  • The parameters of the multiple-vertical-line-element model (MVLEM) of reinforced concrete (RC) shear walls are often empirically determined, which causes large simulation errors. To improve the simulation accuracy of the MVLEM for RC shear walls, this paper proposed a novel method to determine the MVLEM parameters using the artificial neural network (ANN). First, a comprehensive database containing 193 shear wall specimens with complete parameter information was established. And the shear walls were simulated using the classic MVLEM. The average simulation errors of the lateral force and drift of the peak and ultimate points on the skeleton curves were approximately 18%. Second, the MVLEM parameters were manually optimized to minimize the simulation error and the optimal MVLEM parameters were used as the label data of the training of the ANN. Then, the trained ANN was used to generate the MVLEM parameters of the collected shear walls. The results show that the simulation error of the predicted MVLEM was reduced to less than 13% from the original 18%. Particularly, the responses generated by the predicted MVLEM are more identical to the experimental results for the testing set, which contains both flexure-control and shear-control shear wall specimens. It indicates that establishing MVLEM for RC shear walls using ANN is feasible and promising, and that the predicted MVLEM substantially improves the simulation accuracy.

  • When a camera installed on a vehicle is used, estimation of the camera pose including tilt, roll, and pan angle with respect to the world coordinate system is important to associate camera coordinates with world coordinates. Previous approaches using huge calibration patterns have the disadvantage that the calibration patterns are costly to make and install. And, previous approaches exploiting multiple vanishing points detected in a single image are not suitable for automotive applications as a scene where multiple vanishing points can be captured by a front camera is hard to find in our daily environment. This paper proposes a camera pose estimation method. It collects multiple images of lane markings while changing the horizontal angle with respect to the markings. One vanishing point, the cross point of the left and right lane marking, is detected in each image, and vanishing line is estimated based on the detected vanishing points. Finally, camera pose is estimated from the vanishing line. The proposed method is based on the fact that planar motion does not change the vanishing line of the plane and the normal vector of the plane can be estimated by the vanishing line. Experiments with large and small tilt and roll angle show that the proposed method outputs accurate estimation results respectively. It is verified by checking the lane markings are up right in the bird's eye view image when the pan angle is compensated.

  • Hidden station problem can occur in power-line communication (PLC) networks. A simple solution to the problem has been proposed to use request-to-send (RTS)/clear-to-send (CTS) exchange, but this approach cannot solve the hidden station problem perfectly. This paper revisits the problem for PLC networks and designs a protocol to solve it. We first analyze the throughput performance degradation when the hidden station problem occurs in PLC networks. Then, we propose an interferer aware multiple access (IAMA) protocol to enhance throughput and fairness performances, which uses unique characteristics of PLC networks. Using the RTS/CTS exchange adaptively, the IAMA protocol protects receiving stations from being interfered with neighboring networks. Through extensive simulations, we show that our proposed protocol outperforms conventional random access protocols in terms of throughput and fairness.

  • Designers are frequently faced with multiple quality issues in injection molded parts. These issues are usually In conflict with each other, and thus tradeoff needs to be made to reach a final compromised solutions. The objective of this study is to develop an automated injection molding design methodology, whereby part defects such as warpage and weld line are optimized. The features of the proposed methodology are as follows: first, Utility Function approach is applied to transform the original multiple objective problem into single objective problem. Second is an implementation of a direct search-based Injection molding optimization procedure with automated consideration of process variation. The Space Reduction Method based on Taguchi's DOE(Design Of Experiment) is used as a general optimization tool in this study. The computational experimental verification of the methodology was partially carried out for a can model of Cavallero Plastics Incorporation, U. S. A. Applied to production, this study will be of immense value to companies in reducing the product development time and enhancing the product quality.

  • This paper presents a fast sequencing algorithm for a mixed model assembly line with multiple workstations which minimize the total utility work and idle time. We compare the proposed algorithms with another heuristic, the Tsai-based heuristic, for a sequencing problem that minimizes the total utility works. Numerical experiments are used to evaluate the performance and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. The Tsai-based heuristic performs best in terms of utility work, but the fast sequencing algorithm performs well for both utility work and idle time. However, the computational complexity of the fast sequencing algorithm is O (KN) while the Tsai-based algorithm is O (KNlogN). Actual computational time of the fast sequencing heuristic is 2-6 times faster than that of the Tsai-based heuristic.

  • Power-line interference(PLI) can distort certain regions in analysing the ECG signal. In particular, the regions such as P and R wave that are important element in diagnosing with arrhythmia is expressed as different type of noise according to the case whether power-line frequency is multiples of sampling frequency and or not. Noise characteristics is also divided into linearity and non-linearity. In this paper, adaptive subtraction method for removing variable PLI of ECG signal is proposed. We classify the multiple relationship between power line and sampling frequency as Multiple and Non-multiple. PLI of Linear segment is extracted through moving average filter, PLI of non-linear segment is extracted through the interference component that is extracted in the linear segment and stored in the temporary buffer. The performance of P wave and R wave detection is evaluated by using 119 data record of MIT-BIH arrhythmia database. The achieved scores indicate P wave detection rate of 97.91%, R wave detection rate of 96.66% and P wave detection rate of 99.01%, R wave detection rate of 97.93% accuracy respectively for Notch filter and proposed subtraction method.

  • This study proposes an articulated robot control system using an on/off-line robot graphic simulator with multiple networks. The proposed robot control system consists of a robot simulator using OpenGL, a robot controller based on a DSP(TMS320) motion board, and the server/client communication by multiple networks. Each client can control the real robot through a server and can compare the real robot motion with the virtual robot motion in the simulation. Also, all clients can check and analyze the robot motion simultaneously through the motion image and data of the real robot. In order to show the validity of the presented system, we present an experimental result for a 6-axis vertical articulated robot. The proposed robot control system is useful, especially, in the industrial fields using remote robot control as well as industrial production automation with many clients.

  • In order to increase productivity of an assembly system composed of multiple robots along a conveyer line, an efficient sequence planning is necessary because the assembly time is dependent upon the assembly sequence. In this paper, a two-robot assembly system is considered in which two robots operate simultaneously and transfer parts from the part feeders to the workpiece on the conveyer one by one. In this case, the distance from the feeder to the workpiece varies with time because the workpiece moves at a constant speed on the conveyer. Hence, the sequence programming is not a trivial problem. Also, the two robots may interfere with each other kinematically and dynamically due to the simultaneous operation, so the sequence should be programmed to avoid the interferences. In this paper, the task sequence optimization problem is formulated and is solved by employing the simulated annealing which has been shown to be effective for solving large combinatorial optimizations.

  • Release planning in a software product line (SPL) is to select and assign the features of the multiple software products in the SPL in sequence of releases along a specified planning horizon satisfying the numerous constraints regarding technical precedence, conflicting priorities for features, and available resources. A greedy genetic algorithm is designed to solve the problems of release planning in SPL which is formulated as a precedence-constrained multiple 0-1 knapsack problem. To be guaranteed to obtain feasible solutions after the crossover and mutation operation, a greedy-like heuristic is developed as a repair operator and reflected into the genetic algorithm. The performance of the proposed solution methodology in this research is tested using a fractional factorial experimental design as well as compared with the performance of a genetic algorithm developed for the software release planning. The comparison shows that the solution approach proposed in this research yields better result than the genetic algorithm.
