Defect Monitoring In Railway Wheel and Axle

  • The railway system requires safety and reliability of service of all railway vehicles. Suitable technical systems and working methods adapted to it, which meet the requirements on safety and good order of traffic, should be maintained. For detection of defects, non-destructive testing methods-which should be quick, reliable and cost-effective - are most often used. Since failure in railway wheelset can cause a disaster, regular inspection of defects in wheels and axles are mandatory. Ultrasonic testing, acoustic emission and eddy current testing method and so on regularly check railway wheelset in service. However, it is difficult to detect a crack initiation clearly with ultrasonic testing due to noise echoes. It is necessary to develop a non-destructive technique that is superior to conventional NDT techniques in order to ensure the safety of railway wheelset. In the present paper, the new NDT technique is applied to the detection of surface defects for railway wheelset. To detect the defects for railway wheelset, the sensor for defect detection is optimized and the tests are carried out with respect to surface and internal defects each other. The results show that the surface crack depth of 1.5 mm in press fitted axle and internal crack in wheel could be detected by using the new method. The ICFPD method is useful to detect the defect that initiated in railway wheelset.

Comparison of X-ray computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging to detect pest-infested fruits: A pilot study

  • Non-destructive testing (NDT) technology is a widely used inspection method for agricultural products. Compared with the conventional inspection method, there is no extensive sample preparation for NDT technology, and the sample is not damaged. In particular, NDT technology is used to inspect the internal structure of agricultural products infested by pests. The introduction and spread of pests during the import and export process can cause significant damage to the agricultural environment. Until now, pest detection in agricultural products and quarantine processes have been challenging because they used external inspection methods. However, NDT technology is advantageous in these inspection situations. In this pilot study, we investigated the feasibility of X-ray computed tomography (X-ray CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to identify pest infestation in agricultural products. Three kinds of artificially pest-infested fruits (mango, tangerine, and chestnut) were non-destructively inspected using X-ray CT and MRI. X-ray CT was able to identify all pest infestations in fruits, while MRI could not detect the pest-infested chestnut. In addition, X-ray CT was superior to the quarantine process than MRI based on the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), image acquisition time, and cost. Therefore, X-ray CT is more appropriate for the pest quarantine process of fruits than MRI.

  • In most of ultrasonic NDT(Non-Destructive Testing) equipments using A-scan display technic, it is one of the inconveniences that the user must be proficient in reading the displayed signals for the accurate decisions. In this study, a simple microprocessorized NDT machine for the flaw detection was developed. The operation of system is based on the conventional NDT system. The microprocessor detects the time delay between transmitted pulse and echos by counter-measure method. Then according to the scanning position, the location of flaw orthe other side of testing object is plotted on the CRT. The main advantages of the developed system are simplicity in handling, recording capability of measured data, and low cost.

  • 비파괴검사 분야의 방사선 검사(RT) 방식은 image plate (IP)를 사용한 Computed Radiography(CR) 영상시스템의 도입에 따라 필름 방식의 아날로그 영상이 점차 디지털 영상으로 교체되고 있다. 비파괴검사에서 결함을 효과적으로 검출할 수 있는 영상의 품질은 촬영 조건, 영상획득매체, 사용 선원의 종류 및 촬영 거리, 검사체 두께등이 영향을 미친다. 본 논문에서는 비파괴 검사 분야에 적용할 수 있는 감마선원의 기본 특성을 조사하였고, FUJI사에서 개발한 CR 영상 시스템에 $^{75}Se$, $^{192}Ir$ 동위원소를 적용하여 영상을 획득하였다. 획득된 영상의 gray scale을 이미지 소프트웨어를 통해 추출한 후에 대조도 및 신호대잡음비를 계산하고 비교 분석하였다. 또한 투과도계를 이용한 비교 영상을 통하여 식별도를 분석하였다.

지하매설 가스배관 내부검사용 로봇시스템 개발 (Development of Inpipe Inspection Robot System for Underground Gas Pipelines)

  • The robotic automation in NonDestructive Testing(NDT) is a promising field of research and it helps to expand the applications of NDT enormously. Especially, in the case of pipelines which are widely used in various industrial facilities, it is required to secure adequate ways of inspection in the usual maintenance activitites. In this paper, we present a robot system for inpipe inspection of underground urban gas pipelines. The robot is configured as an articulated structure like a snake with a tether cable. Two active driving vehicles are located in front and rear of the system, respectively and passive modules such as a NonDestructive Testing module and a control module are chained between the active vehicles. The proposed system has outstanding mobility by employing a new steering mechanism called Double Active Universal Joint, which makes it possible to cope with complicated configurations of underground pipelines. Characteristic features of the system are described and the construction of the system is briefly outlined.

비파괴검사 분야에서 방사선원의 위치 확인을 위한 산화납 기반 방사선 검출기 설계에 관한 연구 (The Study on Design of lead monoxide based radiation detector for Checking the Position of a Radioactive Source in an NDT)

