인조광물섬유에 대한 NIOSH 7400 방법의 A 및 B 계수규칙비교 (Comparison of NIOSH Method 7400 A and B Counting Rules for Airborne Man-Made Vitreous Fibers)

  • There are many counting rules for analyzing man-made mineral fibers. The representatives are the NIOSH Method 7400 A and B counting rules. The two rules have different rules of length-to-width ratio(aspect ratio) and diameter. The A rule counts only fibers $>5{\mu}m$ in length, and only fibers with aspect ratio >3:1. The B rule counts only ends of fibers $>5{\mu}m$ in length and $<3{\mu}m$ in diameter, and only fibers with aspect ratio ${\geq}5:1$. The A counting rule had been used before the B counting rule was introduced. The purpose of this study is to compare the A and B counting rules for airborne fibers from various man-made mineral fibers(glass wool fibers, rock wool fibers, refractory ceramic fibers, and continuous filament glass fibers) industries. There were significantly differences between the paired counts of A and B rules in all types of fibers(p<0.05). A rule counts/B rule counts(A/B ratios) were 1.52 for glass fibers, 1.53 for rock wool fibers, 1.19 for RCF, and 1.82 for continuous filament glass fibers. The counting results by A and B counting rules were highly correlated in glass wool fibers, rock wool fibers and refractory ceramic fibers(RCF) samples (r=0.96 for all types of fibers) except continuous filament glass fibers(r=0.82). Regression equations to correct for the differences between counting rules were presented in this paper.

공기중 6가 크롬 측정 방법 비교 -검출한계, 정확도 및 정밀도- (Comparison of Sampling and Analytical Methods for Determining Airborne Hexavalent Chromium -Limit of Detection, Accuracy and Precision of Analytical Procedures)

  • In this study, limits of detection (LOD), accuracy and precision of four sampling/ analytical methods were evaluated and compared for the determination of airborne hexavalent chromium, Cr (VI). The methods include : (1) a combination of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Method 7600/U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 218.6 (NIOSH/EPA Method) proposed by Shin and Paik, 2) two impinger methods using 2% NaOH/3% Na$_2$CO$_3$. (3) same as (2) but with 0.02 N NaHCO$_3$absorbing solution, and (4) the Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) Method ID-215. An ion chromatograph/visible absorbance detector was used for the analysis of Cr (VI) in sample solution. Limit of detection (LOD) , analytical accuracy, and precision were also tested using Cr (VI) spike samples. Recoveries (as index of accuracy) and coefficient of variation (CV) (as a index of precision) were determined. Two-way ANOVA and Turkey's test were performed to test the significance in differences among recoveries and CVs of the methods. In all the methods, the peaks of Cr (VI) were separated sharply on chromatograms and exhibited a strong linearity with Cr (VI) concentrations in solution. The correlation coefficients of calibration curves typically ranged from 0.9997 to 0.9999, and the analytical LODs from 0.025 to 0.1$\mu\textrm{g}$/sample. All the method had good sensitivities and linearities between Cr (VI) levels and peak areas. The accuracies (% mean recoveries) of the methods ranged from 80.1 to 104.2%, while the precisions (pooled coefficient of variation) ranged from 3.16 to 4.43%. The impinger methods showed higher recoveries ( > 95%) than those of the PVC filter methods (the OSHA Method and the NIOSH/EPA Method). It was assumed that Cr (VI) on PVC filter was exposed to air and reduced to trivalent chromium, Cr (III), whereas it was stabilized in alkali solution contained in impinger. Thus, a special treatment of Cr (VI) samples collected on PVC filters may be required.

작업환경 중 MWF 미스트와 증기에 대한 측정방법의 개발 - PVC 필터에 채취된 비수용성 MWF손실에 대한 보정 - (The Recommendation of Sampling Method for Airborne MWF in Workplace - Correction for MWF Lost on PVC Filter -)

  • The objective of this study was to determine if MWF(metalworking fluids) mass sampled on PVC filter lose during flowing airstream and desiccating and to present direction to correct the underestimated MWF mass. Flowing airstream caused MWF sampled on PVC filter to be breakthrough and lost. Loss of MWF on PVC filter increased in proportion to time of flowing airstream. Meanwhile, loss of MWF was observed during desiccating without flowing airstream. Vapor pressure of MWF is so low that it would not normally be thought to evaporate. However, MWF mist sampled on PVC filter has so great a surface area that loss by flowing airstream and evaporation can be appreciable. Loss between fresh and used MWF was also different. Those study results mean that NIOSH method(#0500 method) to take airborne MWF mist with PVC filter is not valid. Media to sample airborne MWF accurately still have not been introduced. It seems to be needed to estimate how much MWF on PVC filter may be lost during sampling. Regression model between sampling time including 1 day desiccating and total loss of MWF was "Total loss(%)=18.4%+0.06 sampling time(p=0.000, r2=49.6%)". This model help correct MWF lost when one measures airborne MWF using NIOSH # 0500 method.

