  • Generation and recycling potential of organic waste in Korea were estimated. Status of organic waste composting and compost utilization also were surveyed to promote the recycling of organic waste. From 1994 to 1997, generation of garbage decreased gradually while recycling rate increased due to positive governmental strategy. During the same period, livestock waste increased 11.2%. Municipal wastewater sludge was generated 3,500 ton/day which was 0.03% of wastewater treated in 1996. The energy Potential of industrial organic waste was estimated to 288 million TOE which was 1.75% of the nationwide first energy consumption in 1996. Recycling of industrial sludge was low to 31%, while recycling of animal waste, plant scraps, and wasted paper were relatively high over 50%. Industrial sludge should be recycled more as it was the most part of industrial organic waste. Conventional composting materials were mainly livestock waste, food processing waste, fishery waste, sawdust, and nightsoil. Garbage and sludge have been composted recently. 420,000 tons of compost in 1996 were produced by 288 makers, the most of which were utilized in agriculture. It was suggested that separated collection, compost standard, and quality management should be provided to promote the composting of organic waste.

  • A number of ocean outfalls are located around coastal area over the United States and discharge primary treated effluent into deep water for efficient wastewater treatment. Two of them, the Sand Island and Honouliuli municipal wastewater outfalls, are located on the south coast of Oahu. There have been growing interests about the plume dynamics around the ocean outfalls since plume discharged from the multiport diffuser may have significant impacts on coastal communities and immediate consequence on public health. Among the studies of plume dynamics performed in the vicinity of both outfalls, Project MB-4 in the Mamala Bay Study recently made with the funding in the $ 9 million amount statistically dealt with the near-field behavior of the plumes at the Sand Island and Honouliuli outfalls. However, Project MB-4 predicted much higher surfacing frequency than the realistic value obtained by model studies by Oceanit Laboratories, Inc.. It is suggested that improvements should be made in the application of the plume model to more simulate the actual discharge characteristics and ocean conditions. In this study, it has been recommended that input parameters in plume models reflect realistic density profile over the entire water column since. in the previous Mamala Bay Study, the density profiles were measured at 5m depth increments extending from 13 to 63 m depth (the density profile on the upper portion of water column was not included, Roberts 1995). It is proved that the density stratification is the important parameter for the submergence of the plume. In this study, as one of the important parameters, plume rise and initial dilution reflecting the density profile over the entire water column have been taken into account for more reliable plume behavior description.

  • The seeding sources and concentration of ammonia on anaerobic digestion were investigated by batch culture bioreactors. The sources of seeding on anaerobic digestion were from swine wastewater collection pit of a hog raising farm and from anaerobic digestion sludge of a municipal sewage treatment plant. The inhibition of ammonia on anaerobic microorganisms was initiated at ammonia concentration of $1,500\;mgNH_4-N/L$ and it's effect was increased by increased by increasing ammonia concentration up to $3,500\;mgNH_4-N/L$ regardless the sources of seeding as evidenced by decreases in COD removal efficiencies and biogas yields. The inhibition occurred to not only methanogens but also acidogens since the concentration of volatile fatty acids was maintained at 50 mg/L The COD removal efficiency and biogas yield were Maintained constantly while increasing ammonia concentration up to $3,500\;mgNH_4-N/L$ when swine wastewater collection pit was used as a seeding; however, those were decreased while increasing ammonia concentration when anaerobic digestion sludge was used as a seeding. The results indicate that the seeding acclimated to high concentrations of ammonia for long time was easy in adaptation to high ammonia concentration and less subjective to ammonia inhibitory effects.

  • In the analysis of the common categories, moisture contents and organic concentrations were not much different according to the types of industry or treatment facilities. When heavy metals contribution of the sludge from domestic and industrial wastewater treatment facilities was analyzed, As, Hg and Cr concentrations were relatively high among 42 standards of the fertilizer law. As concentration war higher in 28 of 42 facilities (67%) than limits of the fertilizer law. Hg concentration was not acceptable in the 21 of 42 facilities (50%). Cr concentration was not acceptable in 9 of 42 facilities (21%). From these results, It is found that As is the most frequently detectable component and contaminant than any other heavy metals in sludges. The data from this experiment was also compared with the guidelines of harmful organics and the rest of heavy metals that are regulated by some of the foreign countries. Be, Se and Mo concentrations were lower than the limits. Among the organics, the average concentration of PCB (10 samples) was 26.2 ppb. The highest concentration was 162.6 ppb in the sludge of the municipal wastewater treatment facilities and the lowest concentration was 2.14 ppb from the skin manufacturing industry. From the leaching analysis of re-manufacturing goods from the sludge, most of them was acceptable on the regulation law but Cr concentration was over the limit.

