  • Subcellular localization is a key functional char acteristic of proteins. With the number of sequences entering databanks rapidly increasing, the importance of developing a powerful tool to identify protein subcellular location has become self-evident. In this paper, we introduce a novel method for predic ting protein subcellular locations from protein sequences. The main idea was motivated from the observation that amino acid pair composition data is redundant. By classifying from multiple feature subsets and using many kinds of amino acid pair composition s, we forced the classifiers to make uncorrelated errors. Therefore when we combined the predictors using a voting scheme, the prediction accuracy c ould be improved. Experiment was conducted on several data sets and significant improvement has been achieve d in a jackknife test.

  • While biometric authentication system has been in general use, research is ongoing to apply biometric data to public key infrastructure. It is a significant task to generate a cryptographic key from biometrics in setting up a public key of Bio-PKI. Methods for generating the key by quantization of feature vector can cause data loss and degrade the performance of key extraction. In this paper, we suggest a new method for generating a cryptographic key from classification results of biometric data using multiple classifying models. Our proposal does not cause data loss of feature vector so it showed better performance in key extraction. Also, it uses the multiple models to generate key blocks which produce sufficient length of the key.

  • Object detection and tracking is the basic capability of mobile robots to achieve natural human-robot interaction. In this paper, an object tracking system of mobile robot is designed and validated using improved multiple instance learning algorithm. The improved multiple instance learning algorithm which prevents model drift significantly. Secondly, in order to improve the capability of classifiers, an active sample selection strategy is proposed by optimizing a bag Fisher information function instead of the bag likelihood function, which dynamically chooses most discriminative samples for classifier training. Furthermore, we integrate the co-training criterion into algorithm to update the appearance model accurately and avoid error accumulation. Finally, we evaluate our system on challenging sequences and an indoor environment in a laboratory. And the experiment results demonstrate that the proposed methods can stably and robustly track moving object.

  • This paper presents a novel hybrid classifier for face recognition with artificially generated virtual training samples. We utilize both the nearest neighbor approach in feature angle space and a connectionist model to obtain a synergy effect by combining the results of two heterogeneous classifiers. First, a classifier called the nearest feature angle (NFA), based on angular information, finds the most similar feature to the query from a given training set. Second, a classifier has been developed based on the recall of stored frontal projection of the query feature. It uses a frontal recall network (FRN) that finds the most similar frontal one among the stored frontal feature set. For FRN, we used an ensemble neural network consisting of multiple multiplayer perceptrons (MLPs), each of which is trained independently to enhance generalization capability. Further, both classifiers used the virtual training set generated adaptively, according to the spatial distribution of each person's training samples. Finally, the results of the two classifiers are combined to comprise the best matching class, and a corresponding similarit measure is used to make the final decision. The proposed classifier achieved an average classification rate of 96.33% against a large group of different test sets of images, and its average error rate is 61.5% that of the nearest feature line (NFL) method, and achieves a more robust classification performance.

  • In this paper, we propose a multiple classifier combination method based on image degradation modeling to improve recognition performance on low-quality images. Using an image degradation model, it generates a set of classifiers each of which is specialized for a specific image quality. In recognition, it combines the results of the recognizers by weighted averaging to decide the final result. At this time, the weight of each recognizer is dynamically decided from the estimated quality of the input image. It assigns large weight to the recognizer specialized to the estimated quality of the input image, but small weight to other recognizers. As the result, it can effectively adapt to image quality variation. Moreover, being a multiple-classifier system, it shows more reliable performance then the single-classifier system on low-quality images. In the experiment, the proposed multiple-classifier combination method achieved higher recognition rate than multiple-classifier combination systems not considering the image quality or single classifier systems considering the image quality.

  • It is difficult to find an appropriate web site because exponentially growing web contains millions of web documents. Personalization of web search can be realized by recommending proper web sites using user profile but more efficient method is needed for estimating preference because user's evaluation on web contents presents many aspects of his characteristics. As user profile has a property of non-linearity, estimation by classifier is needed and combination of classifiers is necessary to anticipate diverse properties. Structure adaptive self-organizing map (SASOM) that is suitable for Pattern classification and visualization is an enhanced model of SOM and might be useful for web mining. Fuzzy integral is a combination method using classifiers' relevance that is defined subjectively. In this paper, estimation of user profile is conducted by using ensemble of SASOM's teamed independently based on fuzzy integral and evaluated by Syskill & Webert UCI benchmark data. Experimental results show that the proposed method performs better than previous naive Bayes classifier as well as voting of SASOM's.

