  • Many foundation jobs have been designed and constructed in Korea with the sole information obtained from the SPT. The use of the CPT to estimate equivalent SPT values is becoming a common application for foundation design. The relationship between the CPT and the SPT has been determined in a number of studies over the past three decades. However a few papers have been published on the relationship between the CPT and the SPT in residual soil. Due to the large variation in published correlations between qt and N in residual soil, local correlations should be developed wherever possible. CPT tests have been carried out in the residual soil classified by SM in accordance with USCM and compared with SPT. Value of qt/N = 0.3 have been suggested for residual soil in Korea.

  • Top Base Foundation (TBF) is widely used for the increment of bearing capacity and restraining settlement of foundations when the bearing capacity of ground is not enough. The design of bearing capacity obtained from exiting Japanese standard underestimates considerably what is compared with the observation values from the field measurement. Therefore, intensive model tests and site observation programs are carried out to establish more reasonable prediction technique and understanding of TBF in soft ground. In this study, 1/5 scale model tests are performed in order to investigate the behavior of TBF with various shapes in a laboratory. Also, about 100 sites measurement data are evaluated to investigate the field behavior of TBF in various ground conditions. Based on the results of the model tests and field measurement data, it was possible to introduce more reasonable bearing capacity equations of TBF considering N-value of soils, the effect of underground water and failure mechanisms.

  • Dynamic soil resistances were simulated by modified Ramberg-Osgood model in order to predict penetration rate of sheet pile installed by vibratory pile driver. Various factors which characterize modified Ramberg-Osgood model were determined considering the shapes of dynamic soil resistance curves obtained from field test and standard penetration value (N value) was used as parameter that relates field test results to the suggested model. Penetration rates calculated by analytical model were smaller than those of field test and penetration times were vice versa. Therefore, predicted penetration rate and penetration time by analytical model are more conservative than those of filed test.

  • In the present paper, a numerical study was carried out to simulate ground expansion induced by an application of pulse discharge technology. Based on laboratory pulse discharge tests, the characteristics of shockwave were investigated, and then the laboratory tests were numerical1y simulated using underwater explosion model implemented in a coupled acoustic-structural finite element analysis. In addition, for clayey soils, the expansion of ground was also studied using soil properties obtained from empirical correlations with SPT N values. It was found that the calculation results well agreed with the field test results.

  • In this parer, an improved backoff algorithm is proposed by supplementing a multiple of persistence factor for IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN MAC. This algorithm is proposed to complement the shortcomings of the conventional BEB (Binary Exponential Backoff) algorithm which is used for retransmission to control a new contention window in DCF/EDCF MAC. In channel utilization, collision rate and Goodput viewpoint, we analysis the improved backoff algorithm and compared the result with that of the conventional algorithm In this result, we showed that the performance for PFA backoff algorithm is 10% higher than that for the conventional BEB algorithm when the number of station is 40.

  • This study analyzed the cases of cracks in piles due to the use of followers under construction conditions where water exists inside the piles, and confirmed whether the piles were cracked through a field test simulating the construction conditions in which water pressure inside the piles was generated by a hammer. According to the construction case, under the construction condition where the pile length is 20% to 30% shorter than the drilled length, about 80% cracks occur, so there is a high possibility of cracking due to water inside the pile. A field test was conducted to confirm the type of pile failure due to hammer under the construction condition in which water exists inside the pile. The pile head was not destroyed by the compressive load, and one or more longitudinal cracks occurred along the PC steel wire. The closed end pile generates water pressure by hammer. the follower and cushion(compression plywood) must be drilled at least 0.4D. It is expected that improved quality control will be possible as the water pressure inside the pile is reduced.

  • In this application study, field pilot tests were performed to evaluate the validity of a proposed formula between the exerted electrical energy and SPT N-value based on the result of the basic study. Measurement sensors and recording system were developed to obtain exerted motor current and drilling depth in a field. By using the correlation formula proposed in the basic study, the measured motor current and boring speed were applied to predict SPT N-value and the predicted N-values were compared to SPT N-value of site exploration. From the comparisons it is verified that the exerted electrical energy to bore ground might be used to predict SPT N-value and pile tip location.

  • This paper compares and analyzes and analyzes the transmission performance of the OpenCable system and the DBD-C system which are adopted as the digital CATV transmission standard in U.S.A. and Europe respectively through computer simulation under the same channel environment. We considered the channel environment including the random noise and the CTB (Composite Tripple Beats) noise as channel impairments in order to compare the two standard fairly. Additionally, we analyzed the transmission performance of the OpenCable system for the various interleaving depths. We implemented each transmission system by software, and we analyzed BER values with respect to the C/N in order to compare their transmission performance. As a result of the computer simulation, to get the BER of ${10}^{-6}$ the OpenCable system requires 1.2 dB kiwer C/N than the DVB-C system in the 64-QAM mode, and the two system require similar C/N in the 256-QAM mode.

  • For achieving stability and economic construction at a retaining wall construction site, quantitative parameters of soil properties with excavation steps coincides with the actual field site. The main parameters of retaining wall design such as deformation modulus and modulus of horizontal subgrade reaction are common with N value of standard penetration test. Therefore, this study is compared and analyzed about the mutual relationship which is SPT, PBT and PMT for overcoming inconsistency of the existing retaining wall design generalized. In addition, modulus of horizontal subgrade reaction and reduction factor with excavation steps are proposed through back analysis of elasto-plasticity and finite element method with actual field monitoring data. Finally, it is purpose that parameter errors are reduced for applying effective retaining wall design at a construction small and medium-sized.

  • In this study, partial drilled shafts (Bottom Cast-in-place Concrete pile) were applied to the pilot test site to ensure the bearing capacity; we used the skin friction force in the IGM to analyze the feasibility of the application of IGM theory. The soil characteristics were analyzed in cohesive, non-smear, and smooth conditions for the application of the IGM theory via geotechnical investigation and measurement of the disturbance and surface roughness. Static load and load transfer tests were conducted to calculate the allowable bearing capacity and the skin friction force by depth. The skin friction force increased with increase in the depth and standard settlement, showing a very high correlation. In addition, because the unconfined strength ($q_u$), which is the most important parameter in the cohesive IGM, cannot be measured in a weathered granite area, the static load and load transfer test results and the N value were used to obtain $q_u$.
