  • In large-area crop classification with MODIS data, a mixed pixel problem caused by the low resolution of MODIS data has been one of main issues. To mitigate this problem, this paper proposes a hierarchical classification algorithm that selectively classifies the specific crop class of interest by using their spectral characteristics. This selective classification algorithm can reduce mixed pixel effects between crops and improve classification performance. The methodological developments are illustrated via a case study in Jilin city, China with MODIS Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Near InfRared (NIR) reflectance datasets. First, paddy fields were extracted from unsupervised classification of NIR reflectance. Non-paddy areas were then classified into corn and bean using time-series NDVI datasets. In the case study result, the proposed classification algorithm showed the best classification performance by selectively classifying crops having similar spectral characteristics, compared with traditional direct supervised classification of time-series NDVI and NIR datasets. Thus, it is expected that the proposed selective hierarchical classification algorithm would be effectively used for producing reliable crop maps.

  • Previous reports have shown that Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) can be used to assess physical and chemical properties of flax fibre and fabric quality. Currently, spinners assess yarn quality mainly based on strength and regularity measurements. There two key characteristics are influenced by quality of raw fibres used, especially the degree of rotting and strength. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the use of NIRS for assessing quality of weft grade yarn available on the commercial market. In order to develop the NIR calibrations, a range of samples representing poor, medium and good quality weft yarn samples was included in the calibration and validation sample sets. The samples were analysed for physical and chemical parameters including caustic weight loss, fibre fractions, lipid, ash and minerals. A detailed protocol for assessing yarn quality has been developed to maximize the accuracy of the reflectance spectra. The development of partial least squares regression models and validation of the calibration equations using blind samples will be presented and discussed.

  • This paper is to study the characteristics of fabrics dyed with astringent unripe persimmon juice. The cotton silk rayon and nylon fabrics were dyed with astringet unripe persimmon juice. The structures of natural fabrics dyed fabrics and dyed fabrics followed by washing were examined by scanning electron mi-croscopy. Surface reflexibility of VIS trans-mittance of UV VIS and NIR were analyzed. The study conclues as follows: 1. Colour of cotton fabrics dyed with persim-mon juice became darkended as a function of exposing time to sunlight. That colour was chaged after washing. 2. Blocking effect of ultraciolet light and visible ray was increased in all dyed fabrics. Especially dyed cotton fabric blocked UV light perfectly and the blocking effect was still remained after 9 washings. 3. Persimmon juice dyeing produced coating effect to fabrics besides dyeing effect accord-ing to the scanning electron micrographs. In a word the cotton fabric dyed with per-simmon juice has blocking effect of UV light stiffness. Therefore I think persimmon juice dyeing is a very useful textile finishing and ex-pect a wide application of the technique in fu-ture.

  • Water stress measurements of rice that use spectral reflection characteristics have been conducted to detect a water stress of rice during growing stage. Water stress reaction was measured using a spectroradiometer in the wavelength range from 300nm to 1100nm. In order to maintain all the experimental conditions, the measurement time have been settled at a fixed solar radiation times. Spectral reflectance were measured as a function of the moisture content. The results indicate that the spectral reflectance of rice was dependent on moisture content. As the moisture content is lowered the spectral reflectance of rice formed in NIR wavelength range increased. This effect can be best explained in terms of water stress.

  • Red Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) are suspected to intermediate stage between ULIRG and AGN phase. As well as, red AGNs are suspected to have more than 50% of whole AGN population. For understanding the characteristics of red AGN, Black Hole (BH) mass is a key property and can not be estimated by existed method such as reverberation mapping and single epoch method using 5100A continuum and Balmer lines. Thus we still don't know their characteristics and properties in clearly. To estimate properties of red AGNs without the effect of dust extinction, we obtained Near InfraRed (NIR) spectra of 31 reverberation mapped AGNs and 49 Palomar-Green(PG) Quasi-Stellar Objects (QSOs) by using the infrared camera (IRC) of AKARI space telescope with unique wavelength range 2.5-5.0 ${\mu}m$. Upon this spectra, we measured the FWHM and luminosity of Brackett ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ lines for deriving new BH mass estimators of AGNs.

  • This work presents the fabrication and characteristics of $Bi_2O_3/Si$ heterojunction prepared by rapid thermal oxidation technique without any postdeposition annealing condition. The bismuth trioxide film was deposited onto monocrystalline Si and glass substrates by rapid thermal oxidation of bismuth film with aid of halogen lamp at $500^{\circ}C/\;45$ s in static air. The structural, optical and electrical properties of $Bi_2O_3$ film were investigated and compared with other published results. The structural investigation showed that the grown films are polycrystalline and multiphase (${\alpha}-Bi_2O_3$ and ${\beta}-Bi_2O_3$). Optical properties revealed that these films having direct optical band gap of 2.55 eV at 300 K with high transparency in visible and NIR regions. Dark and illuminated I-V, CV, and spectral responsivity of $Bi_2O_3/Si$ heterojunction were investigated and discussed.

