Moringa (Moringa oleifera), which is native to tropical and subtropical climates, now grows in Korea due to its warming climate. Since it is also imported and used for food and other products in various countries, it is necessary to analyze the properties of moringa being imported into Korea. In this study, the antioxidant activity and total phenol and flavonoid content were high in the leaves and twigs and showed a positive correlation. The mineral content was also high in the leaves and twigs, and potassium ions were the most abundant mineral. In addition, seven phenolic acids (caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, cinnamic acid, coumaric acid, ferulic acid, gallic acid, and syringic acid) and four flavonoids (kaempferol, myricetin, quercetin, and rutin) were detected in the leaves, twigs, and stems, and the ferulic acid and quercetin content was particularly high. The results of this study can be used as comparative data for domestic moringa growers in the future.

The purposes of this study were to determine phenolic compounds and to evaluate antioxidant activities of plums (Soldam, Oishiwase and Formosa). Soldam contains the highest amount of total phenolics among cultivars (Formosa: 4.0%, Oishiwase: 3.3%, Soldam: 6.4% for total phenolic) as well as the total flavonoids of which constituents were mainly myricetin and anthocyanidin. The antioxidant activities were measured by DPPH, ABTS radical scavenging, and SOD-like activities. The DPPH radical scavenging activity of Korean plum extracts (200 ${\mu}g/mL$) showed more than 43%, and the Soldam turned out to be the highest : ID50 value: 160-177 ${\mu}g/mL$ for Formosa and Oishiwase; 58-64 ${\mu}g/mL$ for Soldam. The ABTS radical scavenging activity of Korean plum extracts (200 ${\mu}g/mL$) was found to be more than 50%. The SOD-like activity of Korean plum extracts (200 ${\mu}g/mL$) showed more than 70%. Among three kinds of cultivars, Soldam had the highest antioxidant activity. The nitrite scavenging activity of Soldam was 61.5%, which is the highest, compared with that of the other cultivars, about 50%. From these results, Korean plums turned out to be phytochemical rich fruit as well as to show high antioxidant activities.

Background: Leonurine is a the aerial part of Leonurus japonicus Houttuyn, which has been used as a traditional medicines and is registered in the Korean Pharmacopoeia. Methods and Results: In the present study we performed a heavy metals and thin layer chromatography and measured loss on drying, as well as the contents of total ash, acid-insoluble ash, ethanol soluble compounds, and leonurine, using 15 domestically collected L. japonicus samples. The methods were performed according to the 'crude drugs test of the general test, processes and apparatus', published by MFDS, Korea (2014). The purity test (heavy metals) indicated that levels of Pb and Hg were 0.35 - 3.64, and 0.001 ppm, respectively, whereas the levels of As and Cd were undetectable, and stachydrine was identified by thin layer chromatography ($R_f$ : 0.15). We found that 5.93 - 10.62% (average: $8.58{\pm}1.8%$) of the sample mass was lost during drying, and the contents of total ash, acid-insoluble ash, ethanol soluble compounds, and leonurine were 7.87 - 10.84% (average: $9.62{\pm}0.82%$), 0.99 - 1.76% (average: $1.38{\pm}0.24%$), 16.70 - 23.11% (average: $19.49{\pm}2.14%$) and 0.04 - 0.17% (average: $0.11{\pm}0.04%$) respectively. In addition, HPLC profiling detected leonurine (5.94 min), rutin (16.43 min) and myricetin (26.78 min). Conclusions: We hope that this the rusult of the present study will contribute to the standardization and quality control of Korean herbal medicines.
Two new flavone glycosides, giraldiin A and B, together with three known compounds, annulatin, myricetin 3-O-$\alpha$- L-rhamnopyranoside and gallic acid, were isolated from the ethanol extract of the root of Pteroxygonum giraldii Damm. et Diels. The structures of giraldiin A and B are designated as 3'-($\alpha$-L-arabinopyranosyloxy)-4',5,5',7- tetrahydroxy-3-methoxyflavone and 4'-($\beta$-D-glucopyranosyloxy)-5,5',7-trihydroxy-2',3-dimethoxyflavone, respectively, on the basis of detailed spectroscopic analyses. The free radical scavenging activity of giraldiin A was evaluated by decolouring spectrophotometry of pentamethine cyanine dye (Cy5) with $Fe^{2+}-H_2O_2$ Fenton radical generating system. The results indicated the hydroxyl free radical scavenging activity of giraldiin A (E$D_{50}$ = 23.7 nmol/mL) is higher than that of some known antioxidants such as rutin, puerarin, daidzein and 2,6-di-tertbutyl-4-methylphenol.
