Direction of arrival estimation of non-Gaussian signals for nested arrays: Applying fourth-order difference co-array and the successive method

  • Herein, we estimate the direction of arrival (DOA) of non-Gaussian signals for nested arrays (NAs) by implementing the fourth-order difference co-array (FODC) and successive methods. In particular, considering the property of the fourth-order cumulant (FOC), we first construct the FODC of the NA, which can obtain O(N4) virtual elements using N physical sensors, whereas conventional FOC methods can only obtain O(N2) virtual elements. In addition, the closed-form expression of FODC is presented to verify the enhanced degrees of freedom (DOFs). Subsequently, we exploit the vectorized FOC (VFOC) matrix to match the FODC of the NA. Notably, the VFOC matrix is a single snapshot vector, and the initial DOA estimates can be obtained via the discrete Fourier transform method under the underdetermined correlation matrix condition, which utilizes the complete DOFs of the FODC. Finally, fine estimates are obtained through the spatial smoothing-Capon method with partial spectrum searching. Numerical simulation verifies the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method.

  • Windbreak forests, which have a windproof effect against strong winds, are known to be effective in reducing the spread of odors and dust emitted from livestock farms. The effect of reducing the spread of odors and dust can be estimated through numerical models such as computational fluid dynamics, which require aerodynamic coefficients of the windbreaks for accurate prediction of their performance. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the aerodynamic coefficients, Co, C1, C2, and α, of two windbreaks, Thuja occidentalis and a mesh net, through wind tunnel experiments. The aerodynamic coefficients were derived by the relation between the incoming wind speed and the pressure loss due to the windbreaks which was measured by differential pressure sensors. In order to estimate the change in the aerodynamic coefficient concerning various leaf density, the experiments were conducted repeatedly by removing the leaves gradually in various stages. The results showed that the power law regression model more suitable for coefficient evaluation compared to the Darcy-Forchheimer model.

Raman spectroscopic analysis to detect olive oil mixtures in argan oil

  • Adulteration of argan oil with some other cheaper oils with similar chemical compositions has resulted in increasing demands for authenticity assurance and quality control. Fast and simple analytical techniques are thus needed for authenticity analysis of high-priced argan oil. Raman spectroscopy is a potent technique and has been extensively used for quality control and safety determination for food products In this study, Raman spectroscopy in combination with a net analyte signal (NAS)-based methodology, i.e., hybrid linear analysis method developed by Goicoechea and Olivieri in 1999 (HLA/GO), was used to predict the different concentrations of olive oil (0 - 20%) added to argan oil. Raman spectra of 90 samples were collected in a spectral range of $400-400cm^{-1}$, and calibration and validation sets were designed to evaluate the performance of the multivariate method. The results revealed a high coefficient of determination ($R^2$) value of 0.98 and a low root-mean-square error (RMSE) value of 0.41% for the calibration set, and an $R^2$ of 0.97 and RMSE of 0.36% for the validation set. Additionally, the figures of merit such as sensitivity, selectivity, limit of detection, and limit of quantification were used for further validation. The high $R^2$ and low RMSE values validate the detection ability and accuracy of the developed method and demonstrate its potential for quantitative determination of oil adulteration.

Neuraminidase Inhibitors from the Fruiting Body of Glaziella splendens

  • Neuraminidase (NA) cleaves the glycosidic bond linkages of sialic acids to release the mature virions from infected cells and has been an attractive therapeutic target for anti-influenza agents. In our ongoing investigation of NA inhibitors in mushroom extracts, we found that the extract the fruiting body of Glaziella splendens potently inhibited neuraminidase. The fruiting bodies of G. splendens were extracted and partitioned successively with hexane, ethyl acetate, and butanol. The ethyl acetate soluble-layer was subjected to silica gel and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatographies, and MPLC to obtain five compounds (1-5). Their structures were determined by spectroscopic methods. NA inhibitory activity of these compounds was evaluated using NAs from recombinant rvH1N1, H3N2, and H5N1 influenza A viruses. One compound (1) was elucidated as a new azaphilone derivative, and four compounds (2-5) were identified as entonaemin A, comazaphilone D, rubiginosin A, and entonaemin B, respectively. Compounds 3 and 4 showed considerable inhibitory activity against three types of neuraminidases with the $IC_{50}$ values of 30.9, 41.8, and $35.7{\mu}M$ for 3 and 46.5, 50.4, and $29.9{\mu}M$ for 4, respectively. This study reveals that the fruiting bodies of G. splendens possess azaphilone derivatives with the NA inhibitory activity. This is the first report on the isolation of neuraminidase inhibitors from the fruiting bodies of G. splendens.

