Effects of Music Therapy on Pain, Discomfort, and Depression for Patients with Leg Fractures

  • Purpose. To determine the effects of music therapy on pain, discomfort, and depression for patients with leg fractures. Methods. Data were collected from 40 patients admitted in an orthopedic surgery care unit. The subjects included 20 intervention group members and 20 control group members. Music therapy was offered to intervention group members once a day for 3 days for 30-60 minutes per day. Pain was measured with a numeric rating scale and by measuring vital signs. Discomfort and depression were measured with self-administered questionnaires. Results. Patients who received music therapy had a lower degree of pain than patients who did not receive music therapy as measured by the numeric pain score (p < 0.001), systolic blood pressure (p < 0.01), diastolic blood pressure (p < 0.001), pulse rate (p < 0.001) and respiration (p < 0.001). Patients who were provided with music therapy also had a lower degree of discomfort than patients who were not provided with this therapy (p < 0.01). These results demonstrate that music therapy is an effective method for decreasing pain and discomfort for patients with leg fractures.

The results of this study are summarized as followings ; First, the introduction of ancient score reads that musicians should have inherent character and right mind and harmonious sound exerts influence on human being. It emphasized that the proper expression of music is the stabilized mind and right idea. Second, the introduction of anthology lays stress on proper meaning, that is, lyrics that is not indecent nor loose. It asserted that right lyrics should not be pressing nor frivolous, but rather slow. Lastly, the introduction of both ancient score and anthology commonly present 'recovery of ancient music'. It was confirmed that the ultimate purpose of intellectuals and musicians in 19th century was to aim at slow, but harmonious and right music.

  • XML은 HTML의 단순성과 SGML의 복잡성을 동시에 극복하기 위한 노력으로 시작되어 HTML이나 SGML과는 다른 새로운 세계를 만들어 내고 있으며, 인터넷 문서 표현과 관련된 여러 분야에서 활발하게 연구되고 있다. 이 논문에서는 차세대 인터넷 문서 표현 언어로 주목받고 있는 XML을 이용하여 합창곡의 악보를 표현하는 기법을 제시한다. 이 논문에서는 합창곡 악보를 표현하기 위해 정의된 새로운 마크업 언어인 ScoreML(Score Markup Language)을 소개하고, ScoreML로 작성된 XML 문서를 웹에서 볼 수 있도록 ScoreML 브라우저의 설계 및 구현에 대해 기술한다. ScoreML을 사용하여 작성된 XML 문서는 악보 표현뿐만 아니라 음악 데이터의 저장과 검색에도 사용될 수 있다.

The Effects of Music Therapy on Cognitive Function and Depression in Demented Old Adults (음악요법이 치매노인의 인지기능과 우울에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to test the effects of music therapy on cognitive function and depression in demented old adults. This study was made with one -group in a pre- and post-test design. The subjects were seven demented old adults over, sixty-five years and with mild to moderate cognitive impairment, residing at a nursing home. Music therapy was given by one researcher and one research assistant for thirty to forty minutes twice a week for 4 months. Music therapy was conducted with the subjects both listening and singing with a cassette player and a double-handed drum. In order to evaluate the effects of music, we measured the level of cognitive function and depression at the beginning and at the end of the music therapy session by means of an MMSE- K developed by Kwon and Park and the Depression Inventory developed by Chon. The Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired t - test analysis using a SPSS PC package. The results are as follows: 1) The subjects of the music therapy showed improvement in cognitive function. The MMSE-K score was significantly increased after music therapy. Especially, memory recall was very significantly. 2) The subjects of the music therapy showed a slight decrease in depression. However, there was no significant difference in the degree of depression between mean scores measured before and after music therapy. The results suggest that music therapy is effective in improving and maintaining cognitive function in demented old adults. And we suggest that long-term music therapy will be required to improve depression in demented old adults. These findings are encouraging the idea that music therapy may improve cognitive impairment.

