  • A single specimen of Gymnothorax pseudothyrsoideus (424.0 mm TL) belonging to the family Muraenidae, order Anguilliformes, was collected from Jeju Island, Korea, for the first time. The specimen is characterized by jaws closing completely, canine teeth on jaws, teeth not exposed when mouth is closed, ovoid posterior nostril, and body color ranging from yellowish brown to brownish with small dark spots aggregating to form larger spots that from approximately four irregular rows along the body. A comparison of mitochondrial DNA 16S rRNA sequences indicated that this specimen corresponds well with G. pseudothyrsoideus (K2P distance, d=0.002) but differs from other Gymnothorax species (11.9-13.7%). Therefore, the new Korean name "Geu-mul-nun-gom-chi" is proposed for the species G. pseudothyrsoideus.

Molecular Identification and Morphological Description of Gymnothorax minor (Muraenidae, Anguilliformes) Leptocephali off Jeju Island (제주 근해에서 채집된 나망곰치, Gymnothorax minor (뱀장어목, 곰치과) 엽상자어의 분자동정 및 형태기재)

  • Two leptocephali (36.2~69.2 mm in total length) of the family Muraenidae were collected off Jeju Island, Korea. They were identified using 742 base pairs of mitochondrial DNA 12S rRNA sequences, and their morphological description were presented. The two leptocephali were identified to Gymnothorax minor based on genetic distance (d=0.000), being well consistent with that of G. minor adult collected off Tongyeong. Gymnothorax minor leptocephali are characterized by morphological combinations: total myomeres 137~139, predorsal myomeres 32, preanal myomeres 82~86, body depth in total length more than 10%.

  • A single specimen (522.0 mm in total length) of the family Muraenidae, collected from the waters off south-western Jeju-do Island in November 2021, was identified as Echidna nebulosa on the basis of morphological and molecular methods (DNA barcoding). This species is characterized by several morphological traits as follows: 10 rounded molar, median intermaxillary, and vomerine teeth; 4 predorsal vertebrae, 50 preanal vertebrae and 123 total vertebrae; and a pale background color with two rows of 17-20 blackish brown starry blotches along the head and body. As this is the first record of E. nebulosa in Korea, we propose the new Korean names, "Dung-Geun-Ni-Gom-Chi-Sog" for the genus Echidna, and "Beol-Kkok-Gom-Chi" for E. nebulosa.

  • A single specimen of Strophidon sathete (1,302 mm in total length), belonging to the family Muraenidae, was collected in a danish seine off the southern coast of Jejudo Island in April, 2019 for the first time. It was characterized by having unpatterned coloration and thin body, snout slightly rounded, three superorbital pores, four infraobital pores, and six mandibular pores. This species is distinguishable from morphologically similar Gymnothorax albimarginatus inhabiting Korean waters by having all fins dark (vs. fins dark posteriorly with white margin for latter), body depth 1.8~3.1% in total length (vs. 3.2~5.7%), and no dark band on head in less than 50~70 cm (vs. exist). We add Strophidon sathete to the Korean fish fauna and propose a new Korean name, "Ga-neun-gom-chi" for the species because the body is relatively thinner than other similar moray species (G. albimarginatus) in Korea.

  • A single specimen of Strophidon dorsalis (1,254 mm in total length), belonging to the family Muraenidae, was firstly collected in a fish trap off the coastal waters of Jindo Island in July 2018. It was characterized by having unpatterned body coloration, thin body, slightly rounded snout, two superorbital pores, three infraorbital pores, and six mandibular pores. This species is distinguishable from a morphologically similar species, S. sathete inhabiting the Korean waters by having three infraorbital pores (vs. four in S. sathete), last infraorbital pore below an anterior part of the eye (vs. below a posterior part of the eye), body depth 3.2~4.1% in total length (vs. 1.8~3.1%), and total vertebrae 154~167 (vs. 188~200). We add S. dorsalis to the Korean fish fauna and propose a new Korean name, "Seo-mang-gom-chi" for the species.

  • The banded moray eel, previously reported as Gymnothorax reticularis, is redescribed based on one specimen (469.0 mm TL) collected from a fish trap in Geoje-do, South Sea, Korea. It is characterized by 19 dark brown vertical bars; 139 total vertebrae; both jaw teeth large, strong, and slightly serrated; 1 median intermaxillary tooth; small and blunt vomerine teeth. Although the banded moray eel has been reported as Gymnothorax reticularis in Korea by some ichthyologists, this study suggests that its scientific name should be changed to Gymnothorax minor based on its number of vertebrae and presence of a median intermaxillary tooth.