  • The principal objective of current study was to evaluate the potential of near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) as a non-destructive method for the prediction of the amylose and protein contents of un-hulled and brown rice in broad-based calibration models. The average amylose and protein content of 75 rice accessions were 20.3% and 7.1%, respectively. Additionally, the range of amylose and protein content were 16.6-24.5% and 3.8-9.3%, respectively. In total, 79 rice germplasms representing a wide range of chemical characteristics, variable physical properties, and origins were scanned via NIRS for calibration and validation equations. The un-hulled and brown rice samples evidenced distinctly different patterns in a wavelength range from 1,440 nm to 2,400 nm in the original NIR spectra. The optimal performance calibration model could be obtained by MPLS (modified partial least squares) using the first derivative method (1:4:4:1) for un-hulled rice and the second derivative method (2:4:4:1) for brown rice. The correlation coefficients $(r^2)$ and standard error of calibration (SEC) of protein and amylose contents for the un-hulled rice were 0.86, 2.48, and 0.84, 1.13, respectively. The $r^2$ and SEC of protein and amylose content for brown rice were 0.95, 1.09 and 0.94, 0.42, respectively. The results of this study suggest that the NIRS technique could be utilized as a routine procedure for the quantification of protein and amylose contents in large accessions of un-hulled rice germplasms.

  • The Rabbit grass(Trifolium Repens, call it 'Clover') is a representative harmful plant of lawn, and it starts growing earlier than lawn, forming a water pipe on top of the lawn and hindering the photosynthesis and growth of the lawn. As a result, in competition between lawn and clover, clover territory spreads, but lawn is damaged and dried up. Damage to the affected lawn area will accelerate during the rainy season as well as during the plant's rear stage, spreading the area where soil is exposed. Therefore, the restoration of damaged lawn is causing psychological stress and a lot of economic burden. The purpose of this study is to distinguish clover which is a representative harmful plant on lawn, to identify the distribution of damaged areas due to the spread of clover, and to review of changes in vegetation before and after the eradication of clover. For this purpose, a time series analysis of three vegetation indices calculated based on images of convergence Drone with RGB(Red Green Blue) and BG-NIR(Near Infra Red)sensors was reviewed to identify the separation between lawn and clover for selective eradication, and the distribution of damaged lawn for recovery plan. In particular, examined timeseries changes in the ecology of clover before and after the weed-whacking by manual and brush cutter. And also, the method of distinguishing lawn from clover was explored during the mid-year period of growth of the two plants. This study shows that the time series analysis of the MGRVI(Modified Green-Red Vegetation Index), NDVI(Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), and MSAVI(Modified Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index) indices of drone-based RGB and BG-NIR images according to the growth characteristics between lawn and clover can confirm the availability of change trends after lawn damage and clover eradication.

  • There is a lack of studies comparing the internal quality of fruit with its external quality. However, issues of internal quality of fruit such as internal browning are important. We propose a method of classifying normal apples and internally browned apples using a near-infrared (NIR) non-destructive system. Specifically, we found the optimal wavelength and characteristics of the spectra for determining the internal browning of Fuji apples. The NIR spectra of apples were obtained in the wavelength range of 470-1150 nm. A group of normal apples and a group of internally browned apples were identified using principal component analysis (PCA), and a partial least squares regression (PLSR) analysis was performed to develop and evaluate the discriminant model. The PCA analysis revealed a clear difference between the normal and internally browned apples. From the PLSR, the correlation coefficient of the predictive model without pretreatment was determined to be 0.902 with an RMSE value of 0.157. The correlation coefficient of the predictive model with pretreatment was 0.906 with an RMSE value of 0.154. The results show that this model is suitable for classifying normal and internally browned apples and that it can be applied for the sorting and evaluation of agricultural products for internal and external defects.

  • Stellar wind and radiation pressure from massive stars can trigger the formation of new generation of stars. The sequential age distribution of stars, the morphology of cometary globules, and bright-rimmed clouds have been accepted as evidence of triggered star formation. However, these characteristics do not necessarily suggest that new generation of stars are formed by the feedback of massive stars. In order to search for any physical connection between star forming events, we have initiated a study of gas and stellar kinematics in NGC 1893, where two prominent cometary nebulae are facing toward O-type stars. The spectra of gas and stars in optical and near-infrared (NIR) wavelength are obtained with Hectochelle on the 6.5m MMT and Immersion GRating INfrared Spectrograph on the 2.7m Harlan J. Smith Telescope at McDonald observatory. In this study, the radial velocity field of gas across the cluster is investigated using $H{\alpha}$ and [N II] ${\lambda}$ 6584 emission lines, and that of the cometary nebula Sim 130 is also probed using 1-0 S(1) transition line of $H_2$. We report a distinctive velocity field of the cometary nebulae and many ro-vibrational transitions of $H_2$ even at high energy levels in the NIR spectra. These properties indicate the interaction between the cometary nebulae and O-type stars, and this fact can be a clue to triggered star formation in NGC 1893.
