서사와 신화론을 중심으로 한 스타크래프트 분석 (Analysis on Starcraft Focused: Narratives and Mythologies)

  • 컴퓨터게임에 대한 문화연구적인 접근을 도모하였다. 다양한 영역에 활용되고 있는 기호학이 역시 컴퓨터게임에도 유용할 것으로 판단되었으며, 이러한 기호학적 배경 하에서 프로프의 서사이론과 바르트의 신화론을 활용하여 스타크래프트를 분석하고자 하였다. 스타크래프트의 서사에서 몇 가지 단순하지만 내적 구조를 관철하고 있는 기능들을 찾을 수 있었는데, 그 기능의 논리는 자본주의의 논리를 모사한 것으로 판단되었다. 또한 대부분의 게임이 계열체적인 서사의 흐름을 갖는 반면에 스타크래프트는 그것의 네트워크 게임이라는 특성 때문에 통합체적인 흐름이 주요한 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 논의 속에서 훈육 통제의 일상화, 시 공간의 자원화, 대상의 몰가치화라는 신화들을 찾을 수 있었다.

Animal Symbolism of the Trademarks and Trade Characters - Cultural influences of the animal symbols

  • People have their own cultural backgrounds and experiences in terms of visual perceptional thinking so that they could misunderstand the cultural symbols, trademarks, Brand Identities, and trade characters, especially, animal trademarks. Sometimes Easterners and Westerners seem to not comprehend the different meanings of the cultural symbols. The signs of twelve Chinese zodiac animals are the typical symbol of the Asian mythology. What I wanted to focus on emphasizing the different views and perspective of an animal trademark is according to the Chinese Zodiac between Eastern and Western cultures. Generally, multiple symbolisms are difficult to comprehend, because they are created by individual ideas and incorporate several mythologies and histories. How do Westerners interpret the implied meaning of Eastern animals in general? How are they going to understand the Eastern animal logos or marks accurately? How can we solve the problem to make people understand their different meanings? There were some confusing pictorial images in the area of the design field when a designer creates an animal mark for globalization and localization. Creating of hybrid symbol is the best way to break the communication barriers with people all around the world.

디자인 씽킹의 신화성 - 롤랑바르트 기호의 신화론을 배경으로 (Mythologies of Design Thinking: Based on Roland Barthes's Mythologies)

  • 본 논문의 목적은 롤랑 바르트의 신화론을 통해서 디자인 씽킹(design thinking)의 담론을 해석해 보는 데 있다. 이를 위해 기호가 생성하는 함축의미를 구조적으로 해석한 바르트의 방법론적 틀을 활용해 디자인 씽킹이 신화화 되는 과정을 탐색한다. 디자인 씽킹은 본래 전문적인 디자인 결과물 도출을 목적으로 디자인의 아이디어 기획 과정에서 활용되는 일종의 방법론을 말한다. 하지만 최근 디자인 씽킹은 사회문제, 경영, 마케팅 전략 등 디자인 영역 바깥에 존재하는 다양한 문제를 창의적으로 해결하기 위한 도구로 알려지면서 대중적인 관심이 높아지고 있다. 바르트는 신화가 이데올로기를 전달하는 도구라고 했다. 또한 밖으로 드러나 보이는 명시의미보다 내재한 함축의미를 해석하는 '구조적 사고'의 중요성을 강조한다. 오늘날 사회가 가지는 가장 큰 이데올로기 중 하나는 창의성이다. 디자인 씽킹은 이러한 창의성의 발현을 하나의 도식화된 프로세스를 통해 실현하려고 한다. 이는 디자인 씽킹이라는 도상이 구체적으로 형상화되어 물체성을 구현하고 그 안에서 문제 해결의 담론과 사회적 코드가 만나 신화성을 형성하는 것으로 설명된다. 바르트가 말하는 신화는 근 현대 인간이 생산해낸 문화적 코드에 의한 신화적 가치를 말한다. 디자인 씽킹은 그 자체가 가지는 기표보다 함축의미인 상징적 가치가 커지게 되었다. 이는 신화적 속성을 가진 하나의 기호가 되었음을 의미한다. 다시 말해 디자인 씽킹을 통해 발현된 창의성이라는 이데올로기가 혁신이라는 문화적 코드를 생산해 내면서 신화적 지위를 얻게 된 것이다. 현상을 기호학적 관점으로 해석하는 과정은 대상에 대한 개념과 그것을 둘러싼 주변부의 모습을 보다 면밀히 관찰할 수 있는 중요한 도구다. 본 논문은 디자인 씽킹의 대중적 유행과 같이 일상의 이데올로기 안에서 지속적으로 드러나고 있는 기호를 활용해 사회현상에 대한 비평적 분석의 외연 확장을 시도해 보고자 했다.

