Finite element analysis is performed on the subsurface crack propagation in brittle materials due to sliding contact. The sliding contact is simulated by a rigid asperity moving across the surface of an elastic half-surface containing single and multiple cracks. The single crack, coplanar cracks and parallel cracks are modeled to investigate the interaction effects on the crack growth in contact fatigue. The crack location is fixed and the friction coefficients between asperity and half-space are varied to analyze the effect of surface friction on stress intensity factor for horizontal cracks. The crack propagation direction is predicted based on the maximum range of shear and tensile stress intensity factors. With a coplanar crack, the stress intensity factor was increased. However, with a parallel crack, the stress intensity factor was decreased. These results indicate that the interaction of a coplanar crack increases fatigue crack propagation, whereas that of a parallel crack decreases it.

In this study, fatigue crack propagation problem of plate under multi-axial loading is mainly considered To analyze this special problem, recently developed technique called EFGM(Element-Free Galerkin Method), one of the Meshfree Methods, and general fatigue crack growth raw herein Paris law are used Using the Implemented scheme, paths of fatigue cracks by constant-amplitude load fluctuation and multiple-crack growth behavior are examined. The failure mechanism of steel plate due to crack propagation is studied. As a result, an algorithm that treats multiple fatigue crack problems is proposed. A numerical example shows that the prediction of growing paths can be achieved successfully and efficiently by proposed algorithm.
The elastic-plastic fracture toughness($J_{IC}$) and fracture resistance (J-R curve) of SA508-3 alloy steel used for nuclear reactor pressure vessel are investigated by using CT-type specimens. Fracture toughness tests are conducted by unloading compliance method and multiple specimen method at room temperature, -2$0^{\circ}C$ and 20$0^{\circ}C$. The apparent negative crack growth phenomenon which usually arises in partial unloading compliance test is well known. The negative crack growth phenomenon in determining J sub(IC) or J-R cure from partial unloading compliance experiments may be eliminated by the offset technique. In this study, the evaluation of $J_{IC}$ multiple specimen method recommended by the JSME gives the most reliable results by using half-size CT(similar-type) specimens.

Nickel base Alloy X-750, which is used as fastener parts in light-water reactor (LWR), has experienced many failures by environmentally assisted cracking (EAC). In order to improve the reliability of passive components for nuclear power plants (NPP's), it is necessary to study the failure mechanism and to predict crack growth behavior by developing a probabilistic failure model. In this study, The Bayesian inference was employed to reduce the uncertainties contained in EAC modeling parameters that have been established from experiments with Alloy X-750. Corrosion fatigue crack growth rate model (FCGR) was developed by fitting into Paris' Law of measured data from the several fatigue tests conducted either in constant load or constant ΔK mode. These parameters characterizing the corrosion fatigue crack growth behavior of X-750 were successfully updated to reduce the uncertainty in the model by using the Bayesian inference method. It is demonstrated that probabilistic failure models for passive components can be developed by updating a laboratory model with field-inspection data, when crack growth rates (CGRs) are low and multiple inspections can be made prior to the component failure.

A linear elastic fracture mechanics analysis of multiful subsurface cracks propagation in a half-space subjected to moving thermomechanical surface traction was peformed using the finite element method. The effect of frictional heat at the sliding surface on the crack growth behavior is analyzed in terms of the thermal load and peclet number. The crack propagation direction is predicted in light of the magnitudes of the maximum shear and tensile stress intensity factor ranges. When moving thermomechanical surface traction exists, subsurface horizontal cracks are propagation in-plane crack growth rate at the beginning but they are propagation out-of-plane crack growth rate by the frictional heat which is occurrence by the repeated sliding contact.
A finite element analysis of crack propagation in a half-space due to sliding contact was performed. The sliding contact was simulated by a rigid asperity moving across the surface of an elastic half-surface containing single and multiple cracks. Single, coplanar, and parallel cracks were modeled to investigate the interaction effects on the crack growth in contact fatigue. The analysis was based on linear elastic fracture mechanics and the stress intensity factor concept. The crack propagation direction was predicted based on the maximum range of the shear and tensile stress intensity factors.
Fatigue cracked components often needs to be repaired during service. Standard repair schemes involve strengthening the component by connecting reinforcing members by means of rivets or welding by reducing the crack-tip stress intensity factors. Recent technological advances in fiber reinforced composite materials and adhesive bonding have led to the development of efficient repair schemes. In this study, the influence of various shape parameters on fatigue crack growth in the CCT type uniform thickness plates and the thin-ta-thick type stiffened panels repaired with woven fabric type Kevlar-Epoxy composite patch are studied experimentally.

Fatigue crack growth and life is estimated by various fracture mechanical parameters but affected by load, material and environment. Fatigue character of component without surface notch cannot be e valuated by above-mentioned parameters due to microstructure of in-service material. Single fracture mechanical parameter or nondestructive parameter cannot predict fatigue damage in arbitrary boundary condition but multiple fracture mechanical parameters or nondestructive parameters can Fatigue crack growth modelling with three point representation scheme uses this merit but has limit on real-time monitoring. Therefore, this study shows fatigue damage model using backpropagatior. neural networks on the basis of X-ray half breadth ratio B/$B_o$ fractal dimension $D_f$ and fracture mechanical parameters can predict fatigue crack growth rate da/dN and cycle ratioN/$N_f$ at the same time within engineering estimated mean error(5%).

The butt lap joint structures which are usually designed by the concept of slow crack growth damage tolerance, show frequently the behaviors of multiple site fatigue crack growth around the fastener hole edges due to the fretting between the two jointed parts. In this paper, experimental tests of fatigue crack growth have been performed of a bolted butt lap joint structure having an initial corner crack at the fastener hole edge, with different fretting conditions under a flight load spectrum. The obtained test results were reviewed to investigate the effects of fretting fatigue cracks on the damage tolerance crack growth life. Computations of corner crack growth were also carried out using an existed model to compare with test results.

Fatigue crack growth and life have been estimated based on established empirical equations. In this paper, an alternative method using artificial neural network (ANN) -based model developed to predict fatigue damages simultaneously. To learn and generalize the ANN, fatigue crack growth rate and life data were built up using in-plane bending fatigue test results. Single fracture mechanical parameter or nondestructive parameter can't predict fatigue damage accurately but multiple fracture mechanical parameters or nondestructive parameters can. Existing fatigue damage modeling used this merit but limited real-time damage monitoring. Therefore, this study shows fatigue damage model using backpropagation neural networks on the basis of X -ray half breadth ratio B / $B_o$, fractal dimension $D_f$ and fracture mechanical parameters can estimate fatigue crack growth rate da/ dN and cycle ratio N / $N_f$ at the same time within engineering limit error ($5\%$).
