  • Appropriation is essential for innovators to succeed. Traditionally, among various appropriation mechanisms, patents and secrecy have received attention, and the differential role of patents has been highlighted according to different industries or sectors. These discussions give a rough idea, however, and do not yield concrete directives for strategies in the context of innovation management. This paper describes an analysis of the effect of a firm's position within the value chain and the objectives of innovative activities with appropriation mechanisms. Multivariate analysis of diverse appropriation mechanisms using Korean innovation survey data revealed a specific combination of mechanisms and significant determinants in the context of objectives of innovative activities.

  • Most of solution methods in scheduling attempt to generate good solutions by either developing algorithms or heuristic rules. However, scheduling problems in the real world require considering more factors such as multiple objectives, different combinations of heuristic rules due to problem characteristics. In this respect, the traditional mathematical a, pp.oach showed limited performance so that new a, pp.oaches need to be developed. Expert system is one of them. When an expert system is developed for scheduling one of the most difficult processes faced could be knowledge acquisition on scheduling heuristics. In this paper we propose a method for the acquisition of knowledge on the selection of scheduling heuristics using Dempster-Shafer Theory(DST). We also show the examples in the multi-objectives environment.

  • Eisner emphasized the importance of problem-solving objectives and expressive objectives in addition to behavioral objectives, and communication through multiple modalities including linguistic, visual, aural, spatial, gestural modes. This study analyzes 'Libraries and Information Life,' a textbook developed for information literacy instruction, by dividing it into educational objectives types(behavioral, problem-solving, expressive) and multimodal modes(linguistic, visual, auditory, spatial, and gestural), and seeks to derive implications for setting educational objectives for information literacy instruction and developing textbooks. The textbook has four volumes for elementary low-grade, elementary high-grade, middle school, and high school levels. Educational objectives were extracted from the textbooks, and 3 librarian-teachers were engaged in the analysis of these objectives. The main findings and implications of this study are as follows. First, when looking at the types of educational objectives, the proportion of behavioral objectives was found to be excessively high, and there is a need to strengthen the proportion of problem-solving objectives and expressive objectives. Second, problem-solving objectives tend to overlap with behavioral objectives, indicating a need to develop problem-solving objectives with defined conditions and solution requirements. Third, expressive objectives concentrated in specific units need to be placed evenly in other units. Fourth, in the case of multi-modality mode, the proportion of the linguistic mode must be reduced, the proportion of the visual, auditory, spatial, and gestural modes must be increased, and it is necessary to set educational objectives with clear characteristics of each mode.

  • The preventive medicine learning objectives, first developed in 1977 and subsequently supplemented, underwent necessary revision of the contents for the fourth time to create the fifth revision. However, the required educational contents of health promotion and disease prevention have been changed by the new trends of medical education such as PBL and integrated curriculum, the rapid change of the health and medical environment and the globalization of medicine. The Korean Society of Preventive Medicine formed a task force, led by the Undergraduate Education Committee in 2003, which surveyed all the medical colleges to describe the state of preventive medicine education in Korea, analyzed the changing education demand according to the change of health environment and quantitatively measured the validity and usefulness of each learning objective in the previous curriculum. Based on these data, some temporary objectives were formed and promulgated to all the medical schools. After multiple revisions, an almost completely new series of learning objectives for preventive medicine was created. The objectives comprised 4 classifications and 1 supplement: 1) health and disease, 2) epidemiology and its application, 3) environment and health, 4) patient-doctor-society, and supplementary clinical occupational health. The total number of learning objectives, contained within 13 sub-classifications, was 221 (including 35 of supplementary clinical occupational health). Future studies of the learning process and ongoing development of teaching materials according to the new learning objectives should be undertaken with persistence in order to ensure the progress of preventive medicine education.

  • In this paper, a new green clustering algorithm is proposed to be as a first approach in the framework of an energy efficient strategy for centralized enterprise high-density WLANs. Traditionally, in order to maintain the network coverage, all the APs within the WLAN have to be powered-on. Nevertheless, the new algorithm can power-off a large proportion of APs while the coverage is maintained as its always-on counterpart. The two main components of the new approach are the faster procedure based on K-means and the more accurate procedure based on Evolutionary Algorithm (EA), respectively. The two procedures are processes in parallel for different designed requirements and there is information interaction in between. In order to implement the new algorithm, EA is applied to handle the optimization of multiple objectives. Moreover, we adapt the method for selection and recombination, and then introduce a new operator for mutation. This paper also presents simulations in scenarios modeled with ray-tracing method and FDTD technique, and the results show that about 67% to 90% of energy consumption can be saved while it is able to maintain the original network coverage during periods when few users are online or the traffic load is low.

  • We consider a multi-objective balancing and sequencing problem in mixed model assembly lines, which is important for an efficient use of the assembly lines. In this paper, we present a neighborhood symbiotic evolutionary algorithm to simultaneously solve the two problems of balancing and model sequencing under multiple objectives. We aim to find a set of well-distributed solutions close to the true Pareto optimal solutions for decision makers. The proposed algorithm has a two-leveled structure. At Level 1, two populations are operated : One consists of individuals each of which represents a partial solution to the balancing problem and the other consists of individuals for the sequencing problem. Level 2, which is an upper level, works one population whose individuals represent the combined entire solutions to the two problems. The process of Level 1 imitates a neighborhood symbiotic evolution and that of Level 2 simulates an endosymbiotic evolution together with an elitist strategy to promote the capability of solution search. The performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with those of the existing algorithms in convergence, diversity and computation time of nondominated solutions. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is superior to the compared algorithms in all the three performance measures.

  • This study examined the expenditure on time-saving services and related variables. The time-saving services are food away from home, delivery food, dry cleaning, clothing care, helper and total service. The specific objectives of this study were: (1) to investigate the differences in the expenditure on time saving services according to social economic and demographic variables. (2) to investigate the differences in the expenditure on time-saving services according to role-overload, home goal orientation and work goal orientation. (3) to investigate the independent influence of variables related to the expenditure on time-saving services. For this objectives survey was conducted using interview. The data used in this study included 160 women living in Seoul from employed professional housewives, employed non-professional housewives and non-employed housewives. Statistical analyses were conducted using frequencies, percentiles, mean, oneway ANOVA, DUNCAN-test and multiple regression. The major findings were: (1) Wife's education, wife's age, income, tenure, level of living and employment status were significantly related to the expenditure on time-saving services by using the one-way ANOVA. (2) Income, education, level of living, number of children, and employment status explained the variance of the expenditures on time-saving services about 20%-39% by using a multiple regression method.

  • This paper considers the hybrid flow shop scheduling problem for the objective of minimizing the number of tardy jobs. In hybrid flow shops, each job is processed through multiple production stages in series, each of which has multiple identical parallel machines. The problem is to determine the allocation of jobs to the parallel machines at each stage as well as the sequence of the jobs assigned to each machine. Due to the complexity of the problem, we suggest search heuristics, tabu search and simulated annealing algorithms with a new method to generate neighborhood solutions. In particular, to evaluate and select neighborhood solutions, three surrogate objectives are additionally suggested because not much difference in the number of tardy jobs can be found among the neighborhoods. To test the performances of the surrogate objective based search heuristics, computational experiments were performed on a number of test instances and the results show that the surrogate objective based search heuristics were better than the original ones. Also, they gave the optimal solutions for most small-size test instances.