APEX 모형을 이용한 밭작물(콩, 배추) 물발자국 영향 평가 (Assessment & Estimation of Water Footprint on Soybean and Chinese Cabbage by APEX Model)

  • BACKGROUND: The water footprint (WF) is an indicator of freshwater use that appears not only at direct water use of a consumer or producer, but also at the indirect water use. As an indicator of 'water use', the water footprint includes the green, blue, and grey WF, and differs from the classical measure of 'water withdrawal' because of green and grey WF. This study was conducted to assess and estimate the water footprint of the soybean and Chinese cabbage. METHODS AND RESULTS: APEX model with weather data, soil and water quality data from NAS (National Institute of Agricultural Sciences), and farming data from RDA (Rural Development Administration) was operated for analyzing the WF of the crops. As the result of comparing the yield estimated from APEX with the yield extracted from statistic data of each county, the coefficients of determination were 0.83 for soybean and 0.97 for Chinese cabbage and p-value was statistically significant. The WFs of the soybean and Chinese cabbage at production procedure were 1,985 L/Kg and 58 L/Kg, respectively. This difference may have originated from the cultivation duration. The WF ratios of soybean were 91.1% for green WF and 8.9% for grey WF, but the WF ratios of Chinese cabbage were 41.5% for green WF and 58.5% for grey WF. CONCLUSION: These results mean that the efficiency of water use for soybean is better than that for Chinese cabbage. The results could also be useful as an information to assess environmental impact of water use and agricultural farming on soybean and Chinese cabbage.

대용량 기후모델자료를 위한 통합관리시스템 구축 (Development of Climate & Environment Data System for Big Data from Climate Model Simulations)

  • In this paper, we introduce a novel Climate & Environment Database System (CEDS). The CEDS is developed by the National Institute of Meteorological Sciences (NIMS) to provide easy and efficient user interfaces and storage management of climate model data, so improves work efficiency. In uploading the data/files, the CEDS provides an option to automatically operate the international standard data conversion (CMORization) and the quality assurance (QA) processes for submission of CMIP6 variable data. This option increases the system performance, removes the user mistakes, and increases the level of reliability as it eliminates user operation for the CMORization and QA processes. The uploaded raw files are saved in a NAS storage and the Cassandra database stores the metadata that will be used for efficient data access and storage management. The Metadata is automatically generated when uploading a file, or by the user inputs. With the Metadata, the CEDS supports effective storage management by categorizing data/files. This effective storage management allows easy and fast data access with a higher level of data reliability when requesting with the simple search words by a novice. Moreover, the CEDS supports parallel and distributed computing for increasing overall system performance and balancing the load. This supports the high level of availability as multiple users can use it at the same time with fast system-response. Additionally, it deduplicates redundant data and reduces storage space.

Silence of LncRNA GAS5 Protects Cardiomyocytes H9c2 against Hypoxic Injury via Sponging miR-142-5p

  • The regulatory role of long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) growth arrest-specific transcript 5 (GAS5) in both cancerous and noncancerous cells have been widely reported. This study aimed to evaluate the role of lncRNA GAS5 in heart failure caused by myocardial infarction. We reported that silence of lncRNA GAS5 attenuated hypoxia-triggered cell death, as cell viability was increased and apoptosis rate was decreased. This phenomenon was coupled with the down-regulated expression of p53, Bax and cleaved caspase-3, as well as the up-regulated expression of CyclinD1, CDK4 and Bcl-2. At the meantime, the expression of four heart failure-related miR-NAs was altered when lncRNA GAS5 was silenced (miR-21 and miR-142-5p were up-regulated; miR-30b and miR-93 were down-regulated). RNA immunoprecipitation assay results showed that lncRNA GAS5 worked as a molecular sponge for miR-142-5p. More interestingly, the protective actions of lncRNA GAS5 silence on hypoxia-stimulated cells were attenuated by miR-142-5p suppression. Besides, TP53INP1 was a target gene for miR-142-5p. Silence of lncRNA GAS5 promoted the activation of PI3K/AKT and MEK/ERK signaling pathways in a miR-142-5p-dependent manner. Collectively, this study demonstrated that silence of lncRNA GAS5 protected H9c2 cells against hypoxia-induced injury possibly via sponging miR-142-5p, functionally releasing TP53INP1 mRNA transcripts that are normally targeted by miR-142-5p.

Electrocoagulation of Disperse Dyebath Wastewater: Optimization of Process Variables and Sludge Production

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of initial pH, current density, and electrolysis time on process performance in terms of decolorization and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal from disperse dyebath wastewater (DDW) by mono-polar parallel laboratory scale electrocoagulation (EC) process. COD reduction of 51.3% and decolorization of 92.8% were obtained with operating cost of 0.19 €/㎥ treated wastewater for Al-Al electrode pair, while 90.5% of decolorization and 49.2% of COD reduction were obtained with operating cost of 0.20 €/㎥ treated wastewater for an Fe-Fe electrode pair. The amount of sludge production were highly related to type of the electrode materials. At the optimum conditions, the amount of sludge produced were 0.18 kg/㎥ and 0.28 kg/㎥ for Al-Al and Fe-Fe electrode pairs, respectively. High decolorization can be explained by the hydrophobic nature of the disperse dye, while limited COD removal was observed due to the high dissolved organic matter of the DDW based on auxiliary chemicals. Energy, electrode, and chemical consumptions and sludge handling were considered as major cost items to find a cost-effective and sustainable solution for EC. The contribution of each cost items on operating cost were determined as 10.0%, 51.1%, 30.5% and 8.4% for Al-Al, and they were also determined as 9.0%, 38.0%, 40.5% and 12.5% for Fe-Fe, respectively. COD reduction and decolorization were fitted to first-order kinetic rule.

