  • Due to its topographic complexities and various climatical condition, Korea exhibits diverse forest types. Dominant tree species in this zone are Quercus spp., Betula spp., Zelkova spp., Fraxinus spp., Pinus densiflora, Pinus koraiensis, and Pinus thunbergii ete. Genetic conservation in forest species in Korea there are three ways ; one is in situ, other is ex situ and third is in-facility conservation. In situ conservation include that are the present status of conservation of rare and endangered flora and ecosystem, the reserved forest, the national and provincial park, and the gene pool of natural forests. Ex situ conservation means to be established the new forest from in situ forest stands, progeny and provenance test populations, seed orchard and clone banks, and gene conservation in-facility. As a tool for low temperature storage, several aspects on in vitro system were studied ; (1) establishment of in vitro cultures from juvenile and/or rejuvenated tissues, (2) induction of multiple shoots from the individual micropropagules, (3) elongation of the proliferated shoots. Studies on cold storage for short-and long-term maintenance of in vitro cultures under $4^{\circ}C$ in the refrigerator were conducted. For the cryopreservation at $-196^{\circ}C$, various factors affecting survivability of the plant materials are being examined. The necessity of gene conservation of forest trees is enlarged not only to increase the adaptability for various environments but also to gain the breeding materials in the future. For effective gene conservation of forest trees, I would like to suggest followings ; 1. Forest stands reserved for other than the gene conservation purposes such as national parks should be investigated by botanical and gene-ecological studies for selecting bio-diversity and gene conservation stands. 2. Reserved forest for gene pool should be extented both economically important tree spp. and non-economical species. 3. Reserved forest for progeny test and clone bank should be systematically investigated for the use of Ex situ forest gene conservation. 4. We have to find out a new methodology of genetic analysis determining the proper and effective size of subpopulation for in situ gene conservation. 5. We should develop a new tree breeding systems for successful gene conservation and utilization of the genetic resources. 6. New method of in-facility gene conservation using advanced genetic engineering should be developed to save time and economic resources. 7. For the conservation of species with short-life span of seed or shortage of knowledge of seed physiology, tissue culture techniques will be played a great role for gene conservation of those species. 8. It is are very useful conservation not only of genes but of genotypes which were selected already by breeding program. 9. Institutional and administrative arrangements including legistlation must be necessarily taken for gene conservation of forest trees. 10. It is national problems for conservation of forest resources which have been rapidly destroyed because of degenerating environmental condition and of inexperienced management system of bio-diversity and gene conservation. 11. In order to international cooperation for exchanging data of bio-diversity and gene conservation, we should connect to international net works as soon as possible.

  • This study was conducted to provide growth characteristics and stand information in preparation for natural regeneration method and silvicultural treatment of seed tree method in Korean red pine stands by using the field inventoried data 18 years after the seed tree regeneration method in 2001 and analyzing the stand and sapling characteristics. The study area was located in the Research Forest of Kangwon National University, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do. In November 2018, we collected tree measurement factors, such as diameter at breast height (DBH), height, crown class, stem quality, tree age, and annual height increment on the established plots. We calculated the basal area, volume, height-diameter ratio (HD ratio), and additional stand density variables such as the relative density and %stocking to analyze the managed stands. The number of mother trees was 58 trees/ha, with a 17.7% stocking level, whereas the number of saplings was 2,330 trees/ha, with a 79.0% stocking level. In germination, the age distribution of saplings ranged from 2001 to 2007, with most belonging to 15-16 years. The development condition of saplings was 10 cm in DBH and 8 m in height. DBH and height were higher as the crown class is more dominant, and this difference was statistically significant in the analysis of variance and Duncan's multiple comparison test (p<0.0001). HD ratio ranged mostly between 80% and 90%, and more than 95% of sapling stems were of high quality, with a straight, unbroken top, non-sweep, and non-diseased stem. On average, the annual height increment of saplings was 21.9 cm at 1 year, 43.3 cm at 5 years, 54.3 cm at 10 years, and 64.3 cm at 15 years. The overall height growth with age increased smoothly. According to the analysis of covariance, the annual height growth by crown class differed significantly. The regression analysis parameters revealed that annual height growth increased with age and dominant crown class.

  • The study aim was to investigate changes in the diameter, number of standing trees, stand volume per ha and site index by the forest survey order, climate zone (northern temperate, central temperate, southern temperate, and warm temperate regions), and altitude in 100 m intervals) by collecting samples of Robinia pseudoacacia from the fifth, sixth, and seventh national forest survey datasets. The rotation cutting age, which is a standard used for wood, was calculated. The changes were statistically analyzed by performing ANOVA and the Duncan multiple test. Diameter growth naturally increased according to the forest survey order and was lowest in the southern temperate region by climate zone and lowest at the 301-400 m altitude. The number of standing trees per ha did not change according to the forest survey order and altitude, and the density was highest in the central temperate region and lowest in the southern temperate region. The stand volume per ha increased according to the forest survey order, and the climate zone was divided into two groups: ① northern temperate region and central temperate region, ② southern temperate region and warm temperate region. The stand volume growth was highest at the 201-300 m point. Thesite index showed results similar to the change pattern of the stand volume per ha. The growth curve, which can be seen by the change in stand volume per ha, was estimated by applying theWeibull formula, and the stand volume per ha was estimated to reach approximately 200 m3/ha at 50-60 years. The rotation of the highest production in volume, which is the standard for using trees as wood rather than honey sources, was calculated to be 34 years.

