  • The title one-dimensional hydrogen-bonded coordination compound $[Cu^{II}(C_{13}H_{17}N_3OBr)(C_8H_5O_4)]{\cdot}2H_2O.CH_3OH$ has been synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction study. The monomeric unit contains a square-planar $Cu^{II}$ centre. The four coordination sites are occupied by a tridentate anionic Schiff base ligand (4-bromo-2-[(2-piperazin-1-yl-ethylimino)-methyl]-phenol) which furnishes an $N_2O$-donor set, with the fourth position being occupied by the oxygen atom of an adjacent terephthalate unit. Two adjacent neutral molecules are linked through intermolecular N-H---O and O-H---N hydrogen bonds and generate a dimeric pair. Each dimeric pair is connected with each other via discrete water and methanol molecules by hydrogen bonding to form a one-dimensional supramolecular network.

  • New complex $[Mn(II)H_{1.5}L]_2[Mn(II)H_3L]_2(ClO_4)_5{\cdot}3H_2O$ (1), where $H_3L$ is tris {2-(4-imidazolyl)methyliminoethyl} amine (imtren), has been prepared by reacting manganese(II) perchlorate hexahydrate with the imtren ligand in methanol. X-ray crystallographic study revealed that the imtren ligand hexadentately binds to Mn(II) ion through the three Schiff-base imine N atoms and three imidazole N atoms with a distorted octahedral geometry, and the apical tertiary amine N atom of the ligand pseudo-coordinates to Mn(II), forming overall a pseudo-seven coordination environment. The hydrogen-bonds between imidazole and imidazolate of $[Mn(II)H_{1.5}L]^{0.5+}$ complex ions are extended to build a 2D puckered network with trigonal voids. $[Mn(II)H_3L]^{2+}$ complex ions constitutes another extended 2D puckered layer without hydrogen bonds. Two layers are wedged each other to constitute overall stack of the crystal. Peroxidase activity of complex 1 was examined by observing the oxidation of 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline)-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of complex 1. Generation of $ABTS^{+{\cdot}}$ was observed by UV-vis and EPR spectroscopies, indicating that the complex 1, a fully-coordinated mononuclear Mn(II) complex with nitrogen-only ligand, has a heme-independent peroxidase activity.

  • A new tetranuclear Mn(III) complex $[Mn^{III}{_4}(sae)_4({\mu}_3-O)({\mu}_{1,1}-N_3)(OH)(H_2O)_2]{\cdot}H_2O$ (1) ($H_2sae$ = 2-salicylideneamino-1-ethanol) has been synthesized by the reaction of $MnCl_2{\cdot}4H_2O$, $H_2sae$ and sodium azide in the mixed solvent of methanol, acetonitrile and water. The X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the four Mn(III) ions in complex 1 have a unique adamantine arrangement, whereas the coordination environment of each Mn(III) ions is different. Magnetic studies indicate that complex 1 manifests antiferromagnetic behaviors. The magnetic susceptibilities of complex 1 have been fitted by two magnetic models based on the suitable analysis of its magnetic structural topology.

  • N-methyl, N-butyl and N,N-dibutyl chitosan derivatives were prepared by Schiff's base formation and hydrogenation in aqueous media. Furthermore quaternization of the chitosan derivatives was performed in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone using methyl iodide to obtain water soluble cationic polyelectrolytes. It was confirmed that O-alkylation was occured as well as selective N-alkylation in these reactions. Chitosan and chitosan derivatives with quaternary ammonium iodide showed high flocculation power as the cationic flocculant. When tested on paper mill waste water, they showed high flocculation power, independing of pH range. The flocculation power was increased as the N-alkyl chain length was increased. Among them, N-butyl dimethyl chitosan ammonium iodide showed better flocculation power than chitosan. But, N,N-dibutyl-N-methyl chitosan ammonium iodide showed less flocculation powre than chitosan itself.

  • Complexes of Sn(II) with L1 = acac-o-phdnH2 [N,N'-o-phenylene bis(acetylacetoneimine)], L2 = acac-m-phdnH2 [N,N'-m-phenylene bis(acetylacetoneimine)] and L3 = acac-p-phdnH2 [N,N'-p-phenylene bis(acetylacetoneimine)] have been prepared and characterized by elemental analyses, vibrational, electronic spectra and thermal studies (TGA and DTA). Vibrational spectra indicated the coordination mode of imine and carbonyl oxygen for ligands giving (ONNO) that belong to C2V point group symmetry. The [Sn(L3)] complex has a maximum activation energy and [Sn(L2)] complex has a minimum activation energy.