This research was conducted in order to understand the hybridization between Quercus aliena Blume and Q. serrata Murray in Korea which show wide range of morphological variations within species and interspecific variations of diverse overlapping characteristics caused by hybridization. Morphological analysis (principal components analysis; PCA) of 116 individuals representing two species and their intermediates were performed. As a result, two species were clearly distinguished in terms of morphology, and intermediate morpho-types assumed to be hybrids between the two species were mostly located in the middle of each parent species in the plot of the principal components analysis. There was a clear distinction between two species in trichome distribution pattern which is an important diagnostic character in taxonomy of genus Quercus, whereas intermediate morpho-types showed intermediate state between two species' trichome distributions. Forty-two individuals representing two species and their intermediates were examined for leaf flavonoid constituents. Twenty-three flavonoid compounds were isolated and identified: They were glycosylated derivatives of flavonols, kaempferol, quercetin, isorhamnetin and myricetin. The flavonoid constituents of Q. aliena were five glycosylated derivatives: kaempferol 3-O-galactoside, kaempferol 3-O-glucoside, quercetin 3-O-galactoside, quercetin 3-O-glucoside, and Isorhamnetin 3-O-glucoside. The flavonoid constituents of Q. serrata had 20 diverse flavonol compounds including five flavonoid compounds found in Q. aliena. It was found that there is a clear difference in flavonoid constituents of Q. aliena and Q. serrata. Flavonoid chemistry is very useful in recognizing each species and putative hybrids. The flavonoid constituents of intermediates were a mixture of the two species' constituents and they generally showed similar characteristics to morpho-types. The hybrids between Q. aliena and Q. serrata showed morphologically and chemically diverse characteristics and it is assumed that there are frequent interspecific hybridization and introgression.

This study was conducted to find out the variation in agronomic trait and chemical composition in the collected Perilla frutescens from China and Japan. From the results of growth investigation, the maximum number if branches was 26.7ea in Japan 134 line, followed by 25 nodes number in China 119 line. Among the different lines investigated, maximum number of panicle number (108.8) were observed in China 114 line. 1000 seed weight was maximum (4.12 g) in China 118 line. Flowering time of different collected lines varied significantly with average value of 175.5 days and the average line required for maturation of seedlings was 205.1 days. Plant height was the highest (248.9 cm) in China 107 line. Highest number of total picking leaves was 965ea, and the average picked period was 54 days. The major phenol compounds contained in Perilla frutescens showed wide variation for Syringic acid, Benzoic acid, Naringin, o-Coumaric acid, Myricetin, Naringenin and Hesperetin. Japan 139 line showed the highest level of total phenol contents ($8254.0{\mu}g/g$, dry weight).
Metabolite profile is a powerful analytical technique to identify the functional characterization of plants. In this study, the phytochemicals and secondary metabolites of lentils (Lens culinaris) were analyzed to compare the anti-oxidative activities according to the different colors. The polar metabolites, fatty acids, carotenoids, flavonoids, anthocyanins, total phenolic acids, DPPH activity were analyzed. Three kind of lentils, French green whole lentil (FG), red whole lentil (LR), and green whole lentil (LG) (ASIA SEED Co., LTD), were used for this study. Fatty acids, phytochemicals, and antioxidative components from each lentil varieties were analyzed by official methods. The contents of lutein in carotenoids were 6-9 times higher than zeaxanthin in all lentils, but were not significantly different among three varieties. The content of carotenoids in FG was lower significantly than those in the LR and LG. Myricetin and luteolin were detected in the only FG. Kaempferol and delphinidin were significantly highest in the FG. Most of the phenolic acids except coumarate were higher in FG and LG than in LR. Also antioxidant effects ($EC_{50}$) were higher in FG and LG than in LR. The analyzed metabolites obtained from lentils showed distinct separation in the PCA results according to the varieties. Also, lentils showed different anti-oxidant profiles according to the colors. FG and LG showing higher contents of phytochemicals showed higher antioxidative activity than LG containing relative low contents of phytochemicals.