GC를 이용한 극성용매의 분석방법 개발 연구 (Study on Development of Analytical Method for Polar Solvents by GC)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to simplify and standardize analytical method of polar solvents(methanol, isopropanol, n-butanol, acetone, methylene chloride and MIBK) in the working environmental by GC. Because NIOSH methods are various and complicated. Methods: The method is using the same stationary phase(5% phenyl 95% dimethylpolysiloxane), absorbent(silica gel) and desorption solvent(DMSO) for above 6 solvents. For the 6 solvents desorption efficiency, calibration curve, and limit of detection were studied Results: As the results, 6 solvents{2 groups ; first group(methanol/isopropanol/butanol) and second group(acetone/methylene chloride/MIBK)} could be separated and quantified within 10 minutes. Desorption efficiency from silica gell of 6 solvents using dimethylsulfoxide(DMSO) was methanol 86.2%, isopropanol 103.2%, n-butanol 101.8%, acetone 98.2%, methylene chloride 103.9% and MIBK 106.2% in the range of 0.2, 0.5, 2.0 times of TWA, consequently, satisfied NIOSH estimation level(beyond 75%). Correlation coefficient(r)in the range of 0.2~2.0 times of TWA, was above 0.999 for 6 solvent. LOD(mg/DMSO ml) using calibration curve in the range of 0.2~2 times of TWA was methanol 0.11, isopropyl alcohol 0.20, n-butanol 0.03, acetone 0.50, methylene chloride 0.05, MIBK 0.04 respectably. Conclusions: This method can be used at the sampling and analytical method for polar solvents by GC. Also, will be able to be applied with NIOSH methods.

국내 일부 채석장 작업자들의 분진 및 결정형 유리규산 노출평가 사례 (Assessing Dust and Crystalline Silica Exposures among Workers in Some Quarries in Korea)

  • Objectives: Work environment assessments were conducted to investigate epidemiologically several cases of lung cancer and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) among workers in domestic quarries. Methods: We visited three quarries in South Korea where an epidemiological investigation was requested and measured total dust, respirable dust, and crystalline silica on rock drilling workers (4 people) and rock chipping workers (13 people). Measurement and analysis were conducted according to NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health) method 0500, NIOSH method 0600 for respirable dust, and NIOSH method 7500 for crystalline silica. Results: Among rock drilling workers the AMs (arithmetic mean) of total dust concentrations, respirable dust concentrations, and crystalline silica concentrations were 3.462 mg/m3 (range: 0.764~6.085 mg/m3), 0.613 mg/m3 (range: 0.153~1.251 mg/m3), and 0.105 mg/m3 (range: 0.012~0.228 mg/m3), respectively. Among rock chipping workers, the AMs of total dust concentrations, respirable dust concentrations, and crystalline silica concentrations were 2.446 mg/m3 (range: 0.156~8.494 mg/m3), 0.488 mg/m3 (range: 0.028~1.536 mg/m3), and 0.099 mg/m3 (range: 0.004~0.274 mg/m3), respectively. Conclusions: Although it cannot be said that the dust concentrations were high for both rock drilling workers and rock chipping workers, the concentrations of crystalline silica were found to be high. If such work is performed for a long period of time, diseases such as lung cancer and COPD may occur, so the work environment needs to be improved.

초음파 전처리에 의한 용접 흄 중 6가 크롬의 분석 (Sonication in the Analysis of Hexavalent Chromium in Welding Fume)

