  • Surface plasmon resonance(SPR) has been widely studied for biological and chemical sensing applications. The present study conducts numerical simulation for the single and bimetallic layer SPR configurations by using the multiple beam interference matrix(MBIM) method to investigate the influence of wave interference and complex refractive indices of materials on optical characteristics such as reflectance and optical phase shift which are used for sensing. First, calculated reflectances are compared with experimental data for validation. In addition, in the single film structures this study finds out the appropriate film thicknesses with minimum reflectance for cases of gold film and silver film. For a bimetallic silver-gold film structure, in particular, the bimetallic film thicknesses that has the minimum reflectance are found 36 nm for silver and 5 nm for gold. From the results, the use of phase shift would be useful compared to reflectance in determining the SPR configuration because the phase shift becomes more sensitive than reflectance.

  • Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) has been widely used for biological and chemical sensing applications. The present study investigates numerically the optical characteristics for the single Au film and bimetallic Ag/Au film SPR configurations by using the multiple beam interference matrix (MBIM) method. We use the prism coupling method, especially Kretschmann configuration for excitation of surface plasmon wave (SPW). The estimated results of reflectance, phase shift and magnetic field intensity enhancement factor are provided for finding out the optimum configuration with high sensitivity for SPR measurement. As a result, the optimum thicknesses are found to be 52 nm for a single Au film and 5 nm to 36 nm for bimetallic Ag-Au film. From the comparison of full width half maximum (FWHM) values for reflectance, phase shift, and enhancement of magnetic field intensity, it is concluded that the highest sensitivity can be obtained when using the phase shift for SPR sensor.

  • In the multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, orthogonal random beamforming (ORBF) scheme is proposed to serve multiple users simultaneously in order to achieve the multi-user diversity gain. The opportunistic space-division multiple access system (OSDMA-S) scheme performs multiple weighting matrices during the training phase and chooses the best weighting matrix to be used to broadcast data during the transmitting phase. The OSDMA-S scheme works better than the original ORBF by decreasing the inter-user interference during the transmitting phase. To save more time in the training phase, a partly random multiple weighting matrices selection scheme is proposed in this paper. In our proposed scheme, the Base Station does not need to use several unitary matrices to broadcast pilot symbol. Actually, only one broadcasting operation is needed. Each subscriber generates several virtual equivalent channels with a set of pre-saved unitary matrices and the channel status information gained from the broadcasting operation. The signal-to-interference and noise ratio (SINR) of each beam in each virtual equivalent channel is calculated and fed back to the base station for the weighting matrix selection and multi-user scheduling. According to the theoretical analysis, the proposed scheme relatively expands the transmitting phase and reduces the interactive complexity between the Base Station and subscribers. The asymptotic analysis and the simulation results show that the proposed scheme improves the throughput performance of the multi-user MIMO system.

  • In this paper, we propose a new algorithm for the performance analysis of the sidelobe blanker (SLB) in radar system, which is based on the matrix pencil method (MPM). In general, the SLB in radar is composed of the main antenna, the auxiliary antenna, and the processing unit. The auxiliary antenna with wide beamwidth receives interference signals such as jamming or clutter signals. The main antenna with high gain receives the target signal in the main beam and the interference signals in the sidelobe. In this paper the Swerling model is used as the target echo signal by considering a probabilistic radar cross section (RCS) of the target. To estimate the SLB performance it needs to calculate the probability of target detection and the probability of blanking the interference by using the signals received from the main and auxiliary antennas. The detection probability and the blanking probability include multiple summations of infinite series with infinite integrations, of which convergence rate is very slow. Increase of summation range to improve the calculation accuracy may lead to an overflow error in computer simulations. In this paper, to resolve the above problems, we used the MPM to calculate a summation of infinite series and improved the calculation accuracy and the convergence rate.

  • A novel method of adaptive beam forming is presented in this paper. The proposed technique provides for a suboptimal beam pattern that increases the Signal to Noise/Interference Ratio (SNR/SIR), thus, eventually increases the capacity of the communication channel, under an assumption that the desired signal is dominant compared to each component of interferences at the receiver, which is precoditionally achieved in Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) mobile communications by the chip correlator. The main advantages of the new technique are:(1)The procedure requires neither reference signals nor training period, (2)The signal interchoerency does not affect the performance or complexity of the entire procedure, (3)The number of antennas does not have to be greater than that of the signals of distinct arrival angles, (4)The entire procedure is iterative such that a new suboptimal beam pattern be generated upon the arrival of each new data of which the arrival angle keeps changing due tot he mobility of the signal source, (5)The total amount of computation is tremendously reduced compared to that of most conventional beam forming techniques such that the suboptimal beam pattern be produced at vevery snapshot on a real-time basis. The total computational load for generating a new set of weitht including the update of an N-by-N(N is the number of antenna elements) autocovariance matrix is $0(3N^2 + 12N)$. It can further be reduced down to O(11N) by approximating the matrix with the instantaneous signal vector.
