The objective of the study was to evaluate the use of n-alkanes to estimate DM intake and digestibility by beef cattle. Six steers were blocked (3 blocks, 2 animals/block) according to the body weight (279${\pm}$19 kg) and randomly allotted within blocks to two diets (3 steers/diet). A second trial was conducted with the same animals (321${\pm}$18 kg) after 36 days (d), using a switch back design. The diets consisted of two types of chopped sun-cured hay, alfalfa (Medicago sativa L) hay, or fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb) and alfalfa mixture, which were fed in equal amounts to steers. Animals were dosed with $C_{32}$ and $C_{36}$ alkanes, employing an intra-ruminal controlled-release device at the beginning of each trial. Hay intake per animal was measured from d 6 to 12 and sub samples were taken for chemical analysis. Rectal samples of feces were taken from each animal once/daily from d 8 to 14, freeze dried, and ground prior to alkane analysis. Alkanes were extracted from ground hay and feces. Feed intake was calculated from the dose rate of $C_{32}$ alkane and, the herbage and fecal concentrations of adjacent odd ($C_{33}$ or $C_{31}$) and even ($C_{32}$) chain length alkanes. Crude Protein, NDF, ADF, ash concentrations and In vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) were 17.7, 42.2, 28.4, 7.9 and 71.7 for alfalfa, and 12.4, 56.5, 30.4, 6.9 and 69.1% for fescue/alfalfa mixture, respectively. For both diets, intake estimated from $C_{33}$:$C_{32}$ ratio was not different from the measured intake, but intake estimated from $C_{31}$:$C_{32}$ ratio was lower (p<0.05), than the measured intake for both diets. The average estimated forage intake from $C_{33}$:$C_{32}$ ratio was 4.86 and 0.69% below than the measured intake for alfalfa and, fescue/alfalfa mixed diets, respectively. The respective estimates with $C_{31}$:$C_{32}$ ratio were 9.59 and 11.33% below than the measured intake. According to these results, alkane $C_{33}$:$C_{32}$ ratio is better than alkane $C_{31}$:$C_{32}$ ratio for the estimation of intake by beef steers.
An experiment was conducted to study the effect of ionophore enriched cold processed mineral block supplemented with urea molasses on microbial growth and rumen fermentation. Twelve adult male crossbred cattle were divided into four groups on body weight basis. Animals were given wheat straw as a basal diet. The animals of group I and II were supplemented with concentrate mixture and animals of group III and IV were supplemented with cold processed urea molasses mineral block (UMMB). Thirty mg monensin/day/animal were supplemented to the animals of group II and 35 ppm monensin were incorporated in the UMMB supplemented to the animals of group IV. Dry matter (DM) intake did not differ significantly among groups. Mean rumen pH was higher in UMMB fed animals. Total volatile fatty acids (TVFA) concentration (mmole/L strained rumen liquor (SRL) in group III (113.19) was significantly (p<0.05) higher than those of group I (105.83) and II (108.74) but similar to group IV (109.34). TVFA production (mole/day) was similar in all the groups. The molar proportion of acetate was significantly (p<0.01) higher in the group I (59.56) than those of group II (51.73) and IV (55.91) but similar to group III (57.12). The molar proportion of propionate was significantly (p<0.01) higher in the monensin treated groups i.e. group II (38.38) and IV (36.26) than those of group I (27.78) and III (33.06). Butyrate molar percent was significantly (p<0.01) higher in group I (12.65) than those of group II (10.19), group III (9.83) and IV (7.84). The reduction of acetate and butyrate was due to UMMB and monensin resulted in lower A:P ratio. Average bacterial pool and bacterial production rate did not differ significantly among groups. Total N concentration (mg/100 ml SRL) was significantly (p<0.01) higher in the group I (55.30) and III (57.70) as compared to the group II (47.97) and IV (47.59). Ammonia-N concentration (mg/100 ml SRL) of group III (34.99) was significantly (p<0.01) higher than that of the group I (25.76) which was again significantly (p<0.01) higher than that of the group II (20.79) and IV (19.83) indicating slower release of ammonia due to monensin in diet. Total bacterial, cellulolytic, proteolytic bacterial and fungal count at 4 h post feeding did not differ significantly (p<0.05) among treatment groups. However, methanogenic bacterial count was significantly (p<0.01) higher in the group I (11.80) compared to the group II (8.43) which was significantly (p<0.01) higher than that of the group III (4.70) and IV (2.90). Average protozoal population was affected by both treatments. Thus feeding of UMMB and monensin in diet affected the rumen fermentation pattern towards propionate production, slower release of ammonia and reduction in methanogenic bacteria in the rumen.