  • Combining multiple classifiers has been actively exploited to improve classification performance. It is required to construct a pool of accurate and diverse base classifier for obtaining a good ensemble classifier. Conventionally ensemble learning techniques such as bagging and boosting have been used and the diversify of base classifiers for the training set has been estimated, but there are some limitations in classifying gene expression profiles since only a few training samples are available. This paper proposes an ensemble technique that analyzes the diversity of classification rules obtained by genetic programming. Genetic programming generates interpretable rules, and a sample is classified by combining the most diverse set of rules. We have applied the proposed method to cancer classification with gene expression profiles. Experiments on lymphoma cancer dataset, prostate cancer dataset and ovarian cancer dataset have illustrated the usefulness of the proposed method. h higher classification accuracy has been obtained with the proposed method than without considering diversity. It has been also confirmed that the diversity increases classification performance.

  • Adaboost is well known for a representative learner as one of the kernel methods. Adaboost which is based on the statistical learning theory shows good generalization performance and has been applied to various pattern recognition problems. However, Adaboost is basically to deal with a two-class classification problem, so we cannot solve directly a multi-class problem with Adaboost. One-Vs-All and Pair-Wise have been applied to solve the multi-class classification problem, which is one of the multi-class problems. The two methods above are ones of the output coding methods, a general approach for solving multi-class problem with multiple binary classifiers, which decomposes a complex multi-class problem into a set of binary problems and then reconstructs the outputs of binary classifiers for each binary problem. However, two methods cannot show good performance. In this paper, we propose the method to solve a multi-target classification problem by using radial basis function of Adaboost weak classifier.

  • We propose a novel eye tracking method that can estimate 3D world coordinates using an infrared (IR) stereo camera for indoor and outdoor environments. This method first detects dark evidences such as eyes, eyebrows and mouths by fast multi-level thresholding. Among these evidences, eye pair evidences are detected by evidential reasoning and geometrical rules. For robust accuracy, two classifiers based on multiple layer perceptron (MLP) using gradient local binary patterns (GLBPs) verify whether the detected evidences are real eye pairs or not. Finally, the 3D world coordinates of detected eyes are calculated by region-based stereo matching. Compared with other eye detection methods, the proposed method can detect the eyes of people wearing sunglasses due to the use of the IR spectrum. Especially, when people are in dark environments such as driving at nighttime, driving in an indoor carpark, or passing through a tunnel, human eyes can be robustly detected because we use active IR illuminators. In the experimental results, it is shown that the proposed method can detect eye pairs with high performance in real-time under variable illumination conditions. Therefore, the proposed method can contribute to human-computer interactions (HCIs) and intelligent transportation systems (ITSs) applications such as gaze tracking, windshield head-up display and drowsiness detection.

  • Hajj is a fundamental pillar of Islam that all Muslims must perform at least once in their lives. However, Umrah can be performed several times yearly, depending on people's abilities. Every year, Muslims from all over the world travel to Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj. Hajj and Umrah pilgrims face multiple issues due to the large volume of people at the same time and place during the event. Therefore, a system is needed to facilitate the people's smooth execution of Hajj and Umrah procedures. Multiple devices are already installed in Makkah, but it would be better to suggest the data architectures with the help of machine learning approaches. The proposed system analyzes the services provided to the pilgrims regarding gender, location, and foreign pilgrims. The proposed system addressed the research problem of analyzing the Hajj pilgrim dataset most effectively. In addition, Visualizations of the proposed method showed the system's performance using data architectures. Machine learning algorithms classify whether male pilgrims are more significant than female pilgrims. Several algorithms were proposed to classify the data, including logistic regression, Naive Bayes, K-nearest neighbors, decision trees, random forests, and XGBoost. The decision tree accuracy value was 62.83%, whereas K-nearest Neighbors had 62.86%; other classifiers have lower accuracy than these. The open-source dataset was analyzed using different data architectures to store the data, and then machine learning approaches were used to classify the dataset.