  • 용접 흄에 존재하는 6가 크롬의 분석방법을 평가하기 위하여 깨끗한 PVC여과지와 용접 흄 매트릭스의 여과지에 일정량의 6가 크롬과 3가 크롬을 첨가한 후 NIOSH 7600 및 7604의 알카리 추출방법, 마그네슘 첨가방법, 아세트산 나트륨 완충액 추출로 전처리를 하여 분광광도계(DPC), 유도결합플라스마-광학발광분석법(ICP-OES), 이온크로마토그래피(IC)로 분석하였다. 위 전처리 방법은 모두 부적절하여 새로운 방법으로 알카리 용액상에서 초음파 추출하는 방법을 제안하였다. NIOSH에서 추천하는 2% NaOH/3% $Na_2CO_3$ 추출방법은 6가 크롬만 있을 때 적합하고 3가 크롬이 있으면 일부가 6가 크롬으로 산화된다. 산화 경향은 용접 흄이 있을 때 크게 나타났다. 분광광도계를 이용한 diphenylcarbazide방법은 저농도와 고농도의 6가 크롬이 있을 때 부적합하고 알카리 추출을 하면 ICP-OES분석방법이나 IC분석방법이 적합하다. 용접 흄 중 6가 크롬을 전처리하는 방법으로 NIOSH 방법의 $135^{\circ}C$로 가열하는 대신 초음파처리를 하면 3가의 6가로의 산화를 훨씬 억제할 수 있다. 즉, 2% NaOH/3% $Na_2CO_3$로 초음파처리를 60분 이내에 실시하여 IC 또는 ICP-OES(또는 AAS)로 측정하면 된다.

한국 작업자의 요통예방을 위한 작업하중 설계지침

  • 본 연구의 목적은 드는 작업에 있어서 한국 작업자의 적정하중을 구하여 중량물 안전기준을 정하는 것이다. 본 연구에서는 주어진 작업조건하에서 피실험자가 들어올릴 수 있는 적정하중을 결정하기 위 한 기준으로서 피실험자 자신에 의해서 인지되는 스트레스 정도를 이용하는 심리육체적 방법(Psychophysical method), 주어진 작업조건하에서 요추에 가해지는 압력을 이용하는 생체역학적 방법(Biomechanical method), 주어진 작업조건하에서 피실험자의 에너지 소모량을 이용하는 생리학적 접근법등이 이용되었다. 피실험자는 학생(n=3) 두개의 군으로 나뉘어진다. 실험에 들어가기 전에 피실험자에 대한 인체측정과 근력측정을 수행 하였다. 실험은 수직면에서 드는 빈도(1,2, 와 4회/분)와 드는 높이(0-8cm 와 47-102cm)를 조합한 6가지의 작업을 무작위로 선택하여 심리육체적 방법으로 각 작업에 대한 적정하중을 구하였다. 연구결과로서 피실험 자의 신체자료와 근력의 비교로부터 신체조건은 학생이 우수하였으나, 근력은 작업자가 우수하였다. 본 연구 에서 채택된 들기의 빈도가 변함에 따라 최대허용 하중은 변하였다. 작업자군에 대하여는 빈도가 증가할수록 최대허용 하중은 감소하였으며, 학생군에 대하여는 분당 1회와 분당 4회간의 유의한 차이가 있었다. 들기의 시작-종점의 변화에따른 최대허용 하중은 통계적으로 유의하지 않았다. 위의 두 결과는 들기의 빈도가 들기의 시작-종점보다 민감한 변수임을 가리키며 이는 미국 NIOSH의 결과와 일치한다. 심리육체적 방법을 사용하여 우리나라의 젊고 건강한 남성의 대부분(99%)을 고려하여 산출된 최대허용 하중은 미국 NIOSH 안전기준과 큰 차 이가 없음을 발견하였다. 또한 이 최대허용 하중은 인체역학적방법과 생리학적 방법을 사용하여 검토한 결과, 무리가 없는 수준임이 입증되었다. 본 연구의 결과를 토대로우리나라 젊고 건강한 남성에게 적합한 무게상수는 작업자군에 대하여 25.05kg, 학생군에 대하여 20.24kg 으로 나타나 이는 미국 NIOSH 안전기준과 대체로 일치함을 발견하였다.

시중에 판매되는 다양한 비인증 마스크의 분진 포집효율과 안면부 흡기저항 평가 (Evaluation of the Filtration Efficiency and Facial Inhalation Resistance of Various Commercial Masks)

