Absorption of CO2 Using Mixed Aqueous Solution of N-methyldiethanolamine with Piperazine for Pre-combustion CO2 Capture (연소전 이산화탄소 포집을 위한 N-methyldiethanolamine과 Piperazine 혼합 수용액의 이산화탄소 흡수)

  • In this study, the new solubility data at high pressure condition applicable to pre-combustion $CO_2$ capture system were found. Experiments were conducted within the temperature range of $40{\sim}80^{\circ}C$ while increasing the pressure from 0 to 50 bar. The effect of MDEA (N-methyldiethanolamine) concentration was studied by varying the concentration from 30 to 50 wt%. In order to improve the absorption rate of MDEA, piperazine was added in ranging of 5~10 wt% into the MDEA solution as a activator. From this experiment, the equilibrium partial pressure was increased with increasing MDEA concentration in absorbent and reaction temperature. Also absorption rate was increased with increasing the reaction temperature. It was noted that the mixture of piperazine and MDEA aqueous solution showed faster absorption rate by 2.5 times than only the MDEA aqueous solution with 40 wt% cencentration at initial reaction stage and also increased absorption capacity by 16%.

  • In this study, densities of water + N-Methyldiethanolamine (MDEA), Water + 2-Amino-2-Methyl-1-Propanol (AMP), MDEA + AMP binary systems and Water+MDEA+AMP ternary system were measured over the full range of composition at temperatures from 303.15 K to 333.15 K by using an Anton Paar digital vibrating tube densimeter (DMA4500). The experimental excess volumes have been obtained from the experimental density results and have been fitted using the Redlich-Kister-Muggianu expression. The parameters obtained from the binary excess volume data were used for the correlation of ternary system with one additional ternary parameter for each isotherm. All investigated binary and ternary systems are completely miscible, because the values of excess volume are negative under the examined conditions.

  • Cationic polycarbonate type polyurethane was prepared from the quaternization reaction of N-methyldiethanolamine(MDEA) in urethane backbone which was obtained from the reaction of polycarbonate polyol, MDI and MDEA(chain exetender). Tensile strength and modulus of the cationic urethane resins were increased sharply with increasing the ionic content in urethane backbone. But hydrolysis resistance was decreased with increasing ionic contents. The selectivity of the cationic polycabonate urethane membrane for water/ethanol separation by pervaporation was about 20. The carrier mediated transport mechanism was considered the most probable separation mechanism for these membranes.

  • For the removal of carbon dioxide from the chemical process, a chemical absorption method is typically used industrially. Development of new processes for the removal of carbon dioxide by the chemical absorption method has been developing new absorbents by using various absorbents. Thermodynamic data of the sorbent mixture in the new process design using hybrid absorbent is essential to reduce the equipment cost and operating costs of the process.   • Amine volatility occurring on the $CO_2$ capture process may result in significant economic losses and environmental impact. In this study, using an volatility measurement apparatus, we measured a amine volatility of various amines including MEA(Monoethanolamine), MDEA(N-Methyldiethanolamine), Pz(Piperazine), AMP(2-Amino-2-methyl-1-propanol), 2-MP(2-Methylpiperazine), DGA(Diglycolamine). For the quantitative analysis of volatility, we analyzed the effects of temperature and $CO_2$ loading using an gas chromatography analysis. The result shows that the amine volatility was increased by increasing Henry's constant(MDEA$-CH_3$)(for AMP).

  • To improve the dyeability of polyurethane (PU) resin, low molecular weight diols containing dye site in the molecular structure was added as a chain-extender. PU resin were synthesized with the variations in the chain extender, polyol type, and hard segment/soft segment (HS/SS) ratio. When HS/SS ratio is 1.4 and dimethylolpropionic acid(DMPA) or N-butyldiethanolamine (BDEA) was used as a chain extender, because of heterogeneity of reaction mechanical properties were diminished. But when N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) was used as a DCE, and HS/SS ratio lowed to 1.3, mechanical properties and dyeability improved. In particular, when linear type 1,4-BD was formulated with MDEA, hydrolysis resistance and mechanical properties of PTMG type PU was improved. And initial elasticity, tensile strength and elongation could be controlled by the variation of HS/SS ratio, DCE mixing ratio of 1,6-HD or NPG.