  • 최근, 감마선 조사기의 자동 원격 조사 제어기가 오동작하여 방사선작업종사자가 방사선 피폭 사고가 지속적으로 보고되고 있다. 이에 NDT 분야에서는 방사선에 대한 잠재적 사고를 미연에 방지하기 위한 방사선원 모니터링 시스템 구축에 많은 시간과 재원을 투자하고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 다양한 비파괴검사장비에 범용적으로 적용할 수 있는 방사선원 위치 모니터링 시스템의 개발을 위한 선행연구로써 몬테카를로 시뮬레이션을 통해 산화납 기반 방사선 검출기에 대한 감마선 응답 특성을 모의 추정하였다. 연구 결과, 방사선 검출기의 최적화 두께는 방사선원에서 방사되는 감마선 에너지에 따라 상이하며 에너지가 증가함에 따라 최적화 두께가 점차 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 결론적으로 PbO 기반 방사선 검출기의 최적화 두께는 Ir-192에 대하여 $200{\mu}m$, Se-75 $150{\mu}m$, Co-60 $300{\mu}m$로 분석되었다. 이러한 연구 결과를 바탕으로 범용적으로 적용하기 위하여 2차 전자 평형을 고려한 PbO 기반 방사선 검출기의 적절한 두께는 $300{\mu}m$로 평가되었다. 이러한 결과는 차후 다양한 NDT 장비에 범용적으로 적용하기 위한 방사선원 위치 모니터링 시스템을 개발 시 방사선 검출기에서 요구되는 적절한 두께를 결정하는데 있어 기초자료로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

PAUT-based defect detection method for submarine pressure hulls

  • A submarine has a pressure hull that can withstand high hydraulic pressure and therefore, requires the use of highly advanced shipbuilding technology. When producing a pressure hull, periodic inspection, repair, and maintenance are conducted to maintain its soundness. Of the maintenance methods, Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) is the most effective, because it does not damage the target but sustains its original form and function while inspecting internal and external defects. The NDT process to detect defects in the welded parts of the submarine is applied through Magnetic particle Testing (MT) to detect surface defects and Ultrasonic Testing (UT) and Radiography Testing (RT) to detect internal defects. In comparison with RT, UT encounters difficulties in distinguishing the types of defects, can yield different results depending on the skills of the inspector, and stores no inspection record. At the same time, the use of RT gives rise to issues related to worker safety due to radiation exposure. RT is also difficult to apply from the perspectives of the manufacturing of the submarine and economic feasibility. Therefore, in this study, the Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) method was applied to propose an inspection method that can address the above disadvantages by designing a probe to enhance the precision of detection of hull defects and the reliability of calculations of defect size.

웨이브렛 평면 AR 모델을 이용한 초음파 비파괴 검사의 스펙클 잡음 감소 및 결함 검출 (Speckle Noise Reduction and Flaw Detection of Ultrasonic Non-destructive Testing Based on Wavelet Domain AR Model)

  • In this paper, we deal with the speckle noise reduction and parameter estimation of ultrasonic NDT(non-destructive test) signals obtained during weld inspection of piping. The overall approach consists of three major steps, namely, speckle noise analysis, proposition of wavelet domain AR(autoregressive) model and flaw detection by proposed model parameter. The data are first processed whereby signals obtained using vertical and angle beam transducer. Correlation properties of speckle noise are then analyzed using multiresolution analysis in wavelet domain. The parameter estimation curve obtained using the proposed model is classified a flaw in weld region where is contaminated by severe speckle noise and also clear flaw signal is obtained through CA-CFAR threshold estimator that is a nonlinear post-processing method for removing the noise from reconstructed ultrasonic signal.

충격공진법과 초음파속도법을 통한 콘크리트 압축강도 예측의 신뢰성 평가 (Reliability Evaluation for Prediction of Concrete Compressive Strength through Impact Resonance Method and Ultra Pulse Velocity Method)

  • 콘크리트구조물의 진단에 사용되는 비파괴실험법들은 구조물에 손상을 입히지 않고 구조물의 결함이나 강도를 추정할 수 있다는 장점이 있지만 추정값에 대한 신뢰성이 떨어진다는 문제점이 있다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위해 2가지 배합으로 총 180개의 공시체를 제작하였고, P파와 S파에 의한 초음파속도 측정, 종진동과 변형진동에 의한 충격공진법 총 4가지의 비파괴실험을 실시하였다. 그리고 실제압축강도 측정을 통해 비파괴실험 결과값의 신뢰성을 비교 분석하였다. 각 비파괴실험법의 결과값에 대한 통계적 분석결과 변동계수값이 가장 낮은 실험법은 S파에 의한 초음파속도법으로 가장 안정적인 관측이 가능한 것으로 나타났다. 한편, 실제압축강도와의 관계를 통해 압축강도 4개의 압축강도 추정식을 제안하였으며 S파에 의한 초음파속도법의 결정계수값이 가장 높은 것으로 나타났다. 향후 다양한 배합조건에 따른 비파괴실험 신뢰성에 대한 보완 연구가 필요할 것으로 판단된다.

Assessment of London underground tube tunnels - investigation, monitoring and analysis

  • Tube Lines has carried out a "knowledge and investigation programme" on the deep tube tunnels comprising the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines, as required by the PPP contract with London Underground. Many of the tunnels have been in use for over 100 years, so this assessment was considered essential to the future safe functioning of the system. This programme has involved a number of generic investigations which guide the assessment methodology and the analysis of some 5,000 individual structures. A significant amount of investigation has been carried out, including ultrasonic thickness measurement, detection of brickwork laminations using radar, stress measurement using magnetic techniques, determination of soil parameters using CPT, pressuremeter and laboratory testing, installation of piezometers, material and tunnel segment testing, and trialling of remote photographic techniques for inspection of large tunnels and shafts. Vibrating wire, potentiometer, electro level, optical and fibre-optic monitoring has been used, and laser measurement and laser scanning has been employed to measure tunnel circularity. It is considered that there is scope for considerable improvements in non-destructive testing technology for structural assessment in particular, and some ideas are offered as a "wish-list". Assessment reports have now been produced for all assets forming Tube Lines' deep tube tunnel network. For assets which are non-compliant with London Underground standards, the risk to the operating railway has to be maintained as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP) using enhanced inspection and monitoring, or repair where required. Monitoring techniques have developed greatly during recent years and further advances will continue to support the economic whole life asset management of infrastructure networks.
