  • This study was carried out to prepare high porosity pulp for oil and air filter media from commercial grade NBKP with 6 - 20% NaOH treatment. The fiber width of NBKP remarkably decreased by NaOH pretreatment. The air permeability of the test sheet prepared from alkali-pretreated NBKP increased with increasing NaOH concentration up to 15%. The burst factor was greatly decreased by alkali pretreatment. By 15 - 20% NaOH pretreatment of NBKP, it could be possible to prepare a high porosity pulp. It seems that the high porosity of the pulp was due to a strong swelling and a great change of the cellulose crystalline lattice from cellulose I to cellulose II with NaOH treatment of NBKP. The study suggested that alkali- pretreated NBKP could be used for manufacturing oil and air filter media.

  • 10. Three major factors, freeness, filler and blend ratio that exercised considerable influence on physical properties of cigarette papers were chosen for the sake of their optimization at this experiment. An optimization of those above factors in paper manufacturing was investigated using response surface analysis. Optimum beating degree for Kenaf, Flax and NBKP showed around 72。SR, 68。SR and 85 SR, respectively, in considering of five quality index such as porosity, tensile strength, stretch, whiteness and opacity. The best blending ration of reciprocal pulps treated under optimum beating degree were diversified and combination scope of the bast fiber (Kenaf, Flax) to the NBKP was range from 30% to 65% in case of the Kenaf, from 25 to 40% in Flax at the same receipe. The optimum range of calcium carbonate content revealed 25%~30% in Kenaf mixed NBKP and 24%~31% in Flax mixed NBKP.

  • To investigate the effects of swelling treatment by ammonia on characteristics of carboxymethy1cellulose(CMC) and CMC solution, the domestic kraft pulp pretreated with 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% $NH_4OH$ solution, was carboxymethylated by the standard method, and then the CMC prepared was tested. The physical properties of CMC and CMC solution, such as degree of substitution, transparency. viscosity, weight increase and solubility, were measured, and the comparison with commercial domestic CMC used as a food additive was done. The results obtained were as follows; 1. In CMC manufactured by standard solvent method, hardwood bleached kraft pulp(LBKP) was more substituted than safwood bleached kraft pulp(NBKP), and viscosity of NBKP was higher than that of LBKP. 2. When ammonia swelling treatment was done, degree of substitution gradually decreased with increasing concentration of $NH_4OH$, and degree of substitution of LBKP decreased with a larger range than that of NBKP. 3. When ammonia swelling treatment was done. transparency of CMC solution from LBKP was hardly effected, but in case of NBKP gradually increased with increasing concentration of $NH_4OH$. 4. When ammonia swelling treatment was done, viscosity of CMC solution was higher than that of CMC solution without ammonia swelling treatment. Especially, CMC of high viscosity could be manufactured in 5%, 10% concentration levels of $NH_4OH$. 5. In CMC manufactured from domestic NBKP, CMC at the range of 0.40 to 0.50 in DS was dispersed easily and quickly dissolved, and CMC at more than 0.50 in DS was dispersed slowly in water solution. 6. In comparison with commercial domestic CMC used as a food additive, CMC manufactured from domestic NBKP was higher in DS, and was lower in viscosity and transparency.

  • Extensive studies have been made of the effects of freeness and the calcium carbonate on the physical properties of hand-sheets from commercial flax, kenaf and NBKP. As freeness increased, the hand-sheets from the pulps above showed higher retention rate of calcium carbonate, brightness, opacity and tensile strength but lower value of porosity. Among these, the retention rate(46%) showed the highest value In kenaf, the porosity(205 c.u.) in flax, and the opacity(67%) and the tensile strength(2.8kg) in NBKP respectively. Under the constant freeness, retention rate of calcium carbonate in hand-sheets increased until 1.4 times pulp weight was added in flax and kenaf but, in NBKP, decreased from the beginning of 0.8 times with the highest retention rate. Results above led to higher porosity, opacity, brightness but lowered tensile strength. Mixed pulp(Kenaf+ NBKP) showed higher retention rate than each pulp. Pictures of X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope demonstrated that both of domestic and foreign calcium carbonates were calcite of spindle form. The brightness of foreign calcium carbonate was higher by 295 than that of domestic one. The average particle size of calcium carbonate was 2.1 U m(domestic), 3.6 U m(foreign).

  • Mechanical properties of paper mulberry bast fiber handsheets were investigated to study the characteristics of bast fiber in terms of being suitable for modern paper making process. Tensile, tear and burst strength of handsheets made from bast fiber of paper mulberry were better than those of NBKP handsheets. Smoothness of bast fiber was higher but stiffness was lower than NBKP. Sizing performance of bast fiber were worse. 3D image analysis showed that handsheets of bast fiber had inferior formation and more pores comparing to NBKP.

  • This study was made to Investigate the effect of tensile strength(kg/cm$^{2}$), opacity(%), porosity(cc/min) of the paper manufacturing with the freeness properties of NBKP and the calcium carbonate having the different physical and chemical properties. As the results, the opacity and porosity of the freeness of, NBKP, obtained good strength properties from the freeness 65$^{\circ}$SR and the tensile strength from the freeness 85$^{\circ}$SR. The strength properties of paper manufacturing loaded with calcium carbonate appears to be related to the effect of the freeness, and it was obtained the good results at opacity 83.8% in the freeness 85$^{\circ}$SR, tensile strength 3.8kg/m$^{2}$ porosity 87cc/min in the freeness 65$^{\circ}$SR. Addition of 50%, 55%, 60% CaCO$_{3}$ was found to increase slightly the strength properties of paper.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the influence of paper stock type and heat treatment on sizing effect. Various types of pulps were used to make handsheets sized internally with AKD(alkyl ketene dimer) and externally with CMC(carboxyl methyl cellulose). Most of the handsheets were treated with heat by dry oven $(100^{\circ}C,\;30min)$ to evaluate the effect of heat treatment on sizing development. Internal sizing development of newsprint was very bad, but the effect of heat treatment was much higher than those of NBKP, BCTMP. In case of surface sizing, newsprint was more effective compared to the other pulps. Considering above mentioned results, it seems that internal sizing slows down water into paper by molecular diffusion much more than capillary penetration, but surface sizing slows down capillary penetration. With regard to density, a higher thickness sheets showed high heat treatment effect on sizing, therefore it assumed that heat treatment effect on sizing had very close relationship with sheet density.

  • Effect of fiber treatment with cellulase (Liftase A40), and with two refining methods (Valley beating and impact refining) on wood fiber and handsheet properties were investigated at three refining levels (300, 400, and 500ml) for two furnishes (NBKP and LBKP). Part of the treated furnishes were classified by 150 mesh screen into fine-free fiber, and fines. Fiber length analysis, WRV, zero-span strength, and other handsheet mechanical properties were compared. The study showed that Liftase A40 lowered the zero-span and the folding endurance of both furnishes (NBKP much more and LBKP much less). Pretreatment with Liftase A 40 followed by refining significantly lowered the fiber length and refining energy to reach to the target freeness. Impact refining, which is done by hitting the fibers vertically with rod at 20% solid content, kept the fiber length increased WRV, and improved handsheet mechanical properties much more than valley beating. Properties of fines from different sources were compared in detail in the study.