흰색과 갈색 팽이버섯(Flammulina velutipes)의 영양성분 및 용매별 추출물의 항산화 활성 (Nutritional Components and Antioxidant Activities of Solvent Extracts from White and Brown Flammulina velutipes)

  • This study was conducted to determine the proximate compositions, nutritional components, and antioxidant effects of white and brown enoki mushrooms (Flammulina velutipes). The crude protein and carbohydrate contents were higher in the brown than white mushrooms, whereas the moisture, crude ash, crude lipid, and dietary fiber levels were lower. The mineral contents of the white mushroom was higher than levels obtained in the brown mushroom for the detected components (Ca, Cu, K, Mn, Na, and P). The amount of vitamin B3 in the brown mushroom was 1.51 mg/100 g, which was 4.5 times higher than that in the white mushroom. The major fatty acids detected were palmitic acid, linoleic acid, and α-linolenic acid. The total polyphenol and flavonoid contents were highest in 70% ethanol extracts of the white and brown mushrooms, respectively. For the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, a 70% methanol extract of the white enoki mushrooms showed an activity of 76.4% (p<0.05). For the ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) activity, a 70% methanol extract of the brown enoki mushrooms showed the highest value. Further, the total flavonoid contents were significantly correlated with the DPPH and FRAP activities.

전기미각측정기를 이용한 재발성 아프타성 궤양 환자의 미각평가 (Evaluation of Taste in the Patients with Recurrent Aphthous Ulceration by Electrogustometer)

  • 1. 서론 : 미각 장애는 신체적, 정신적 건강의 유지에 매우 중요한 문제라 할 수 있으며 국소적 병소나 전신적 질환의 한 증상으로 나타나는 경우가 많기 때문에 질병의 진단에 좋은 참고 자료를 제공하기도 한다. 미각역치검사는 검사방법에 따라 화학용액법과 전기미각측정법으로 나눌 수 있는데 이중 전기미각측정법이 자주 사용된다. 전기미각측정법을 이용하여 전신적, 환경적 요인을 고려한 연구가 다양하게 진행되었으나 구강내 병소와 관련된 미각의 연구는 불충분 하였다. 이에 구강내 질환중 가장 자주 발생하는 RAU와 미각과의 상관관계를 알아보고자 한다. 2. 연구대상 및 방법 : 부산대학교병원 구강내과에 내원한 환자 중에 구강검사를 통해 재발성 구내궤양으로 진단된 환자 27명을 실험군으로 선택하고, 인천 소재 00치과의원에 내원한 치과환자 중에 미각에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 전신질환, 약물복용, 구강내 연조직 질환을 가지고 있지 않는 환자 70명을 대조군으로 선택하였다. 전기미각측정기(Electrogustometer, Model EG-2B, Nagashima Medical Instrument Co., Nagashima, Japan)를 사용하여 오른쪽 혀끝, 측방 중앙부위, 유곽유두 근처부위, 연구개 부위에서 미각역치 측정을 시행하였다. 연구대상자는 왼손에 전기 미각측정기의 부저를, 오른손에 음극을 잡도록 하였다. 검사자는 양전극을 피검자의 측정하고자 하는 부위에 위치시킨 후 전류강도를 낮은 수치에서부터 점점 증가시켰다. 각 부위에서 5분 간격으로 2회 측정한 다음, 평균치를 구하여 그 부위에 대한 전기미각역치로 정하였고, 측정단위는 dB로 하였다. 재발성 구내궤양 환자들은 진단이 되었을 때 미각역치를 측정하고, 1회 치료 후 한 번 더 측정하여 비교하였다. 34dB에서 느끼지 못하는 연구대상자들의 전기미각역치는 34dB로 기록하였고, 재발성 구내궤양 환자인 실험군에서는 구강증상의 변화를 Numerical Analougue Scale(NAS)로 평가하였다. 3. 결론 : 1. 재발성 구내궤양 환자군에서 대조군에 비해 전기미각역치는 매우 낮았다. 2. 여성에서는 재발성 구내궤양 환자군에서 전기미각역치가 매우 낮았으며, 남성에서는 연구개를 제외한 전 부위에서 낮았다. 3. 재발성 구내궤양 환자군의 구내병소가 단일병소일 경우보다 복수 병소일 경우에 미각역치가 더 높은 경향을 보였다. 4. 재발성 구내궤양 환자군의 만성도에 따른 비교에서는 만성환자군에서 혀끝, 유곽유두부위, 연구개 부위에서 높은 경향을 보였으며 급성환자군에서는 혀 측방중앙부위에서 높은 경향을 보였다. 5. 재발성 구내궤양 환자군의 치료에 따른 전기미각역치는 혀끝, 혀 측방중앙부위, 유곽유두부위에서 유의하게 상승하였고 연구개에서는 상승하는 경향을 보였으며 NAS는 감소하는 경향을 보였다.