  • Efficient hardware implementation of address lookup is one of the most important design issues of internet routers. Address lookup significantly impacts router performance since routers need to process tens-to-hundred millions of packets per second in real time. In this paper, we propose a practical IP address lookup structure based on the binary tree of prefixes of different lengths. The proposed structure produces multiple balanced trees, and hence it solve the issues due to the unbalanced binary prefix tree of the existing scheme. The proposed structure is implemented using pipelined binary search combined with a small size TCAM. Performance evaluation results show that the proposed architecture requires a 2000-entry TCAM and total 245 kbyte SRAMs to store about 30,000 prefix samples from MAE-WEST router, and an address lookup is achieved by a single memory access. The proposed scheme scales very well with both of large databases and longer addresses as in IPv6.

  • Data mining is a process of discovering useful patterns for decision making from an amount of data. It has recently received much attention in a wide range of business and engineering fields. Classifying a group into subgroups is one of the most important subjects in data mining. Tree-based methods, known as decision trees, provide an efficient way to finding the classification model. The primary concern in tree learning is to minimize a node impurity, which is evaluated using a target variable in the data set. However, there are situations where multiple target variable should be taken into account, for example, such as manufacturing process monitoring, marketing science, and clinical and health analysis. The purpose of this article is to present some methods for measuring the node impurity, which are applicable to data sets with multivariate target variables. For illustration, a numerical cxample is given with discussion.

  • It is commonly believed that disease of human or economic traits of livestock are caused not by single gene acting alone, but by multiple genes interacting with one an-other. This issue is difficult due to the limitations of parametric statistical method like as logistic regression for detection of gene effects that are dependent solely on interactions with other genes and with environmental exposures. Multifactor dimensionality reduction (MDR) nonparametric statistical method, to improve the identification of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) associated with the Hanwoo(Korean cattle) carcass cold weight, is applied and compared with ANOVA results.

  • A Simple tree-structured line simplification method, which exactly follows the Douglas-Peucker algorithm, has a strength for its simplification index to be involved into the hierarchical data structures. However, the hierarchy of simplification index, which is the core in a simple tree method, may not be always guaranteed. It is validated that the local property of line features in such global approaches as Douglas-Peucker algorithm is apt to be neglected and the construction of hierarchy with no thought of locality may entangle the hierarchy. This study designed a new approach, CALS(Convex hull Applied Line Simplification), a) to search critical points of line feature with convex hull search technique, b) to construct the hierarchical data structure based on these critical points, c) to simplify the line feature using multiple trees. CALS improved the spatial accuracy as compared with a simple tree method. Especially CALS was excellent in case of line features having the great extent of sinuosity.

  • In this paper, a low-complexity embedded compression (EC) Codec algorithm for the wavelet video coder is applied to reduce excessive external memory requirements. The EC algorithm is used to achieve a fixed compression ratio of 50 % under the near-lossless-compression constraint. The EC technique can reduce the 50 % memory requirement for intermediate low-frequency coefficients during multiple discrete wavelet transform stages compared with direct implementation of the wavelet video encoder of this paper. Furthermore, the EC scheme based on a forward adaptive quantization and fixed length coding can save bandwidth and size of buffer between DWT and SPIHT to 50 %. Simulation results show that our EC algorithm present only PSNR degradation of 0.179 and 0.162 dB in average when the target bit-rate of the video coder are 1 and 0.5 bpp, respectively.

  • For sharing XML data by many users, a way of concurrency and access control is required for isolating update actions such as inserting and deleting subtrees. Exisiting locking mechanisms as 2PL or MGL suffer low concurrency when applied to tree structures. In this paper, list data subtrees model is proposed based on the semantics expressed in DTD. In this model, tree updating actions such as inserting and deleting subtrees are considered only for the repetitive parts of XML trees. The proposed model guarantees that the result XML tree after applying a tree updating action is always valid, even when multiple users access the tree at the same time. Also, a new locking mechanism called list lock-ing protocol is proposed. The new locking protocol is expected to show better accessility with less number of locking objects compared to the Helmer's OO2PL model. Since update actions on a shared XML tree usually applied to the repetitive parts of the tree, the proposed model is expected to provide a useful way for efficient data sharing when combined with previous locking methods on terminal node data.

  • Elsholtzia hallasanensis, E. springia, and E. splendens var. fasciflora (Lamiaceae) were reported recently as new species or new varieties of E. splendens according to their morphological characteristics. To reappraise the taxonomic status of these additional taxa and to determine the relationships between all Korean Elsholtzia taxa except E. saxatilis, which is distributed in North Korea, molecular studies based on the nrDNA (ITS) and cpDNA (rpl16, and trnH-psbA) sequences of seven taxa of Elsholtzia and one outgroup were carried out. The molecular data support that E. angustifolia and E. minima are distinct species from E. splendens and E. ciliata, respectively, because they have several private marker genes and show monophyly. The molecular data also support that E. splendens has a very close taxonomic relationship with both E. hallasanensis and E. springia. We found that E. splendens var. fasciflora, with multiple inflorescence, was based on several private marker genes and on the monophyly of its trees, suggesting that it can be considered as a variety. Elsholtzia springia, with the same sequences and the same morphological characteristics with E. hallasanensis after transplanting, should be treated as a synonym of E. hallasanensis. Moreover, we consider the taxonomic status of E. hallasanensis as E. splendens var. hallasanensis (Y. Lee) N.S. Lee & C.S. Lee, stat. nov.