The BOD removal efficiency according to HRT of the continuous inflow SBR process was decreased from 92.1 ~ 96.0% at HRT 9 ~ 15 h to 86.9 ~ 90.7% at HRT 6 h, but a stable removal efficiency was shown up to HRT 6 h. The T-N removal rate was decreased to 80.1 ~ 87.9% at HRT 12 ~ 15 h, to 71.9 ~ 87.0% at HRT 9 h, and to 60.1 ~ 65.7% at HRT 6 h. As a result of the test of removing organic matter and nitrogen, the optimum HRT of the continuous inflow SBR reactor is determined as 9 h. The TCODcr removal efficiency was 88.4 ~ 96.0% and the TBOD removal efficiency was 92.1 ~ 98.1% as a result of examination of organic matter removal efficiency according to a change in the recycling rate (1 ~ 5Q) at HRT 9 h, suggesting that the a change in the recycling rate has a minimal effect on the removal of organic matter. The T-N removal efficiency was 70.3 ~ 80.4% at 1 ~ 2Q, 77.2 ~ 85.6% at 3Q and 61.5 ~ 80.8% at 4 ~ 5Q according to a change in the recycling rate. The TP removal efficiency was reduced to 75.0 ~ 84.6% at 1 ~ 4Q and to 63.3 ~ 72.4% at 5Q. This is presumably because the release and ingestion of phosphorus (P) by microorganisms is not performed smoothly at 5Q or more. Therefore, the optimum recycling rate for removing organic matter and nutrients was found to be 3Q.

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of die temperature and dimension on extraction pattern, extract yield, and crude saponin content of extruded white ginseng. The extrusion variables were die temperature $(110\;and\;120^{\circ}C)$ and die dimension (3 holes with 1.0 mm, 2 holes with 2.0 mm, and 1 hole with 3.0 mm diameter). The browness and redness were indicator of active components in ginseng extract. Both were used to evaluate the effect of die temperature and die dimension on release pattern and release rate constant. Browness and redness of extract achieved its lowest value at die temperature $110^{\circ}C$ and 2 holes with 2.0 mm diameter, indicating the lowest extraction rate constant. Extract yield highly increased by extrusion treatment. Extract yield and crude saponin content were the highest at die temperature $120^{\circ}C$ and 1 hole with 3.0 mm diameter. In conclusion, extrusion process has contributed significantly in improvement of release rate of its active components.
Recently, it has been suggested that the endogenous adenosine may be the mediator for the intercellular communication in the regulation of tubuloglomerular feedback control and renin release. Even though two subclasses of adenosine receptors, A1 and A2, have been described, their functional roles are controversial. The present study was undertaken to clarify the role of adenosine receptors in hypertensive rabbit caused by clamping of renal artery. Experiments were done in two-kidney one clip Goldblatt hypertensive rabbits (2K1GHR) and sham-operated normotensive rabbits. Adenosine, N6-cyclohexyladenosine (CHA) and 5'-N-ethylcarboxamidoadenosine (NECA) were infused into a renal artery. The decreases in urine volume, renal blood flow, glomerular filtration rate and excreted amounts of electrolytes caused by adenosine and CHA were significantly attenuated in 2K1CHR. However, changes in renal function caused by A2 adenosine receptor agonist, NECA, tend to be accentuated in 2K1CHR. These results suggest that the attenuation of renal effect caused by adenosine and A1 adenosine receptor agonist may be due to the modification of adenosine receptor in the kidney in Goldblatt hypertensive rabbits.

The presence of predators (excluding starfishes) of disk abalone, Haliotis discus hannai was directly investigated by nine SCUBA divings during February-December 2014 at the coastal areas of Yangjeong, Jukjin and Bongpyeong, Uljin, Korea, where the young disk abalone seedlings were artificially released. The results revealed that a total of six individuals of Neptunea cumingii that were feeding on the young disk abalone were observed within the water depth 10m at the coastal area of Jukjin, of which bottom substrate consists of the relatively high composition rate of rocks (60.3%). Though N. cumingii is well known as a carnivorous predator of diverse marine invertebrates such as live mussels (Mytilus spp.) it is the first report that this predator also feeds on the disk abalones. Thus, our results strongly suggest that the future artificial release projects around Korean coasts necessitate extermination works of predators including newly observed N. cumingii in this study as well as previously known starfishes prior to the releases of young Pacific abalone seedlings.