Development and Evaluation of a Hospice and Palliative Care Music Therapy Education Program

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to develop a hospice music therapist training program and to evaluate its effects. Methods: The educational program consisted of training on the theory of hospice and the theory and practice of hospice music therapy. The course lasted for 4 weeks, with 8 hours of training per week, and 33 music therapists completed the course. In order to assess the effectiveness of the course, participants' knowledge and confidence regarding hospice music therapy and readiness for hospice music therapy before and after education were measured. The statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 18.0 and the paired t-test was used to assess the effectiveness of the program. Results: The trainees showed significant improvements in knowledge (P<0.001) and confidence (P<0.001) in all areas of this course, as well as in readiness for hospice music therapy (P<0.001). Participants' satisfaction with the lectures was assessed using a 5-point Likert scale. The average score for all lecture areas exceeded 4 (yes), and the satisfaction level was mostly high. Students were most satisfied with the lectures on music therapy theory, followed in order by those on music therapy practice and hospice theory. Conclusion: This hospice music therapist training program is considered to be suitable because of its positive educational effects and the high satisfaction of participants with the lectures. In order to provide high-quality music therapy services to patients and their families, this training course should be regularly offered to cultivate competent music therapists, and the content of the education should be standardized and applied in various clinical settings.

The Effects of Music Therapy on Anxiety and Pain in Patients with Retrograde Ureteral Stenting under Local Anesthesia (음악요법이 국소마취 요관부목술 환자의 불안과 통증에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The present study was done to examine the effect of music therapy on anxiety and pain in patients for whom a ureteral stent was inserted under local anesthesia. Method: The participants in this study were 22 patients who received a ureteral stent at the Day Surgery Center of C University Hospital during the period from May to October in 2006. The patients were divided into a control group (n=11) and an experimental group (n=11). For the experimental group, music was played according to their musical preference using headphones. The music was provided from the point when the patient took the posture for the operation and was covered with a sterilized drape to the point when the cystoscope was removed after finishing the operation. The control group was only provided with ordinary nursing services. Results: The results show that the provision of music therapy to these patients is effective in reducing the patients' salivary cortisol and Vas-anxiety score and stabilizing their systolic blood pressure. Conclusion: We conclude that music therapy can be actively used as a nursing intervention for reducing anxiety in patients who receive operations under local anesthesia.

  • Music score recognition applications running on a smartphone, which is one of the necessities of modern people, have already been released on the market. These applications have the several limitations, especially the recognition rate of printed music scores is low so that many errors occur when the score is played. The major factor to decrease the recognition rate comes from poor tilt-correction of the captured staff-line. In this paper, we propose a efficient method that can automatically shoot the printed music score through preview analysis, which increases the recognition rate via tilt-correction.

  • In this study, we study the system to remotely transmit musical score based on Internet of Things(IoT). When musicians play music, they occasionally use the instrument and the musical score at the same time. At this time, the degree of immersion in music is reduced. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes automatic sheet page turning system based on Internet of Things(IoT). The system can be remotely adjusted using the foot without using the hand. The system consists of a Wireless Smart Button equipped with Bluetooth and an application capable of operating the Wireless Smart Button. The Wireless Smart Button used Arduino based open source. We designed an application(App) to utilize it and proposed an intuitive UI.

  • Generating chord score based on melody is essential for composition and arrangement, while it is picky for amateurs who do not have harmonics knowledges. To solve this problem, we developed automatic chord score generating program, ACGP. Based on genetic algorithm, it successfully reflects diverse hormonic factors and the mood of the music. User interface was also implemented so that anyone can use the program conveniently. Additional analysis was conducted to prove the utility of ACGP.

A study on improving the performance of the machine-learning based automatic music transcription model by utilizing pitch number information (음고 개수 정보 활용을 통한 기계학습 기반 자동악보전사 모델의 성능 개선 연구)

  • In this paper, we study how to improve the performance of a machine learning-based automatic music transcription model by adding musical information to the input data. Where, the added musical information is information on the number of pitches that occur in each time frame, and which is obtained by counting the number of notes activated in the answer sheet. The obtained information on the number of pitches was used by concatenating it to the log mel-spectrogram, which is the input of the existing model. In this study, we use the automatic music transcription model included the four types of block predicting four types of musical information, we demonstrate that a simple method of adding pitch number information corresponding to the music information to be predicted by each block to the existing input was helpful in training the model. In order to evaluate the performance improvement proceed with an experiment using MIDI Aligned Piano Sounds (MAPS) data, as a result, when using all pitch number information, performance improvement was confirmed by 9.7 % in frame-based F1 score and 21.8 % in note-based F1 score including offset.