'민족주의' 광고의 기호학적 분석 - 진 캐주얼브랜드 '잠뱅이'의 광고 연구 - (Semiotic Analysis of Jambangee's 'Nationalism'Advertisement)

  • Jambangee's advertisements in spring 1998 attracted public attention by the differentiating message of 'nationalism'. The purpose of this paper is to interpret Korean youth's culture of consumption, value, thought and culture expressed in these advertisements. The semiotic analytic method of F. Saussure and R. Barthe were used. Metaphor and metonymy as interpretive tools were used. Two levels of meaning, denotation and connotation were examined, and idelogies and mythologies were sought. Contrary to the most of jean advertisements which show youth, characteristic style, western life style and westernized beauty, refinement, materialism, and social differentiation, Jambangee's advertisement showed nationalism and patriotism. These advertisements criticized that preference of imported goods and ostentation of purchasing power brought crisis of economy and I.M.F. system. Jambangee's jeans symbolized as the meaning of nationalism and patriotism were suggested as a way to save our country. Jambangee's advertisements are meaningful. Because we had accepted western fashion passively so far, but for the first time Jambangee applied Korean design elements to jeans and gave new meanings to them through the 'nationalism'campaign.

  • The semiotics philosopher Roland Barthes declared 'the death of the author'. This means a sense of skepticism about author-centered writing in literature, and that readers and critics must also change their reading attitudes. In architecture, too, author-centered design appears. Architects sometimes try to express their will and concepts strongly through their work. However, this architecture is oriented toward identity, self-revealing, self-centered, and eventually without inspiration. On the other hand, the signifier does not result in a single meaning, and it is architecture as text that allows readers to enjoy the pleasure of deciphering. The purpose of this study is to investigate that unilateral by the will of the architect. Or whether there is a potential for non-intelligence and the possibility of generating meaning. In particular, we will analyze the works of Rem Koolhaas, SANAA and Sou Fujimoto to see if they are free from the will of the architect and can obtain the user's true freedom. As a result, we want to reveal the potential of various interpretations by users in contemporary architecture.

Examining Hegemony, Ideology, and Class in Mani Ratnam's Raavanan (2010)

  • Cultures often adopt the good versus evil dichotomy within their narratives of religious texts, aural anecdotes, and cultural mythologies. The Ramayana narrates a divine story that transcends time of the battle between the forces of good and evil, between Prince Rama and Ravana. Numerously adapted through time, the Ramayana is today told through moving visuals and has been adapted by Mani Ratnam through Raavanan (2010). Raavanan is adapted to the premise of hero versus villain using the good versus evil premise as Dev Prakash (Rama) searches to rescue his wife Raagini (Sita), who is abducted by Veeraiya (Ravana). The film, however, departs from the Ramayana as Raavanan is told through the perspective of Veeraiya. In the film, Veeraiya is portrayed as a flawed anti-hero who battles against injustice instead of being the antagonist. He seeks revenge for his sister and stands up against the oppression of his tribe. In this battle, he questions ideological understandings of justice and morality that have been conventionally interpellated within society. This paper discusses how Mani Ratnam, through the film Raavanan, contests hegemony, ideology, and class differences within modern cinema and society alongside the more significant question surrounding India's sociocultural conditions.

한국의 중남미 지역연구 네트워크와 중심성 및 무역과 경제에 대한 토픽 변동분석 (Network, Centrality, and Topic Analysis on Korea's Trade and Economy with Latin America and the Caribbean Area)

  • This study aims to analyze Latin America and the Caribbean papers published in Korea during the past 2000-2020 years. Through this study, it is possible to understand the main subject and direction of research in Korea's Latin America and the Caribbean area. As the research mythologies, this study uses the text mining and Social Network Analysis such as frequency analysis, several centrality analyses, and topic analysis. After analyzing the empirical results, there has been a tendency to change the key words and centrality coefficients between 2000-2010 and 2011-2020 years. During 2011-2020 years, the most frequent keywords were changed from Neoliberalism and culture to policy education, and economy related words. The degree and closeness centrality analyses appeared the higher frequency key words. However, the eigenvector centrality appeared very different from the order of frequency key words. The topic analysis shows that the culture, language, and Neoliberalism were the most important keywords during 2000-2010 years but economy, labor trade, industry, development became the most important keywords during 2011-2020 years in topics.