  • Soils and rice plants in wastewater irrigated area of the Mangyeong River receiving waster from the Jeonju Industrial Complex and municipal sewage were sampled at two depths to assess the nature and content of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn, particularly with respect to distance from wastewater source. For metal levels of soils in these area, no difference in the heavy metal contents between the surface and the subsurface soils was found. Total contents of Cu, Pb and Zn in soils were negatively correlated with distance from the source. A positive correlation was found between contents of total and 0.1N-HCl extractable or $1N-CH_3COONH_4$ extractable heavy metals in surface soils of these area. Total contents of heavy metals in soils were positively correlated with clay, soil organic matter and cation exchange capacity. Heavy metal contents of brown rice sampled at the Jeon-ju Industrial Complex area ranged from 0.15 to 0.91 ppm for Cd, from 1.13 to 5.68 ppm for Cu, from 0.22 to 7.16 ppm for Pb and from 11.74 to 38.66 ppm for Zn. Negative correlation was found between the contents of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in the brown rice and the distance from the source. The contents of Cd, Cu and Zn in rice straw were positively correlated with those in the brown rice.

  • Electroflotation (EF) was conducted for activated sludge thickening to investigate the effects of sludge SVI (sludge volume index) and chemical conditioning. Return sludge samples were used for the experiment, which were collected from municipal wastewater treatment plants. The performance of sludge thickening was significantly dependent on sludge SVI. For the sludges with SVI values in a range from 50 to about 150 mL/g, the maximum float content decreased rapidly from 8.4 to 3.5% and flotation compressibility followed the same pattern. In cases of sludges with SVI higher than 150 mL/g, those results showed low content levels without large changes. Gas/solids ratio tended to increase with an increase in SVI. When polyelectrolyte was added into sludges for the conditioning, compressibility increased up to 75% and gas/solids ratio was reduced up to about 35% under the condition of microbubble production rate of 530 mL/h, however, there was no consistent effect of chemical conditioning on the maximum float solids content; some cases were positive but the others negative. It was expected that the optimum dose of electrolyte depends on sludge SVI and an excessive chemical dose causes a performance deterioration of flotation thickening.

  • Improvement of the solid-liquid separation efficiency in the secondary sedimentation tank of the biological treatment process, is known to be increasing effectiveness of the overall system operation. Sewage treatment plant effluent SS is composed of most organic substances. In order to reduce the SS component in the secondary sedimentation tank discharge, fine SS components constituting the heterogeneous should be increased by its own aggregation (self flocculation), so that can be deleted through their precipitation. So, it is improved through using the installation of double rectification wall in this secondary tank. In case, sewage is rapidly increased due to the daily change of the influent water, it was confirmed that suspended solids caused by the impact load are processed stably. Therefore, there is a need for a facility installation which can be its own aggregation for reduction suspended solids in secondary sedimentation tank.

  • Batch experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of electron donor on reductive dechlorination of 2,4,5-trichlorophenol by a methanogenic consortium. The methanogenic consortium was obtained from the anaerobic digester of a municipal wastewater treatment plant. The batch reactor containing methanogenic consortium was spiked with 2,4,6-trichlorophenol at 10 mg/$\ell$. Acetate, ethanol, glucose of methanol, each was added as an electron donor for methanogenic consortium. During the course of the experiments liquid samples were taken from the batch reactor to measure dechlorination rate and find the dechlorination pathway of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol. After incubation 2,4,6-trichlorophenol was first dechlorinated to 2,4-dichlorophenol and then to 4-chlorophenol. Phenol was not detected in the batch reactor the highest rate of dechlorination of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol was observed when ethanol was used as an electron donor.

  • This study was conducted to characterise the sidestream from municipal wastewater treatment plants and its effects on the main treatment process. The flow rates and waste strengthes from each unit processes were measured and analysed, and finally determined its characteristics through the mass balance techniques. A laboratory scale completely mixed activated sludge was operated at $20^{\circ}C$ and fed in pulse with the sidestream to simulate the actual operating conditions. The study results indicated that the flow rates of sidestream ranged from 1.2 to 1.8 percent of the influent flow. However, the organic and nutrient loading rates could be increased to about 20 to 30 percent at an average, but 40 to 70 percent at a peak condition. It appears that the impurities from the sidestreams were not easily settled and resulted in lower primary efficiency. Consequently, it increased the organic loading rates to the aeration tank and the efficiencies were decreased at least about 10 percent at an average in comparison to the ordinary condition without the sidestream. With the peak condition, the efficiencies could not reach more than 80 percent for the organic removal and 50 percent for the nitrification.