  • Objectives: Wearing medical masks has been recommended since the declaration of coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) as a pandemic disease. Certified medical masks are evaluated according to filtration efficiency and facial inhalation resistance. However, some people use non-certified common masks. This study aimed to evaluate various non-certified commercial masks based on the certification criteria for medical masks. Methods: Twenty mask products (three anti-droplet, three disposable dental, eight fashion, three cotton, and three children's masks) were selected. For performance evaluation, filtration efficiency and facial inhalation resistance tests were conducted. The evaluation method followed the certification method for KF-certified masks of the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) and the N95 respirator of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Results: None of the 20 masks met the KF94 certification standard set by the MFDS. Four and three masks respectively met the KF80 certification standard and the N95 standard of NIOSH. Filtration efficiency was significantly higher in three-layer masks than in single layer masks. Pleated-type masks had higher filtration efficiency than cone-type masks. There was no correlation between the structure of masks and facial inhalation resistance. Conclusion: While no masks complied with the KF94 certification standard, a few masks met the KF80 and the N95 certification standards of NIOSH. Although some people wear non-certified commercial masks, protection from aerosols is not guaranteed by such masks. Evaluation of the protection efficiency of non-certified mask against microbiological infection is needed for the prevention of infectious disease.

NIOSH Guideline의 국내 산업 적용 적합성에 관한 연구

  • 신체 부위를 이용한 Manual Materials handling(MMH) 작업시 무리한 작업하중의 취급으로 인하 여 많은 사고 또는 요통이 발생하기 때문에 작업자의 능력에 맞는 적정 하중에 대한 연구가 필요 하다. MMH작업의 적정하중에관한 연구는 미국 등의 나라에서는 많이 이루어져 왔으나 우리나라에서 는 연구되어 있지 않다. 미국의 경우 NIOSH Guideline을 만들어 MMH시 작업지침으로 활용하고 있으 나 이 지침을 그대로 우리나라에 적용하기에는 신체조건이 달라 우리나라 고유의 연구가 필요하겠다. 적정하중의 연구에는 많은 시간과 경비가 필요하기 때문에 외국의 경우 심리 육체적방법(Psychophysical Method)을 사용하여 시간과 경비를 줄이고도 실제 8시간 작업시의 결과와 비슷한 결과를 얻었다. 본 연구에서는 MMH작업의 적정 하중결정에 있어서 심리육체적 방법을 사용하여 한국인 작업자에 대한 하중과 HIOSH Guideline의 RWL값과의 비교를 하였다. 학생군과 실제 작업자군의 피실험자에 대하여 심리육체적 방법을 적용하여 들기작업을 실험하였다. 6가지 들기 작업을 20분 동안 실시하여 피실험자들이 자신에게 적합하다고 생각하는 적정하중을 측정하였다. 그 결과, 학생군은 RWL값보다 평균 2.5배를, 작업자군은 3.4 배를 적정하중으로 정하였다. 따라서 HIOSH Guideline을 적용한 RWL값은 우리나라 작업자에게는 많은 여유가 있는 하중임을 보여 주었다.

공기중 이소시아네이트류의 측정 및 분석방법에 관한 비교연구 (A Comparison of Sampling and Analytical Methods for Airborne Isocyanates)

  • This study was performed to evaluate accuracy and precision of filter method and impinger method for analyzin airborne isocyanates in mixture (2, 6-TDI, HDI, 2, 4-TDI, MDI). Filter method was performed using the OSHA Method 42 and impinger method using the NIOSH Method 5521. The samples were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detector (HPLC-UVD). After the optimum operating conditions for each method were investigated, samples with various concentration levels were quantified at the conditions. The precision was expressed by the pooled coefficient of variation(C.V.) and the accuracy by overall accuracy. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The optimum condition of filter method was determined at 35/65 ACN/buffer (0.01 M ammonium acetate) in mobile phase. And in case of impinger method, it was at 30/70 ACN/buffer(0.2 M sodium acetate). The effect of concentrations of acetate on the separation of the peaks was not significant, but, the effect of ACN/buffer ratio was significant. 2. The correlation coefficients for the two methods were above 0.9 in all isocyanate compounds. Average recovery efficiencies for 2, 6-TDI, HDI, 2, 4-TDI and MDI in filter method were 92.4%, 102.6%, 87.3% and 101.0%, respectively. Those in impinger method were 106.6%, 106.7%, 99.0% and 103.6%, respectively. As a result, the recovery efficiency of impinger method was higher than those of filter method in analyzing isocyanate compounds. 3. The pooled coefficients of variations of the methods were slightly higher than expected. The overall accuracies of the methods were within $\pm 25%$ for each isocyanate compound. Since these results satisfy NIOSH criteria, the accuracy of the experiment is appropriate. 4. As seen above, impinger method is more efficient than filter method. But, there are many disadvantages in impinger method. Therefore, solid sorbent such as a glass fiber filter must be developed in order to have the high efficiency not less than that of impinger method in the future.
