  • The Coverage dependent attachment of multifunctional groups included in threonine molecules adsorbed to Ge (100)$-2{\times}1$ surface was investigated using core-level photoemission spectroscopy (CLPES) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The core-level spectra at a low coverage indicated that the both carboxyl and amine groups participated in the bonding with the Ge (100) surface by "O-H dissociated and N-dative bonded structure". However, at high coverage level, additional adsorption geometry of "O-H dissociation bonded structure" appeared possibly to minimize the steric hindrance between adsorbed molecules. Moreover, the C 1s, N 1s, and O 1s core level spectra confirmed that the carboxyl oxygen is more competitive against the hydroxymethyl oxygen in the adsorption reaction. The adsorption energies calculated using DFT methods suggested that four of six adsorption structures were plausible. These structures were the "O-H dissociated-N dative bonded structure", the "O-H dissociation bonded structure", the "Om-H dissociated-N dative bonded structure", and the "Om-H dissociation bonded structure" (where Om indicates the hydroxymethyl oxygen). These structures are equally likely, according to the adsorption energies alone. Conclusively, we investigate in threonine on Ge (100) surface system that the "O-H dissociated-N dative bonded structure" and the "O-H dissociation bonded structure" are preferred at low coverage and high coverage.

  • Resins were synthesized by mixing N-phenylaza-15-crown-5 macrocyclic ligand attached to styrene (2th petroleum in 4th class hazardous materials) divinylbenzene (DVB) copolymer with crosslink of 1%, 2%, 6%, and 12% by substitution reaction. The synthesis of these resins was confirmed by content of chlorine, element analysis, thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA), surface area, and IR-spectroscopy. The effects of pH, equilibrium arrival time, dielectric constant of solvent and crosslink on adsorption of metal ions by the synthetic resin adsorbent were investigated. The metal ions were showed fast adsorption on the resins above pH 4. The optimum equilibrium time for adsorption of metallic ions was about two hours. The adsorption selectivity determined in ethanol was in increasing order uranium (VI) > zinc (II) > europium (III) ions. The uranium ion adsorbed in the order of 1%, 2%, 6%, and 12% crosslink resin and adsorption of resin decreased in proportion to the order of dielectric constant of solvents.

  • Activated carbons were prepared from palm chars by steam activation. The effect of the activation temperature and time, steam concentration and flux on the n -butane adsorption properties were investigated on the basis of surface area, pore analysis and n-butane adsorption. The amount of n -butane adsorption increased with steam concentration and steam flux at higher activation temperature to the $900^{\circ}C$, however this tendancy on the activated carbons were not observed at the temperature above $900^{\circ}C$, It was shown that surface area was 978 $\textrm{m}^2$/g, average pore size was 9.3 $\AA$ and n-butane adsorption was 5.9 g /100ml in the activated carbons, prepared at $900^{\circ}C$, 185 minutes.

  • A $TiO_2$ films in dye-sensitized solar cells was fabricated using $TiO_2$ colloidal sol prepared from titanium iso-propoxide used as a starting material by applying the sol-gel method. It was characterized by particle size analyzer, XRD, FE-SEM, and BET analysis. The adsorption isotherms of dye molecule on $TiO_2$ films were obtained at three different temperatures (30, 45, $60^{\circ}C$) and at three different pH (3, 5, 7). The adsorption kinetics of dye molecule on $TiO_2$ films were obtained at three different temperatures (30, 45, $60^{\circ}C$. The adsorption experimental data were correlated with Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order model. Also the isosteric enthalpies of dye adsorption were calculated by the Clausius-Clapeyron equation. In addition, the adsorption energy distribution functions which describe heterogeneous characteristics of nanocrystalline $TiO_2$ film surface were calculated by using the generalized nonlinear regularization method. We found that efficient adsorption of N719 dye from aqueous solution onto $TiO_2$ films can be successfully achieved by dye adsorption conditions and morphology of $TiO_2$ films.

  • Cross linked chitosan beads showed high selective adsorption abilities in order of $Au^{3+}$ > $Hg^{2+}$ > $Cu^{2+}$ > $Cd^{2+}$ > $Pt^{4+}$ > ${UO_2}^{2+}$ ions in mixed solution of various metal ions at pH 4.5. N-methyltyiobenzylated chitosan beads(MTB-chitosan beads) were prepared treating with p-(methylthio) benzaldehyde after cross linking of chitosan beads to give them a high selectivity in adsorption of metal ions. The MTB-chitosan beads demonstrated their selectivity on precious metals among various metal ions distinctively. Particularly, the MTB-chitosan had a peculiar selective adsorption on $Pd^{2+}$, $Au^{2+}$, and $Hg^{2+}$ions whilst the cross linked chitosan beads showed its high adsorption on $Pd^{2+}$ at pH 1.1. On the other hand, the cross linked chitosan beads showed its superiority in selective adsorption on $Au^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, and $Hg^{2+}$ions to the MTB-chitosan at pH 4.5 of the test solution. Thus metal selectivities were given to chitosan beads through chemical modifications.

