  • Limbs and supporting structures of an organism experience a full weight of its own when it lands from water, because neutral buoyancy in the aquatic habitat will be no longer available in the terrestrial world. Metamorphosis of anuran amphibians presents 8 good research model to examine how this transition from non-loading to weight-loading affects development of motor capacity at the time of their first emergence on land. Our video analysis of the transitional anurans, Rana catesbeiana, at Gosner stage 46 (the stage of complete transformation) demonstrated that the take-off speed increased 1.23-fold after the first six hours of weight-loading on the wet ground. It did not increase further during the following three days of loading, and was close to the level of mature frogs with different body mass. During development of larvae in deep water with no chance of landing through metamorphosis, both tension and power of a hindlimb anti-gravity muscle increased 5-fold between stages 37 and n. However, the muscle contractility increased more rapidly when the larvas could access the wet ground by their natural landing behavior after stages 41-42. Muscle power, one of major factors affecting locomotory speed, was 1.29-fold greater in the loaded than in the non-loaded larvae at the transitional stage. Thus, weight-loading had a potentially significant effect on the elevation of motor capacity, with a similar extent of increment in locomotory speed and muscle power during the last stages of metamorphosis. Such a motor adjustment of the froglets in a relatively short transitional period would be important for effective ecological interactions and survival in their inexperienced terrestrial life.

  • Purpose: The purposes of this study were to investigate the effectiveness of Pilates exercise on Fitness Factors related to motor performance including flexibility, agility, power, balance, and muscle endurance. Methods: Forty subjects were randomly allocated to one of two groups. The Pilates group did Pilates exercises 3 times a week for 8weeks, 60 minutes each time, and submitted to evaluation of protocols to assess sitting and reaching tests, a standing broad jump test, a side step test, a balance test using a Biodex Stability System, and muscle endurance using CSMI. Results: The Pilates group (n=20) participated in Pilates exercises three times in a week for eight weeks. The results show significant post-test differences in the Pilates group in the following areas: flexibility, agility, power, balance and muscle endurance. There was no significant increase in the control group. Post-exercise, there was no significant difference between the Pilates and control group. Conclusion: The Pilates method can offer significant improvement in personal flexibility, agility, power, balance, and muscle endurance. This study suggests that individuals can improve their Fitness Factors related to motor performance using Pilates exercises that do not require equipment or a high degree of skill. Further study is required to quantify the benefits of Pilates exercise.

  • Surface electromyography (sEMG) is a noninvasive method used to capture electrically muscle activity, which can be easily measured even during exercise. The basic unit of muscle activity is the motor unit, and because an sEMG signal is a superposition of motor unit action potentials, analysis of muscle activity using sEMG should ideally be done from the perspective of motor unit activity. However, conventional techniques can only evaluate sEMG signals based on abstract signal features, such as root-mean-square (RMS) and mean-power-frequency (MPF), and cannot detect individual motor unit activities from an sEMG signal. On the other hand, needle EMG can only capture the activity of a few local motor units, making it extremely difficult to grasp the activity of the entire muscle. Therefore, in this study, a method to visualize the activities of motor units in a single-channel sEMG signal by relocating wavelet coefficients obtained by redundant discrete wavelet analysis is proposed. The information obtained through this method resides in between the information obtained through needle EMG and the information obtained through sEMG using conventional techniques.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of optic pathway on human body during Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation(PNF) treatment. Specifically, it's intened to find out through electromyography(EMG), what kind on change occurred in a patient's muscle when the patient saw the motor direction or when the patient didn't. A pilot experiment Was made over the sophomores of Mokpo Science College the following findings were given; As an EMG was taken over three of muscles that worked during Flexion-Adduction-Ext. Rot., one of the PNF pattern, a patient showed relatively stronger muscle power while watching the movement with his eyes open than the same patient did with his eyes closed, and the disparity between the two cases Was statistically significant(P<0.05). In the pattern of Extension-Abduction-Int.Rot., a patient also showed relatively stronger muscle power while watching the movement than the same patient did without watching it, and the disparity between the two cases also were significant(P<0.05). As seen above, the effect of motor treatment, among physiotherapy methods seemed to be greater if a patient watched the motor direction during treatment, because it gave a stimulus to proprioception.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of elastic taping on the power and velocity error of rectus femoris after muscle fatigue occurred. Method : The subjects of this study were 15 healthy students. The Primus RS was used to measure the power and velocity error of rectus femoris after muscle fatigue occurred. The power and velocity error were measured 3 times which are consist of pre-fatigue, after-fatigue and after 24 hours applied elastic tape on rectus femoris. A elastic tape was attached to rectus femoris between the antero inferior iliac spine (AIIS) and the tibia tuberosity. The collected data was analyzed using one-way repeated-measures ANOVA for comparison of the power and velocity error according to the measured time and Pearson test for correlation between the power and velocity error according to the measured time. Level of significance was set at 0.05. Result : No significant differences of the power and velocity error were found between $1^{st}$ and 2nd, 3rd measurements (p>.05). The power and velocity error, after 24 hours, of the applied elastic tape with muscle fatigue was significantly lower than muscle fatigue with no taping(p<.05). No significant correlations were found between the power and velocity error according to the measured time(p>.05). Conclusion : After applying the elastic tape on the rectus femoris, muscle fatigue occurred, which improved proprioception by decreasing movement error. It will be an important intervention to prevent musculoskeletal injuries and to enhance the motor control in exercise.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the structure and biomechanics of the skeletal muscle. The skeletal muscle takes 40 to 45% of the whole body. Stable posture requires a balance of muscle. However, when the muscle strength is unbalanced, movement initiates. The power generated by the muscle is a primary means to adjust the equilibrium of posture and movement. The structural unit of the skeletal muscle is a long cylindrical type muscle fiber which contains hundreds of nucleus. The thickness of muscle fiber is about $10-100{\mu}m$, and its length is about 1-50cm. Muscle fiber is composed of myofibril that is covered with plasma membrane which is called sarcolemma. In understanding the movement of human body, it is important to comprehend the movement of bone and joint and the tension of muscle. Understanding the structure and biomechanics of muscle also provides basic information on clinical treatment of patients.

  • Although tuberculosis of the central nervous system is well known, the incidence of intramedullary tuberculomas is low and a combination of intramedullary with intracranial tuberculomas is extremely rare. We report a case of disseminated tuberculoma involving brain and spine with miliary pulmonary tuberculosis in a 66-year-old woman initially presenting with fever, general weakness, back pain and motor weakness of both lower extremities. Despite medical therapy, she developed progressive motor weakness of both lower extremities with muscle strength 1/5 in both lower extremities. Urgent surgical intervention was followed and her muscle power and motor functions were improved gradually. The anti-tuberculous drugs were continued and the follow-up magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of brain and spine showed that the lesions had become smaller or disappeared.
