  • In this paper, we propose a new system which captures real depth and color information from natural scene and implemented it. Based on it, we produced stereo and multiview images for 3-dimensional stereoscopic contents and introduced the production of a digital hologram which is considered to the next-generation image. The system consists of both a camera system for capturing images which correspond to RGB and depth images and softwares (SWs) for various image processings which consist of pre-processing such as rectification and calibration, 3D warping, and computer generated hologram (CGH). The camera system use a vertical rig with two paris of depth and RGB camera and a specially manufactured cold mirror which has the different transmittance according to wavelength for obtaining images with the same view point. The wavelength of our mirror is about 850nm. Each algorithm was implemented using C and C++ and the implemented system can be operated in real-time.

  • In this paper, a new multiview stereoscopic 3D display system using a VHLS(volume holographic lenticular sheet) is suggested. The VHLS, which acts just like an optical direction modulator, can be implemented by recording the diffraction gratings corresponding each directional vector of the multiview stereoscopic images in the holographic recording material by using the angularly multiplexed recording property of the conventional volume hologram. Then, this fabricated VHLS is attached to the panel of a LCD spatial light modulator and used to diffract each of the multiview image loaded in a SLM to the corresponding spatial direction for making a 3D stereo view-zone. Accordingly, in this paper, the operational principle and characteristics of the VHLS are analyzed and an optimized 4-view VHLS is fabricated by using a commercial photopolymer. Then, a new VHLS-based 4-view stereoscopic 3D display system is implemented. Through some experimental results using a 4-view image synthesized with adaptive disparity estimation algorithm, it is suggested that implementation of a new VHLS-based multiview stereoscopic 3D display system can be possible.

  • A computer vision technique of estimating the location of an unmanned ground vehicle is proposed. Identifying the location of the unmaned vehicle is very important task for automatic navigation of the vehicle. Conventional positioning sensors may fail to work properly in some real situations due to internal and external interferences. Given a DSM(Digital Surface Map), location of the vehicle can be estimated by the registration of the DSM and multiview range images obtained at the vehicle. Registration of the DSM and range images yields the 3D transformation from the coordinates of the range sensor to the reference coordinates of the DSM. To estimate the vehicle position, we first register a range image to the DSM coarsely and then refine the result. For coarse registration, we employ a fast random sample matching method. After the initial position is estimated and refined, all subsequent range images are registered by applying a pair-wise registration technique between range images. To reduce the accumulation error of pair-wise registration, we periodically refine the registration between range images and the DSM. Virtual environment is established to perform several experiments using a virtual vehicle. Range images are created based on the DSM by modeling a real 3D sensor. The vehicle moves along three different path while acquiring range images. Experimental results show that registration error is about under 1.3m in average.

  • We present an autostereoscopic 3D display system using volume hologram. In this proposed system, the interference pattern of angular multiplexed plane reference and object beams are recorded into a volume hologram, which plays a role of guiding object beams of multi-view images into the desired perspective directions. For reconstruction, object beams containing the desired multi-view image information, which satisfy Bragg matching condition, are illuminated in the time-division multiplexed manner onto the crystal. Then multiple stereoscopic images are projected to the display plane for autostereoscopic 3D viewing. It is possible to make a high resolution multiview 3D display system independent upon the viewpoint.

  • Three-dimensional (3D) displays provide a significant advantage over traditional 2D displays by offering realistic images, and table-style displays in particular are ideal for generating 3D images that appear to float above a table. These systems are based on multiview displays, and are typically operated using temporal or spatial multiplexing methods to expand the viewing zone (VZ). The VZ is an expanded space that results from merging the sub-viewing zones (SVZs) from which an individual view is made. To increase the viewing angle, many SVZs are usually required. In this paper, we propose a table-ornament electronic holographic display that utilizes 3f parabolic mirrors. In holography, the VZ is not simply expanded but synthesized from SVZs to implement continuous motion parallax. Our proposed system is small enough to be applied as a table ornament, in contrast to traditional tabletop displays that are large and not easily portable. By combining multiview and holographic technologies, our system achieves continuous motion parallax. Specifically, our system projects 340 views using a time-multiplexing method over a range of 240 degrees.

  • The pixel value of depth image is depth value so that different objects which are placed on nearby position have similar pixel value. Moreover, the pixels of depth image have distinct pixel values compared to adjacent pixels while those of color image has very similar values. Accordingly distorted depth image of multiview video plus depth (MVD) needs proper error concealment methods considering the characteristics of depth image when transmission errors are happened. In this paper, classifying regions of depth image to consider edge directions and then applying adaptive error concealment methods to each region are proposed. Recovered depth images utilize with multiview video data to synthesize intermediate-view point video. The synthesized view is evaluated by objective quality metrics to demonstrate proposed method performance.

  • In the present paper we propose a new method of intermediate view reconstruction between stereo images using belief propagation_based stereo matching. Intermediate view reconstruction is an important step for multiview 3D display. Many previous paper about intermediate view reconstruction using depth information to synthesize interview though stereo matching were proposed. But depth information is different to estimated accurately. In the present paper, in order to obtain accurate depth information, belief propagation_based stereo matching was used.

  • This paper represents a new approach which addresses quality degradation of a synthesized view, when a virtual camera moves forward. Generally, interpolation technique using only two neighboring views is used when a virtual view is synthesized. Because a size of the object increases when the virtual camera moves forward, most methods solved this by interpolation in order to synthesize a virtual view. However, as it generates a degraded view such as blurred images, we prevent a synthesized view from being blurred by using more cameras in multiview camera configuration. That is, we solve this by applying super-resolution concept which reconstructs a high resolution image from several low resolution images. Therefore, data fusion is executed by geometric warping using a disparity of the multiple images followed by deblur operation. Experimental results show that the image quality can further be improved by reducing blur in comparison with interpolation method.

  • Since the depth and texture images have been widely used for generating 3-dimensional stereoscopic image, the security of them have been focused. In this paper, we propose a new watermarking technique for copyright of stereo and multiview images which is generated in an arbitrary viewpoint by depth and texture image. After the mark space is selected for preserving watermark through DIBR (depth-image-based rendering) process which uses 3D warping, the texture image is transformed to the frequency coefficient using 2D DCT (discrete cosine transform). Some parts of them are quantized, which is the corresponding process to watermarking. The embedded watermark is not conformed by eyes, so we identified the invisibility of the proposed method. In case of appling attacks of general image process, we also identified the robustness of it.

  • In this research, we conducted an experiment on evaluating the extending depth information method and surface reconstruction method and the interaction of these two methods in order to enhance the final intermediate view images, which are acquired using DIBR (Depth-Image-Based Rendering) method. We evaluated the experimental control groups using the Microsoft's "Ballet" and "Break Dancer" data sets with three different hole-filling algorithms. The result revealed that the quality was improved the most by applying both extending depth information and surface reconstruction method as compared to the previous point clouds only. In addition, it found that the quality of the intermediate images was improved vastly by only applying extending depth information when using no hole-filling algorithm.