  • A series of samples were prepared by treating natural zeolite from Kampo area with HCl and NaOH. And, the adsorption characteristics of some liquid samples were investigated by the Diamond-Kinter method. The adsorption amount of all liquid investigated was more effective in acid treatment than in alkali treatment. In the case of n-, iso-C3H7OH, thed adsorption amount of n-form which has smaller molecular size was larger. Similar tenedncy was observed in n-, iso-C4H9OH, but the amount was lower than n-, iso-C3H7OH. In CHCl3 and CCl4, that of CHCl, which is smaller molecular size and has polarity, was far lager. From the view of the molecular size, adsorption amount of C6H5CH3 and p-C6H4(CH3)2 showed the characteristics of surface activity rather than chemical treatment.

  • In this research, soil analysis and adsorption were conducted, and compared with the water quality of bank filtration and river in terms of TS, TDS, SS, $NH_4$-N, $NO_3$-N, $NO_2$-N, Fe, Mn, BOD and $KMnO_4$ consumption for the development of bank filtration in Gimhae city. Analysis of soil showed high levels of Fe (470 mg/kg), Mn (80 mg/kg) and $NH_4$-N (15 mg/kg). Also, adsorption coefficient values (k and 1/n) were 0.00159 and 0.8714, respectively. This implies that the adsorption of the soil depends on organic matter. Water qualitiy of the river and the bank filtration revealed that the concentrations of TS and TDS almost didn't change but the concentration of SS decreased 84% through the bank filtration. $NH_4$-N in the bank filtration was detected more than 1 mg/L which might be due to agricultural activities in the research area. $NO_3$-N was close to the detection limit owing to the removal by the adsorption. $KMnO_4$ consumption and BOD of the river were decreased by the bank filtration 250% and 350%, respectively, while Fe and Mn were significantly increased by the bank filtration.

  • Chitin was isolated from crab shell. Chitosan, which was prepared by the deacetylation of chitin, was acylated to obtain N-acetyl(regenerated chitin), N-propionyl, N-butyryl, N-hexanoyl, N-decanoyl and N-maleated chitosans and their metal ion adsorption characteristics of N-acylchitosans were investigated. In order to enhance the adsorptivity, their porous beads were prepared and their adsorptivity with respect to the porosity and the adsorptivities for metal ions($Cu^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$, $CO^{2+}$, $Mn^{2+}$, $Ag^{+}$)were investigated. Their metal ion adsorptivities were remarkably imporved compared to those of chitin. As the larger acyl groups were introduced, adsorptivity increased, but that of N-decanoyl chitosan showed some decrease because of steric hindrance of the bulky N-decanoyl group. N-Maleated chitosan containing carboxyl group showed highly improved adsorptivity, and N-acylchitosans showed the good selective adsorption in the mixed metal ions($Cu^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$, $CO^{2+}$, $Mn^{2+}$ and $Ag^{+}$). They also showed excellent adsorption characteristics as chelating polymers.

  • Objectives: To develop domestic charcoal tubes with good adsorption capacity, breakthrough experiments were performed on four types of activated charcoal. Materials: The adsorption capacity and the adsorption rate were determined using a modified Wheeler equation after the breakthrough experiment. For four types of charcoal (J, K, S and SKC Inc. 226-01), 100 mg were used in the breakthrough experiment. The test was done on benzene, toluene, n-hexane, and acetone in a dynamic chamber. Results: K charcoal had the greatest surface area and the highest micropore volume. J charcoal had a similar surface area and micropore volume to SKC charcoal. S charcoal had the lowest surface area and micropore volume. J charcoal had the highest adsorption capacity at 101, 252 and 609 ppm of benzene. The gap in benzene adsorption capacity among the types of charcoal was the least at 609 ppm and the greatest at 101 ppm. J charcoal showed the highest adsorption capacity at 54, 106, 228 and 508 ppm of toluene. J charcoal and SKC charcoal had a similar adsorption capacity for acetone. J charcoal had the highest adsorption capacity for n-hexane. In the experiment featuring 10% breakthrough volume, 10% breakthrough occurred at 18 liters at $2065.9mg/m^3$ for J charcoal and at 20 liters at $1771.2mg/m^3$ for K charcoal. It was difficult to judge adsorption capacity by surface area and micropore volume of charcoal. J charcoal, which was similar to SKC charcoal in surface area and micropore volume, showed good adsorption capacity at common workplace concentrations. Conclusions: The adsorption capacity of J and K charcoal was superior compared with SKC charcoal. J and K charcoal can be considered appropriate for use as sampling media based on this result.

  • Carbon aerogel is a porous carbon material possessing high porosity and high specific surface area. Nitrogen doping reduced the specific surface area and micropores, but it furnished basic sites to improve the $CO_2$ selectivity. In this work, N-doped carbon aerogels were prepared with different ratios of resorcinol/melamine by using the sol-gel method. The morphological properties were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Nitrogen content was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and the specific surface area and micropore volume were analyzed by $N_2$ adsorption-desorption isotherms at 77 K. The $CO_2$ adsorption capacity was investigated by $CO_2$ adsorption-desorption isotherms at 298 K and 1 bar. Melamine containing N-doped CAs showed a high nitrogen content (5.54 wt.%). The prepared N-doped CAs exhibited a high $CO_2$ capture capacity of 118.77 mg/g (at resorcinol/melamine = 1:0.3). Therefore, we confirmed that the $CO_2$ adsorption capacity was strongly affected by the nitrogen moieties.