  • This study aims to analyze international trade papers published in Korea during the past 2002-2022 years. Through this study, it is possible to understand the main subject and direction of research in Korea's international trade field. As the research mythologies, this study uses the big data analysis such as the text mining and Social Network Analysis such as frequency analysis, several centrality analysis, and topic analysis. After analyzing the empirical results, the frequency of key word is very high in trade, export, tariff, market, industry, and the performance of firm. However, there has been a tendency to include logistics, e-business, value and chain, and innovation over the time. The degree and closeness centrality analyses also show that the higher frequency key words also have been higher in the degree and closeness centrality. In contrast, the order of eigenvector centrality seems to be different from those of the degree and closeness centrality. The ego network shows the density of business, sale, exchange, and integration appears to be high in order unlike the frequency analysis. The topic analysis shows that the export, trade, tariff, logstics, innovation, industry, value, and chain seem to have high the probabilities of included in several topics.

현대 헤어스타일에 나타난 키치미의 상징성 연구 (The Study of Kitsch Aesthetic Symbol Represented in Modern Hair Style)

  • Fashion, a means of communication, is the symbol conveying the social information and the individual identity. The opulence of material and the development of civilization make the sign of fashion variable and individual; especially, The importance of hair style among the today's sign of fashion, as a determinant element in judging each person's look is emphasized. Kitsch, based on the variety and the individuality is the manner of art in diverse hobbies. In addition, it enlarges the sphere of modern an, creates new open aesthetic world. Therefore, we need to understand the symbol of Kitsch aestetic represented in hair style, which is meaningful. The method of this study is quality analysis by means of semiology, aesthetics, Fashion artical, magazine, atc. To support this statement, we will study the form, a primary symbol, and the ideology, a secondly one in $\ulcorner$Mythologies$\lrcorner$ of Roland Bartes(1972). Then by means of the form and the ideology, we will try to recognize the myth, an essential symbol. The result of this study is following like these three points. First, the Kitsch patterns of representation in hair style use the accumulation by an excessive ornamentation; the inappropriateness by the lack of form, the disagreement, the unbalance, and the nonfunctional form; and finally, the amusement by the reconstruction, the exotic, and the satire. The above three is true to the Barthes's primary symbol-the form. Second, the anti-traditionality(including the lack of form, the disagreement, and the unbalance), the homesickness(including the reconstruction and the exotic), and the eclecticism(including the parody and the mixed imitation) are created as the ideology of the liberal artistic notion, different from the past outlooks on aesthetic. This is true to the Barthes's secondly symbol-the ideology. Third, the form and the ideology enable us to express our own thoughts and to recover the humanity, which is the primary purpose of Kitsch aesthetic. The Kitsch hair style, as we witness, does lead the varied and liberal aesthetic world, create its accessible value, and place the art of hair style in a higher status.

미국 극에 나타난 에이즈 정치학 (AIDS Politics in American Drama)

  • When AIDS evolved into a narrative, there were lots of mythologies on AIDS. Among them, the one that AIDS is a gay plague was accepted without any special rejection. Now AIDS is no longer a gay-related disease. At the beginning of the epidemic, however, AIDS was said to be a gay plague and gays were blamed for their life styles. Although AIDS was new, it had been in the mind of people. That is, the truths about AIDS were distorted and misunderstood. The social aspects of AIDS were based not on real scientific facts but on the prejudice and the practices which heterosexual society had invented for homosexuals. Here the AIDS crisis is said to be politicized. The socio-political responses to AIDS were effected by the dominance of Reaganism. So this paper investigates the effects of AIDS on the gay community and the reactions of the Reagan administration through analyzing ten American AIDS plays. Four issues are discussed to develop the paper's main idea: the meaning of AIDS, the past to be remembered, the new family system, and the indifference of President Reagan and the silence of media. AIDS means death; the relation between homosexuality and AIDS cannot be separated. Under these social circumstances AIDS becomes a symbol for moral corruption and the person with AIDS is thought to be punished. But a gay person can overcome the fear of death through regaining promiscuous sex and confirming his identity as a gay. Also to survive in the heterosexual society a gay has to make a new family system. Finally the indifference of the Reagan administration and the virtual silence of the media make the crisis more serious. In the conclusion homosexuals are compared to the Jewish people and the responsibility of gay community is also discussed. The important thing is that facing the AIDS crisis, the gay community has spiritually grown up.
