  • Small amounts of iodine compound in mineral oils are usually effective in reducing friction of metallic surfaces. Such improvement in frictional behaviour of wear characteristics was explained by the formation of a diiodide layer lattice structure at the metallic contact surfaces. The lubrication mechanism, however, by which organoiodine compounds functions is not based on the formation of such lattice structure iodide. It was tested and shown, by a static surface chemical reactivity test, wear and EP tests, and a hot wire method, that compound such as N-iodopyridinium dichlorodate, a double charge transfer complex, reacted with metals as an interhalogen compound and that the resultant thin film product reduced appreciable the friction of metallic surfaces, more than compounds such as methyl iodide, diiodomethane, and iodoform. These results suggest that the action of iodine, included in organoiodine compounds, is not that of a classical layer structure iodide, and an entirely new mechanism may be derived from a further studies on charge transfer complex compounds of organoiodine compounds.

  • Phenolic compounds in safflower seeds were recently found to stimulate bone formation and increase plasma HDL cholesterol levels in estrogen deficient rats, and to inhibit melanin synthesis. Nine phenolic compounds: $N-feruloylserotonin-5-O-{\beta}-D-glucoside,\;8'-hydroxyarctigenin-4'-O-{\beta}-D-glucoside,\;luteolin-7-O-{\beta}-D-glucoside$, N-(p-coumaroyl)serotonin, N-feruloylserotonin, 8'-hydroxy arctigenin (HAG), luteolin (LT), $acacetin-7-O-{\beta}-D-glucuronide$ (ATG) and acacetin (AT), were quantified by HPLC in safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) seeds during growth and processing. During growth, levels of the nine phenolic compounds in the seeds increased progressively with increasing growth stages, reached a maximum on July 30 (42nd day after flowering), and then remained relatively constant. During the roasting process, levels of phenolic compounds, except HAG, LT and AT, generally decreased with increased roasting temperature and time, whereas those of HAG, LT and AT increased progressively with increased roasting temperature and time. During the steaming process, levels of other phenolic compounds except HAG and AT generally tended to increase with increased steaming time, whereas those of HAG and AT were scarcely changed. During the microwave treatment, quantitative changes of phenolic compounds were similar to the roasting process, although there were some differences in levels of phenolic compounds between two heat treatments. These results suggest that the steamed safflower seeds after harvesting on late July may be useful as potential dietary supplement source of phenolic compounds for prevention of several pathological disorders, such as atherosclerosis and osteoporosis and aging.

  • Direct irradiation of carbonyl compounds such as some aldehydes, ketones and anthraquinone in N,N-dimethylamiline(DMA), without using other solvents, gave $\beta$-hydroxyamines as the major products. Irradiation of anthrone and DMA in methanol afforded ${\gamma}$-hydroxyamine. The structure of the photoproduct was confirmed by treatment with an acid to give a bicyclic compound.

  • Antioxidative compounds contained in roasted safflower seeds were investigated. Six phenolic compounds, N-feruloylserotonin, N-(p-coumaroyl) serotonin, matairesinol, 8'-hydroxyarctigenin, acacetin 7-Ο-β-D-glucoside(tilianine) and acacetin were isolated and identified from the extract of seeds. The inhibitory effects of six phenolic compounds on 1,1-dipheny1-2-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) radical and lipid peroxidation induced by H₂O₂/FeSO₄in rat liver microsomes were determined. Two serotonins showed more potent DPPH radical scavenging activity, and a stronger inhibitory effect on the lipid peroxidation than that of α-tocopherol. In addition, acacetin and matairesinol also considerably inhibited lipid peroxidation, while 2-hydroxy-arctigenin and tilianine were inactive. These results suggest that phenolic compounds, including serotonins, lignans and flavonoids in the roasted safflower seeds can be used as potential dietary natural antioxidants.

  • Two new nickel vanadium borophosphate cluster compounds, $(NH_4)_{10}[Ni(H_2O)_5]_4[V_2P_2BO_{12}]_6{\cdot}nH_2O$ (1) and $(NH_4)_{3.5}(C_3H_{12}N_2)_{3.5}[Ni(H_2O)_6]_{1.25}{[Ni(H_2O)_5]_2[V_2P_2BO_{12}]_6{\cdot}nH_2O$ (2) have been synthesized and structurally characterized. Inter-diffusion methods were employed to prepare the compounds. The cluster anion $[(NH_4)\;{\supset}\;V_2P_2BO_{12}]_6$ is used as a building unit in the synthesis of new compounds containing $Ni(H_2O){^{2+}_5}$ in the presence of pyrazine and 1,3-diaminopropane. Compounds contain isolated cluster anions with general composition ${[Ni(H_2O)_5]_n[(NH_4)\;{\supset}\;V_2P_2BO_{12}]_6}^{-(17-2n)}$ (n = 2, 4). • The analysis of n-butylbenzene and 1,2-dibromo-3-chloropropane (DBCP) as volatile organic compounds in biota samples was performed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry-selected ion monitoring mode. The target compounds, n-butylbenzene and DBCP, in biota samples were extracted by headspace solid phase microextraction (SPME) with $100{\mu}m$ polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) fiber and purge & trap method. The extraction recoveries of these compounds obtained by SPME was 85.8% for n-butylbenzene and 92.4% for DBCP, respectively. Each value of method detection limit were $0.15{\mu}g/kg$ and $0.05{\mu}g/kg$, respectively. While in the case of purge & trap method, the extraction recovery was 115.2% for n-butylbenzene, 80.9% for DBCP and method detection limit were $0.04{\mu}g/kg$ and $0.70{\mu}g/kg$, respectively. The extraction yields and detection limits of these compounds obtained by purge & trap were equivalent to those by SPME.

  • The development of excellent high-energy materials has progressed in the direction of synthesizing compounds with high nitrogen content, ultimately oriented toward the form of polynitrogen. As cyclo-N5-, a type of polynitrogen, is synthesized as sodium pentazolate(NaN5) and the results of various metal and non-metal compounds have been studied, the usage of polynitrogen compounds is attracting attention. However, since the known synthesis and purification method of NaN5 are very extreme and complicated, it is essential to improve the process in order to increase the utility of the pentazolate compounds in the future. In this study, only a simple filtration method was applied to purify the NaN5, and based on this, two non-metal pentazolate salt compounds were successfully synthesized.
