of the concentration of oxalate in human urine samples.
The purpose of this study was to measure fundamental data required for the prediction of milling ratios, and to develop regression models to predict the head rice ratio of milled rice using NIR spectra of hulled rice. A total of 81 rice samples used in this study were collected from Jeongeup, Jeonbuk province in 2006. NIR spectra were measured using one mode of measurement, reflection. The reflectance spectra were measured in the wavelength region of 400-2500 nm with an NIR spectrophotometer "NIRSystems 6500" (Foss, Silverspring, USA). Calibration equations were developed by the modified partial least squares (MPLS), partial least squares (PLS), and principal components regression (PCR). Math treatments were 1-4-4-1, 1-10-10-1, 2-4-4-1, and 2-10-10-1. The software used was WinISI (Infrasoft International, State College, USA). Automatic head rice production and quality checking system used was "SY2000-AHRPQCS" (Ssangyong, Korea). The calibration was made with the first derivative and the spectrum designated was in 8 nm interval. The determination coefficients of head rice ratios were 0.8353, 0.8416 and 0.5277 for the MPLS, PLS and PCR, respectively. Those obtained with 20 nm interval were 0.8144, 0.8354 and 0.6908 for the MPLS, PLS and PCR, respectively. The calibration was made with second derivative that spectrum designated was 8 nm in interval. The determination coefficients of head rice ratios were 0.7994, 0.8017 and 0.4473 for the MPLS, PLS and PCR, respectively. Those with 20 nm interval were 0.8004, 0.8493 and 0.6609 for the MPLS, PLS and PCR, respectively. These results indicate that the accuracy of determination coefficient for MPLS and PLS is higher than that of PCR.
Amylose and protein contents are important traits determining the edible quality of rice, especially in East Asian countries. Near-Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy (NIRS) has become a powerful tool for rapid and nondestructive quantification of natural compounds in agricultural products. To test the practically of using NIRS for estimation of brown rice amylose and protein contents, the spectral reflectances ($400{\sim}2500\;nm$) of total 9,483 accessions of rice germplasm in Rural development Administration (RDA) Genebank ere obtained and compared to chemically determined amylose and protein content. The protein content of tested 119 accessions ranged from 6.5 to 8.0% and 25 accessions exhibited protein contents between 8.5 to 9.5%. In case of amylose content, all tested accessions ranged from 18.1 to 21.7% and the grade from 18.1 to 19.9% includes most number of accessions as 152 and 4 accessions exhibited amylose content between 20.5 to 21.7%. The optimal performance calibration model could be obtained from original spectra of brown rice using MPLS (Modified Partial Least Squares) with the correlation coefficients ($r_2$) for amylose and protein content were 0.865 and 0.786, respectively. The standard errors of calibration (SEC) exhibited good statistic values: 2.078 and 0.442 for amylose and protein contents, respectively. All these results suggest that NIR spectroscopy may serve as reputable and rapid method for quantification of brown rice protein and amylose contents in large numbers of rice germplasm.
AKARI has 4 imaging bands in the far-infrared (FIR) and 9 imaging bands that cover the near-infrared (NIR) to mid-infrared (MIR) contiguously. The FIR bands probe the thermal emission from sub-micron dust grains, while the MIR bands observe emission from stochastically-heated very small grains and the unidentified infrared (UIR) band emissions from carbonaceous materials that contain aromatic and aliphatic bonds. The multi-band characteristics of the AKARI instruments are quite efficient to study the spectral energy distribution of the interstellar medium, which always shows multi-component nature, as well as its variations in the various environments. AKARI also has spectroscopic capabilities. In particular, one of the onboard instruments, Infrared Camera (IRC), can obtain a continuous spectrum from 2.5 to $13{\mu}m$ with the same slit. This allows us to make a comparative study of the UIR bands in the diffuse emission from the 3.3 to $11.3{\mu}m$ for the first time. The IRC explores high-sensitivity spectroscopy in the NIR, which enables the study of interstellar ices and the UIR band emission at $3.3-3.5{\mu}m$ in various objects. Particularly, the UIR bands in this spectral range contain unique information on the aromatic and aliphatic bonds in the band carriers. This presentation reviews the results of AKARI observations of the interstellar medium with an emphasis on the observations of the NIR spectroscopy.
Fourier transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) spectroscopy and partial least squares (PLS) regression were used to predict the amylose content of polished rice. Spectral reflectance data in a wavelength range of 1,000 to 2,500 nm were obtained with a commercial spectrophotometer for 60 different varieties of Korean rice. For a comparison of this spectroscopic method to a standard chemical analysis, the amylose contents of the tested rice samples were determined by the iodine-blue colorimetric method. The highest correlation for the rice amylose ($R^2=0.94$, standard error of prediction=0.20% amylose content) was obtained when using the FT-NIR spectrum data pre-treated with normalization, the first derivative, smoothing, and scattering correction.
This research was carried out to investigate the possibility of real time rice milling ratio measurement using the spectral reflection characteristics. In this study, various methods were compared such as \circled1 using the whiteness meter, \circled2 using the colorimeter, \circled3 using the Visible and the NIR reflection spectrum. The samples were milled in the domain of 84~96% by 0.5% interval classified by milling ratio. The NMG treatment method required about 20 minutes to determine the milled ratio and r2 was 0.0028 to 0.7959 that was very low. In case of whiteness meter, r2 was high but speed of measurement was 5 minutes that was very low. Measurement with the colorimeter required about 5 minutes and r2 was 0.60 to 0.85 that was low. The reflection spectrum were measured in the range of 400~2,500nm with 2nm interval and the MLR model with six-wavelength obtained from first derivative of spectra gave the best results(r2 = 0.967, SEP = 0.729%)

NIRS(Near infrared spectroscopy) scanning from 1300nm to 2400nm was appl ied for the DEHP(di-(2 ethylhexyl)phthalate) in PVC(polyvinyl chloride_packing material. All samples were devided into calibration group and validation group. As a result of conduction the multiple regression analysis on the correlation between the NIR spectrum data and chemical assay value obtained by the Korea Food Sanitation Act. The validation model for measuring the DEHP content had R of 0.997, SEC of 0.132, SEP of 0.176 by MLR and R of 0.996, SEC of 0.142, SEP of 0.198 by PLS and the detection limit was 0.1%. The obtained results indicate that the NIR procedure can potentially be used as a nondestructive analysis method for the purpose of rapid and simple measurement of DEHP in PVC packing material.
We have formulated hexagonal-shaped gold nanoplates in a single-step for photothermal therapy that gold ions to gold particles using pyrenyl dextran as reducible stabilizer and template. They exhibit anisotropic structure with broad surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band into near-infrared (NIR) spectrum enabling photothermal therapy. These gold nanoplates are also confirmed biocompatibility and high uptake efficiency due to binding with dextran molecules on the surface of gold nanoplates and cells. From in vitro phtothermal ablation study under NIR laser, gold nanoplates have the potential to use as photothermal agents.
The quality of agricultural products is classified with various factors which are measured and determined by destructive and/or nondestructive method. NIR spectrum analysis method is used to determine internal qualities such as a brix and an acidity. CCD color camera is used to measure external quality like color and a size of fruit. today, nondestructive methods are widely researched. The quality and the garde of fruit loaded into a cup automatically and measured in real time by camera and NIR system is determined by internal and external factors. This paper proposes modified boundary tracking algorithm which detects the contour of fruit´s color image and make chain code faster than conventional method ...