Objectives: The study's goal was to find out whether Chrysanthemum rubellum extract has anti-diabetic properties by concentrating on α-glucosidase and the PTP-1B signaling pathway. C. rubellum flowers were used for extraction using Methanol/water (80/20) as solvent. Methods: LC-MS techniques was used to check the presence of phytoconstituents present in C. rubellum extract. In vitro antidiabetic activity was evaluated using α-glucosidase inhibitory activity and PTP-1B signaling pathway. On Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced rats with diabetes, the in vivo antidiabetic efficacy was assessed using a test for oral glucose tolerance. Results: The phytoconstituents identified in the extract of C. rubellum were apigenin, diosmin, myricetin, luteolin, luteolin-7-glucoside, and Quercitrin as compound 1-6, respectively. Results showed that diosmin exhibited highest α-glucosidase inhibitory activity i.e. 90.39%. The protein level of PTP-1B was lowered and the insulin signalling activity was directly increased by compounds 1-6. The maximum blood glucose levels were seen in all groups' OGTT findings at 30 minutes following glucose delivery, followed by gradual drops. In comparison to the control group, the extract's glucose levels were 141 mg/dL at 30 minutes before falling to 104 mg/dL after 120 minutes. The current study has demonstrated, in summary, that extract with phytoconstituents reduce blood sugar levels in rats. Conclusion: This finding suggests that extract may reduce the chance of insulin resistance and shield against disorders like hyperglycemia.
Objectives: Candida albicans is an opportunistic pathogen that occurs as harmless commensals in the intestine, urogenital tract, and skin. It has been influenced by a variety of host conditions and has now evolved as a resistant strain. The aim of this study was thus detect the fluconazole resistant C. albicans from the root caries specimens and to computationally evaluate the interactions of an opaque-phase ABC transporter protein with the Psidium guajava bio-active compounds. Methods: 20 carious scrapings were collected from patients with root caries and processed for the isolation of C. albicans and was screened for fluconazole resistance. Genomic DNA was extracted and molecular characterization of Cdrp1 and Cdrp2 was done by PCR amplification. P. guajava methanolic extract was checked for the antifungal efficacy against the resistant strain of C. albicans. Further in-silico docking involves retrieval of ABC transporter protein and ligand optimization, molinspiration assessment on drug likeness, docking simulations and visualizations. Results: 65% of the samples showed the presence of C.albicans and 2 strains were fluconazole resistant. Crude methanolic extract of P. guajava was found to be promising against the fluconazole resistant strains of C. albicans. In-silico docking analysis showed that Myricetin was a promising candidate with a high docking score and other drug ligand interaction scores. Conclusion: The current study emphasizes that bioactive compounds from Psidium guajava to be a promising candidate for treating candidiasis in fluconazole resistant strains of C. albicans However, further in-vivo studies have to be implemented for the experimental validation of the same in improving the oral health and hygiene.

Chinese lobelia (Lobelia chinensis Lour.) is an important medicinal plant that is used in traditional Chinese, Korean, and Japanese medicine. The goal of the current study was to develop an in vitro propagation technique for Lobelia chinensis. We have examined the effects of different media compositions on the regeneration of shoots from nodal cultures of Lobelia chinensis, including Murashige and Skoog (MS), Gamborg (B5), Schenk and Hildebrandt (SH), Woody plant (WPM), Chu (N6), and Nitsch and Nitsch (NLN) media. Similar to this, shoot regeneration was examined using MS medium of double (2.0), full (1.0), half (0.5), and quarter (0.25) strengths. The regeneration of shoots was also examined with additions of 0, 1, 3, 5, and 7% (w/v) sucrose to MS media. For axillary shoot regeneration, full-strength MS medium supplemented with 3% (w/v) sucrose was shown to be the most effective of all the evaluated factors. On this medium, nodal explants optimally regenerated 4.5 shoots per explant and subsequently shoots involved in rooting on the same medium. The regenerated plants possessed abundant phenolics, flavonoids, and DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP antioxidant activities. High performance liquid chromatographic examination (HPLC) of the regenerated plants revealed an accumulation of myricetin and catechin in higher amounts.
