  • MIMO(Multi-Input Multi-Output) radar is an emerging radar technology for its numerous advantages. However, in the electric warfare viewpoint, MIMO radar is a new developed radar technology for that existing parameter estimation cannot applied and a new radar parameter estimation based on the characteristics of MIMO radar is desired. In this paper, we propose a blind estimation scheme for the number of orthogonal waveforms of a uniform linear array(ULA) MIMO radar using minimum two electronic sensors.

  • Modern Radars are evolving into MFRs which can search multiple targets simultaneously and then track them. Additionally they should be able to avoid some external jamming signals. Applying to these MFRs, Antennas should be able to perform DBF including to not only real-time beam steering but also multi-beam forming simultaneously. And they can cancel the beam at the specific direction. In this paper, we describe the implementation of sub-array type antenna hardware which can be applying DBF. Also we propose the modified amplitude aperture distribution for suppressing the side lobe level and explain the sub-array receiver design with amplitude tapering. It consists in making the amplitude weighting in 2 steps. In order to compare two weighting cases, we investigate the G/T performance for the array antenna. At the conclusion, we make a comparative study for the dynamic range of every sub-array receiver and present the hardware implementation that is more advantageous for sub-array alignment and calibration in DBF.

  • AESA radar is able to instantaneously and adaptively position and control the beam, and this enables to greatly improve multi-target tracking capability with high accuracy in comparison to traditional mechanically-scanned radar system. This paper is primarily concerned with the development of an efficient methodology for multi-target managenent with the context of multi-target environment employing AESA radar. In this paper, targets are stratified into two principal categories: currently displayed targets and non-display targets, predicated upon their relative priority. Displayed targets are subsequently stratified into TOI (target of interest), HPT (high priority target), and SAT (situational awareness target), based on the requisite levels of tracking accuracy. It also suggests rules for determining target priority management, especially in air-to-air mode including interleaved mode. This proposed approach was tested and validated in a SIL (system integration lab) environment, applying it to AESA radars mounted on aircraft.

  • Recent surveillance systems employ multiple sensors, such as cameras and radars, to enhance the accuracy of intrusion detection. However, object recognition through camera (RGB, Thermal) sensors may not always be accurate during nighttime, in adverse weather conditions, or when the intruder is camouflaged. In such situations, it is possible to detect intruders by utilizing the trajectories of objects extracted from camera or radar sensors. This paper proposes a method to detect intruders using only trajectory information in environments where object recognition is challenging. The proposed method involves training an LSTM-Attention based trajectory classification model using normal and abnormal (intrusion, loitering) trajectory data of animals and humans. This model is then used to identify abnormal human trajectories and perform intrusion detection. Finally, the validity of the proposed method is demonstrated through experiments using real data.

  • An electronic attack (EA) system is an essential weapon system for performing electronic warfare missions that contain signal tracking and jamming against multiple threats using electromagnetic waves, such as air defense radars, wireless command and communication networks, and guided missiles. The combat effectiveness can be maximized, and the survivability of militarily protecting combat power can be enhanced through EA mission operations, such as disabling the functions of multiple threats. The EA system can be used as a radio frequency jamming system to respond to drone attacks on the core infrastructure, such as airports, power plants, and communication broadcasting systems, in the civilian field. This study examined the criteria for classification according to the electronic attack missions of foreign EA systems based on an aviation platform. The foreign R&D trends by those criteria were investigated. Moreover, by analyzing the R&D trends of domestic EA systems and future battlefields in the domestic security environments, this paper proposes technological development plans of EA systems suitable for the future battlefield environments compared to the foreign R&D trends.

