  • In allowing visitors to manipulate objects or models with their hands, science museums can become informal education institutions. However, little research has been conducted analyzing the specific interactions of visitors at museums and the effects that specific characteristics of interactive exhibit have on visitors. This research classified exhibits according to the three characteristics: the presentation of concepts, interaction with exhibits and concept levels. Further, relationships among engagement behaviors, visitors'attraction to exhibits, and the holding power of exhibits were analyzed. Using the three characteristics, 55 exhibits were classified into five styles. The results suggest that intriguing content and novel interfaces, maximizing information on science and technology, should be developed for the educational purpose of encouraging visitors to engage in active learning with interactive exhibits. The results of this study provide useful data that planners, designers, and instructors of science museums can use to maximize visitors' participatory learning and interactions.

  • As the cases of merging and cooperation of archives and libraries increase abroad, research and discussions about integration of complex information services among information centers, such as archives, libraries and museums started to emerge. In a similar vein, the need for integrated cultural information centers are suggested in Korea as the museums encounter the need for expansion of contents, and libraries try to diversify their functions, yet regional public archives has not been established. In this context, the concept of 'Larchiveum(libraries + archives + museums)' was proposed as an alternative that integrates and provides various information functions and resources, and research related to this started to emerge. At present, however, the Larchiveum has not been realized, the specific pathway to realize this kind of institution need to be discussed. This study analyzes the functional characteristics and elements of archives, libraries and museums, and based on these, the functional requirements of the larchiveum are drawn, and are reflected on the Larchiveum's functional planning for space planning in this study.

Therefore, it is necessary to review the concept and meaning of virtual museums and analyze the attributes of each exhibition type. This paper categorizes the exhibition types of virtual museums into four categories and analyzes the interaction methods of each exhibition type. The essential characteristics of interaction subjects affect all four types, but the method of virtual expression is distinguished, and the exhibition type that actively utilizes the virtuality of exhibition space and work expands the user's experience and communication. In this study, various forms and methods of construction of virtual museums can be explored by providing characteristics and considerations for each type of exhibition during the planning and construction of virtual museums.

Examining by Tokyo Imperial Museum, Government General Museum of Taiwan, Yi Wang Ga Museum, Government General Museum of Chosun, and NanTong Museum of late 19th and early 20th century, tried to find out similarities and differences. These museums are similar in that they adopt museums as modern system considering models of other countries(Europe or Japan) and exhibitions played important roles in gathering relics. Experts who leaded adoption of western civilization played an important role. These experts were conservatives who valued tradition and relics while they aimed for western civilization. It originated in the character of museum system. Historical Knowledge by museums was constituted with five combinations of conceptions which are nationality, locality, coloniality, and artistry. Every museum cannot help having modernity for museum itself is modern system. Modernity was symbolized by museum building of western style in Yi Wang Ga Museum, Government General Museum of Chosun. Tokyo Imperial Museum revealed nationality in that it tried building of imperial history which includes colonies. In early time, Tokyo Imperial Museum pursued modernity and artistry, however it concentrated on artistry than modernity later. We can find locality in that Tokyo Imperial Museum tried to find meaning about Japanese art by relating with natural characteristics. It is Taiwan Governor Museum that extremely expressed coloniality and artistry was not considered. Government General Museum of Chosun could not be exceptions of features of coloniality, but it need to recognize that artistry was focused all over the exhibitions. It was NanTong Museum that most directly expressed locality. Like these, Museums of East Asia established in around 1900 made different historical knowledge by varying weigh of five factors, nationality, locality, modernity, coloniality and artistry.

  • The purpose of this study is to classify the budget and settlement of global natural history museums into functional criteria, to compare and analyze the integrative research and general administrative functions of these museums, and to suggest the standard of budget compilation of the Korean National Museum of Natural History, which will be established in the near future. Annual reports, documents of budget request, financial statements and account books were collected from the following museums: SNMNH of The U.S.A, AMNH of the U.S.A, NHM of England, MNHN of France and NMNS of Japan. The integrative research and general administrative functions of the studied museums are reclassified into the criteria of budget and settlement data of the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. After arranging the details regarding budget and settlement of each museum, the international comparative analysis was investigated on the amounts of the integrative research and general administrative functions among the studied museums. The comparison and analysis show the ratio of integrative research function and general administrative function in budget expenditure standard at 6:4 in natural history museums of the U.S.A and England, of which the functions of research, education, exhibition and publication are considered to be the most activated in the world. This implies that museums should increase the budget for support of integrative research to allow them to maximize their functions.