  • Some vanadyl complexes were synthesized by treating a methanolic solution of the appropriate Schiff base ligand and one equivalent of $VO(SO_4)_2$ to yield [($VOL_2^{1-14}$)](L=Salicylaldehyde's derivatives, Schemes 1, 2). These oxovanadium (IV) complexes were characterized based on their FT-IR, UV-Vis spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The IR spectra suggest that coordination takes place through azomethine nitrogen and phenolate oxygen. In addition, the formation constants of the oxovanadium (IV) binary complexes were determined in methanolic medium. The ab initio calculations were also carried out to determine the structural and the geometrical properties of one of the complexes and its calculated vibrational frequencies were investigated.

  • A novel Schiff base ligand (N, O system) 5-methoxy-2-phenyliminomethylphenol ($5-CH_3O-PMP$) was synthesized. Using the synthesized ligand as a fluorescent reagent, a fluorometric method was developed for the quantitative analysis of Al(III) ion. The quantitative analysis of Al(III) ion was performed by making the complex compound between Al(III) ion and $5-CH_3O-PMP$ in ethanol-water solution (85/15, v/v, pH 6.2). The excitation wavelength (${\lambda}em$) of the complex compound was 397 nm while the emmision wavelength (${\lambda}em$) was 498 nm. The quantitative analysis of Al(III) ion was carried out by estimating the fluorescence intensity. The various calibration curves were used for the quantitative analysis in the range of 0.27$\sim$27 ng/mL Al(III) ion concentrations. The detection limit was 0.027 ng/mL. Using the fluorometric method developed in this study, satisfying results were obtained from various samples such as tap water, hot spring water, river water, sea water and waste water, which contained considerable amounts of interfering ions.

  • Dioxobis(3-methoxysalicyaldehydato)molybdeum(VI) complex has been synthesized by reactions of 3-methoxysalicylaldehyde and ammonium paramolybdate in methanol solution. With appropriate primary amine, the resulting complex gave schiff-base complexes, MoO$_2$(CH$_3$O-sal-N-R)$_2$ in which C=O oxide ligands had been replaced by nitrogen. The properties and possible molecular structure of these complexes were discussed by elemental analysis, spectroscopic studies and electric conductivities measurements. It was found that the Mo(VI) complexes contain a cis-MoO$_2$ group since their infrared spectra two Mo=O band at about 900cm$^{-1}$ and the combining ratios for MoO$_2$-ligand are 1 : 2. Also, electronic spectra of molybdenyl complexes assigned to ligand-to-metal charge transfer transition. All of these complexes are yellow or orange, depolar compound and slightly soluble in alcohol, dichloromethane, chloroform and N,N-dimethylformamide.

  • Two palladium(Ⅱ) complexes, N-(2-aminoethylisonitrosobenzoylacetone imino) chloropalladium(Ⅱ), PdCl(IBA)-en, and N-(3-aminopropylisonitrosobenzoylacetone imino) chloropalladium(Ⅱ), PdCl (IBA)-tn, have been prepared from the condensation of isonitrosobenzoylacetone (IBA) and diamine (ethylenediamine(en) or trimethylenediamine(tn)) in the presence of palladium(Ⅱ) ion. It is suggested that the Schiff base formed by condensation of an isonitrosobenzoylacetone and a diamine coordinates to the metal through three nitrogens of isonitroso (=N-O), C=N, and $NH_2$groups as a tridentate ligand. And also a chloride ion coordinates to the metal in addition to the Schiff base ligand to form a square-planar geometry.

  • The solid complexes of La(III), Ce(III), Pr(III), Nd(III), Sm(III) and Gd(III) with 4-hydroxy-3-(1-{2-(2,4-dihydroxy-benzylidene)-amino phenylimino}-ethyl)-6-methyl-pyran-2-one ($H_2$L) derived from o-phenylenediamine, 3-acetyl-6-methyl-(2H)pyran,2,4(3H)-dione (dehydroacetic acid or DHA) and 2, 4-dihydroxy benzaldehyde have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, conductometry, magnetic susceptibility, UV-visible, FT-IR, $^1H$-NMR, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis study, and screened for antimicrobial activity. The FT-IR spectral data suggest that the ligand behaves as a dibasic tetradentate ligand with ONNO donor atoms sequence towards central metal ion. From the microanalytical data, the stoichiometry of the complexes has been found to be 1:1 (metal: ligand). The physico-chemical data suggests distorted octahedral geometry for La(III), Ce(III), Pr(III), Nd(III), Sm(III) and Gd(III) complexes. The X-ray diffraction data suggests monoclinic crystal system for La(III) and Ce(III) and orthorombic crystal system for Pr(III) and Nd(III) complexes. Thermal behavior (TG/DTA) of the complexes was studied and kinetic parameters were determined by Horowitz-Metzger and Coats-Redfern methods. The ligand and its metal complexes were screened for antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Bacillus Sp. and fungicidal activity against Aspergillus Niger, Trichoderma and Fusarium oxysporum.