  • Space-borne Earth observation technique is one of the most cost effective and rapidly advancing Earth science research tools today and the potential field and micro-wave radar applications have been leading the discipline. The traditional optical imaging systems including the well known Landsat, NOAA - AVHRR, SPOT, and IKONOS have steadily improved spatial imaging resolution but increasing cloud covers have the major deterrent. The new Earth observation satellites ENVISAT (launched on March 1 2002, specifically for Earth environment observation), ALOS (planned for launching in 2004 - 2005 period and ALOS stands for Advanced Land Observation Satellite), and RADARSAT-II (planned for launching in 2005) all have synthetic aperture radar (SAR) onboard, which all have partial or fully polarimetric imaging capabilities. These new types of polarimetric imaging radars with repeat orbit interferometric capabilities are opening up completely new possibilities in Earth system science research, in addition to the radar altimeter and scatterometer. The main advantage of a SAR system is the all weather imaging capability without Sun light and the newly developed interferometric capabilities, utilizing the phase information in SAR data further extends the observation capabilities of directional surface covers and neotectonic surface displacements. In addition, if one can utilize the newly available multiple frequency polarimetric information, the new generation of space-borne SAR systems is the future research tool for Earth observation and global environmental change monitoring. The potential field strength decreases as a function of the inverse square of the distance between the source and the observation point and geophysicists have traditionally been reluctant to make the potential field observation from any space-borne platforms. However, there have recently been a number of potential field missions such as ASTRID-2, Orsted, CHAMP, GRACE, GOCE. Of course these satellite sensors are most effective for low spatial resolution applications. For similar objects, AMPERE and NPOESS are being planned by the United States and France. The Earth science disciplines which utilize space-borne platforms most are the astronomy and atmospheric science. However in this talk we will focus our discussion on the solid Earth and physical oceanographic applications. The geodynamic applications actively being investigated from various space-borne platforms geological mapping, earthquake and volcano .elated tectonic deformation, generation of p.ecise digital elevation model (DEM), development of multi-temporal differential cross-track SAR interferometry, sea surface wind measurement, tidal flat geomorphology, sea surface wave dynamics, internal waves and high latitude cryogenics including sea ice problems.

  • This paper introduces core techniques on ship detection and tracking based on a compact HF radar platform which is necessary to establish a wide-area surveillance network. Currently, most HF radar sites are primarily optimized for observing sea surface radial velocities and bearings. Therefore, many ship detection systems are vulnerable to error sources such as environmental noise and clutter when they are applied to these practical surface current observation purpose systems. In addition, due to Korea's geographical features, only compact HF radars which generates non-uniform antenna response and has no information on target information are applicable. The ship detection and tracking techniques discussed in this paper considers these practical conditions and were evaluated by real data collected from the Yellow Sea, Korea. The proposed method is composed of two parts. In the first part, ship detection, a constant false alarm rate based detector was applied and was enhanced by a PCA subspace decomposition method which reduces noise. To merge multiple detections originated from a single target due to the Doppler effect during long CPIs, a clustering method was applied. Finally, data association framework eliminates false detections by considering ship maneuvering over time. According to evaluation results, it is claimed that the proposed method produces satisfactory results within certain ranges.

  • This paper proposes a method to improve the detectable distance by reducing noise to perform a signal processing technique on the received signals. To increase the radar detection range, the noise component of the received signal has to be reduced. The proposed method reduces the noise component by employing two methods. First, the radar signals received with multiple pulses are accumulated. As the number of additions increases, the noise component gradually decreases due to noise randomness. On the other hand, the signal term gradually increases and thus signal to noise ratio increases. Secondly, after converting the accumulated signal into the frequency spectrum, a Least Mean Square (LMS) filter is applied. In the case of the radar received signal, desired signal exists in a specific part and most of the rest is a noise. Therefore, if the LMS filter is applied in the time domain, the noise increases. To prevent this, the LMS filter is applied after converting the received signal into the entire frequency spectrum. The LMS filter output is then transformed into the time domain and then range estimation algorithm is performed. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme reduces the noise component by about 25 dB. The experiment was conducted by comparing the proposed results with the conventional results of the radars held by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute for the international space station.

  • Among the methods of precipitation data acquisition, a rain gauge station has a distinctive advantage of direct measurement of rainfall itself, but multiple stations should be installed in order to obtain areal precipitation data required for hydrological analysis. On the other hand, a rainfall radar may provide areal distribution of rainfall in real time though it is an indirect measurement of radar echoes on rain drops. Rainfall radars have been shown useful especially for forecasting short-term localized torrential storms that may cause catastrophic flash floods. CAPPI (Constant Altitude Plan Position Indicator), which is one of the several types of radar rainfall image data, has been provided on the Internet in real time by Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). It is one of the most widely available rainfall data in Korea with fairly high level of confidence as it is produced with bias adjustment and quality control procedures by KMA. The objective of this study is to develop an improved way to extract quantitative rainfall data applicable to even very small watersheds from CAPPI using CIVCOM, which is a new image processing method based on a vector-based scheme proposed in this study rather than raster-based schemes proposed by other researchers. This study shows usefulness of CIVCOM through comparison of rainfall data produced by image processing methods including traditional raster-based schemes and a newly proposed vector-based one.