Analysis of the Heat of Absorption Based on the Chemical Structures of Carbon Dioxide Absorbents (이산화탄소 흡수제의 화학구조별 반응열량 특성 연구)

  • In this study, the heats of absorption of $CO_2$ with aqueous solutions of primary, secondary and tertiary amine aqueous solutions were measured in the commercial reaction calorimeter SIMULAR (HEL, UK). The heats of absorption of 30 wt% amine aqueous solutions of MEA (monoethanolamine, primary amine), EAE(2-(ethylamino)ethanol, secondary amine), and MDEA (methyldiethanolamine, tertiary amine) were measured as function of the $CO_2$ loading ratio at $40^{\circ}C$, in each case. In addition, the heats of absorption of sterically-hindered amine aqueous solutions of AMP(2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol, primary amine), DEA(diethanolamine, secondary amine) and TEA(triethanolamine, tertiary amine) were measured to observe the steric hindrance effect. The heat of absorption is high in the following order regardless of the steric hindrance: primary amine > secondary amine > tertiary amine. The heats of absorption of amines having sterically-hindered substituents surrounding nitrogen atoms are relatively low compare to that of sterically-free amines, although the difference is very small.

Absorption Characteristics of Carbon Dioxide in Aqueous AMP Solution Adding HMDA (HMDA 첨가에 따른 AMP 수용액의 이산화탄소 흡수특성)

  • In this study, the possible use of HMDA (Hexamethylenediamine) as additive to enhance reaction between $CO_{2}$ and AMP (2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol) which has higher absorption capacity than that of MEA (Monoethanolamine) was investigated. Also, the absorption capacity for $CO_{2}$ was compared with addition of HMDA, piperazine or MDEA (N-methyldiethanolamine) into $30\;wt\%$ AMP at $40^{circ}C$ and $CO_{2}$ partial pressure ranging from 0.5 to 120 kPa. Apparent rate constant ($K_{app}$) and absorption capacity with the addition of $5\∼20\;wt\%$ HMDA into AMP increased $214.2\∼276.3\%$ and $29.9\∼91.7\%$ than those of AMP alone. As a result, when $5\;wt\%$ HMDA added into AMP, the increasing rate of the absorption rate and the absorption capacity was found to be the highest. In addition, the absorption capacity increased $6.8\%,\;9.8\%,\;11.6\%$ with addition of MDEA, piperazine or HMDA respectively as compared to AMP alone at $CO_{2}$ partial pressure of 20 kPa. Consequently, HMDA as additive to improve absorption capacity of AMP was superior to other additives.

  • for the removal of carbon dioxide in flue gas, which is the main cause of the global warming, chemical absorption methods were widely used for years. Alkanolamines such as MEA, AMP, MDEA are mainly used as an absorbent. In this study, cyclic amines - Piperazine, Piperidine and Cyclohelylamine are investigated to compare the chemical solubilities, absorption capacities and rate ot reaction. In conclusion, Piperazine is the most effective absorbent of $CO_2$ and ran be the excellent alternative to the former absorbents. Experiments were performed at 5, 10, 15 weight percent, 30, 40, $50^{\circ}C$, and the gas solubilities are determined by back-titration method, and using Gas Chromatography the absorption rate was compared.

Pervaporation Separation of Ethanol Aqueous Solution through Carbonate-type Polyurethane Membrane III. The Effect of Zwitterionic Group (카보네이트형 폴리우레탄막을 이용한 에탄올 수용액의 투과증발분리 III. 양쪽이온성기에 의한 영향)

  • NCO-terminated prepolymers were synthesized by reacting carbonate-type polyol(PTMCG)($M_w=1,000$ and 2,000) with MDI and N-methyldiethanolamine, as a chain extender. Carbonate-type polyurethane containg zwitterionic group was prepared by reacting the prepolymer with 1,3-propane sultone. From the IR and NMR spectra of model reactions, it was known that the ionization occurred under the same condition. The structure of zwitterionic carbonate-type polyurethane(ZPU) therefore could be confirmed from the model reactions. Glass transition temperature(Tg) ranged between $-15{\sim}-30^{\circ}C$ from the thermal data. Tg was between $-15{\sim}-18^{\circ}C$ for a series of ZPU10 samples and between $-25{\sim}-26^{\circ}C$ for a series of ZPU20 polymers. Tensile strength increased with mole ratio of ionic content. On the contrary, elongation was rather dropped with mole ratio of ionic content. ZPU10-30 having better tensile strength and less elongation was selected as a membrane for the concentration of ethanol aqueous solution through pervaporation. To obtain the better selectivity, it was crosslinked with HMDI. In the swelling test, it showed the higher swelling degree at around 50wt% ethanol concentration due to the plastization effect of ethanol. To optimize the separation capacity, two operating factors-feed concentration and temperature-were considered. The overall separation capacity was as follows : separation factor, 2~83.2 ; the flux, $25.4{\sim}58.8g/m^2hr$.
