This paper presents the results of static vertical load tests carried out on a model building frame supported by pile groups embedded in cohesionless soil (sand). The effect of soil interaction on displacements and rotation at the column base and also the shears and bending moments in the columns of the building frame were investigated. The experimental results have been compared with those obtained from the finite element analysis and conventional method of analysis. Soil nonlinearity in the lateral direction is characterized by the p-y curves and in the axial direction by nonlinear vertical springs along the length of the piles (${\tau}-z$ curves) at their tips (Q-z curves). The results reveal that the conventional method gives the shear force in the column by about 40-60%, the bending moment at the column top about 20-30% and at the column base about 75-100% more than those from the experimental results. The response of the frame from the experimental results is in good agreement with that obtained by the nonlinear finite element analysis.
The concrete bridge is likely to produce fatigue cracks during long period of service due to the moving vehicular loads and the degeneration of materials. This paper deals with the time-frequency analysis of a coupled bridge-vehicle system. The bridge is modeled as an Euler beam with breathing cracks. The vehicle is represented by a two-axle vehicle model. The equation of motion of the coupled bridge-vehicle system is established using the finite element method, and the Newmark direct integration method is adopted to calculate the dynamic responses of the system. The effect of breathing cracks on the dynamic responses of the bridge is investigated. The time-frequency characteristics of the responses are analyzed using both the Hilbert-Huang transform and wavelet transform. The results of time-frequency analysis indicate that complicated non-linear and non-stationary features will appear due to the breathing effect of the cracks.
Nanometer-sized structures are being applied to many fields including micro/nano electronics, optoelectronics, quantum computing, biosensors, etc. Micro contact printing is one of the most promising methods for manufacturing the nanometer-sized structures. The crucial element for the micro contact printing is the nano-resolution printing technique using polymeric stamps. In this study, a multi-scale analysis scheme for simulating the micro contact printing process is proposed and some useful analysis results are presented. Using the slip-link model [1], the dependency of viscoelasticity on molecular weight of polymer stamp is predicted. Deformation behaviors of polymeric stamps are analyzed using finite element method based upon the predicted viscoelastic properties.

We present a new global/local analysis with the aid of MLS(Moving Least Square)-based finite elements which can handle an arbitrary number of nodes on every element side. It give a great flexibility in constructing finite element meshes at the specified local regions without remeshing. Compared to other type global/local analysis, it does not require any superimposed mesh or need not solve the equilibrium equation twice as well as shows an excellent accuracy. To demonstrate the performance of proposed scheme, we will show several examples in relation to capturing highly local stress field.

In this paper, the forced vibration problem of an Euler-Bernoulli beam that is joined with a semi-infinite field of a compressible fluid is considered as a boundary value problem (BVP). This BVP includes two partial differential equations (PDE) and some boundary conditions (BC), which are introduced comprehensively. After that, the closed-form solution of this fluid-structure interaction problem is obtained in the frequency domain. Some mathematical techniques are utilized, and two unknown functions of the BVP, including the beam displacement at each section and the fluid dynamic pressure at all points, are attained. These functions are expressed as an infinite series and evaluated quantitatively for a real example in the results section. In addition, finite element analysis is carried out for comparison.
The lattice strain evolution within polycrystalline solids is influenced by the crystal orientation and grain interaction. For multi-phase polycrystals, due to potential large differences in properties of each phase, lattice strains are even more strongly influenced by grain interaction compared with single phase polycrystals. In this research, the effects of the grain interaction and crystal orientation on the lattice strain evolution in a two-phase polycrystals are investigated. Duplex steel of austenite and ferrite phases with equal volume fraction is selected for the analysis, of which grain arrangement sensitivity is confirmed in the literature through both experiment and simulation (Hedstr$\ddot{o}$m et al. 2010). Analysis on the grain interaction is performed using the results obtained from the finite element calculation based on the model of restricted slip within crystallographic planes. The dependence of lattice strain on grain interactions as well as crystal orientation is confirmed and motivated the need for more in-depth analysis.

In analyzing the nano-scale behavior of nano devices or materials, QC method is efficient because it does not treat all the atoms. But for more accurate analysis in QC method, it is important to consider temperature and surface effects. In finite temperature, free energy is considered instead of potential energy. Because the surface area to volume ratio increases as the length scale of a body decreases, the surface effects are more dominant. In this paper, temperature related Cauchy-Born rule and surface Cauchy-Born rule are proposed to configurate the strain energy density. This method is applied to small and homogeneous deformation in two dimensional problem using finite element simulation.
The aerostatic instability of cable-supported bridges is studied, with emphasis placed on modeling of the geometric nonlinear effects of various components of cable-supported bridges. Two-node catenary cable elements, which are more rational than truss elements, are adopted for simulating cables with large or small sags. Aerostatic loads are expressed in terms of the mean drag, lift and pitching moment coefficients. The geometric nonlinear analysis is performed with the dead loads and wind loads applied in two stages. The critical wind velocity for aerostatic instability is obtained as the condition when the pitching angle of the bridge deck becomes unbounded. Unlike those existing in the literature, each intermediate step of the incremental-iterative procedure is clearly given and interpreted. As such, the solutions obtained for the bridges are believed to be more rational than existing ones. Comparisons and discussions are given for the examples studied.
This paper presents the derivation of the generalized governing equations in theory of elasticity, their weak forms and the some applications in the numerical analysis of structural mechanics. Unlike the differential equations in classical elasticity theory, the generalized equations of the equilibrium and compatibility equations presented here take the form of integral equations, and the generalized equilibrium equations contain the classical differential equations and the boundary conditions in a single equation. By using appropriate test functions, the weak forms of these generalized governing equations can be established. It can be shown that various variational principles in structural analysis are merely the special cases of these weak forms of generalized governing equations in elasticity. The present weak forms of elasticity equations extend greatly the choices of the trial functions for approximate solutions in the numerical analysis of various engineering problems. Therefore, the weak forms of generalized governing equations in elasticity provide a powerful modeling tool in the computational structural mechanics.

One of the hazard of nature is a drought. Its impact varies from region to region and it is difficult for people to understand and define due to differences in hydrometeorological and social economic aspects across much of the country. In the most general sense, drought originates from a deficiency of precipitation over an extended period of time, usually month, season or more, resulting in a water shortage for some activity, group, or environmental sector. Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) is well known and has been used to study aridity changes in modern and past climates. The PDSI index is estimated over US using USHCN historical data.(e.g. precipitation, temperature, latitude and soil moisture). In this study, low frequency drought variability associated with climate variability such as El-Nino and ENSO is mainly investigated. With respect to the multi-scale analysis, wavelet transform analysis is applied to the PDSI index in order to extract the low frequency band corresponding to 2-8 years. Finally, low frequency patterns associated with drought by comparing global wavelet power, with significance test are explored.