Vertically well-aligned Ga-doped ZnO nanorods with different Ga contents were grown by thermal evaporation on a ZnO template. The Ga-doped ZnO nanorods synthesized with 50 wt % Ga with respect to the Zn content showed maximum compressive stress relative to the ZnO template, which led to a rapid growth rate along the c-axis due to the rapid release of stored strain energy. A further increase in the Ga content improved the conductivity of the nanorods due to the substitutional incorporation of Ga atoms in the Zn sites based on a decrease in lattice spacing. The p-n diode structure with Ga-doped ZnO nanorods, as a n-type, displayed a distinct white light luminescence from the side-view of the device, showing weak ultraviolet and various deep-level emissions.
The main objective of the present study is to investigate smoke propagation in railway tunnels with rescue stations. In particular, based on measurement of HRR (heat release rate) for pool fires formed at different locations, the influence of fire source location on smoke behavior is examined. The fuel is n-heptane and pool fires are generated with a square length 4cm. With the use of MVHS (Modified Volumetric Heat Source) model for fire source, extensive numerical simulations are performed by using the commercial code FLUENT (Ver.6.3) Predicted smoke temperatures and smoke propagation are discussed. From numerical predictions, it is found that ventilation systems may be necessary in the railway tunnels because the smoke moves along the tunnel, and consequently it enters the non-accident tunnel. It is also confirmed that the cross-passage and fire protection wall systems contribute to control the smoke.
The role of moisture absorptive capacity of pre-silage material and its relationship with silage effluent in high moisture by-product feedstuffs (HMBF) is assessed. The term water retention capacity which is sometimes used in explaining the rate of effluent control in ensilage may be inadequate, since it accounts exclusively for the capacity of an absorbent incorporated into a pre-silage material prior to ensiling, without consideration to how much the pre-silage material can release. A new terminology, 'potential water retention capacity' (PWRC), which attempts to address this shortcoming, is proposed. Data were pooled from a series of experiments conducted separately over a period of five years using laboratory silos with four categories of agro by-products (n = 27) with differing moisture contents (highest 96.9%, lowest 78.1% in fresh matter, respectively), and their silages (n = 81). These were from a vegetable source (Daikon, Raphanus sativus), a root tuber source (potato pulp), a fruit source (apple pomace) and a cereal source (brewer's grain), respectively. The pre-silage materials were adjusted with dry in-silo absorbents consisting wheat straw, wheat or rice bran, beet pulp and bean stalks. The pooled mean for the moisture contents of all pre-silage materials was 78.3% (${\pm}10.3$). Silage effluent decreased (p<0.01), with increase in PWRC of pre-silage material. The theoretical moisture content and PWRC of pre-silage material necessary to stem effluent flow completely in HMBF silage was 69.1% and 82.9 g/100 g in fresh matter, respectively. The high correlation (r = 0.76) between PWRC of ensiled material and silage effluent indicated that the latter is an important factor in silage-effluent relationship.

The purpose of this study is to develop the efficient nutrient removal process and to verify operation and design parameters in domestic sewage. Endogenous nitrate respiration (ENR) was used for denitrification of nitrate in return sludge without additional organic carbon source. ENR reactor before the anaerobic tank enable to reduce nitrate below 3 mg/L and increase phosphate release at anaerobic reaction. Primary effluent during pilot scale plant were shown as TCOD/TP ratio of 40~60 and TCOD/TKN ratio of 5~7. Effluent concentrations were 10 to 12mg/L as TN and 1mg/L as TP respectively. In lab scale experiments endogenous denitrification rate of ENR reactor ranges from 0.042 to $0.057gNO_3-N/gMv.d.$$SP_{rel}/SCOD_{rm}$ was shown as from 0.13 to 0.17 in anaerobic reaction. These kinetic parameters are expected to be available for BNR(Biological Nutrient Removal) plant design and ENR reaction is available for nutrient removal in low strength wastewater.
