  • A number of automotive electronics-safety, driver assistance, and infotainment devices-have been deployed in recent vehicles. This raises new challenges regarding in-vehicular network arbitration. A performance analysis of non-destructive arbitration has revealed a fairness issue. The arbitration prioritizes without collisions, despite multiple simultaneous transmissions; however, the performances of the highest priority node and the lowest priority node are very different. In this paper, an ID-rotation arbitration method to solve the arbitration-fairness problem is proposed. The proposed algorithm was applied to several engine control units (ECUs), including a controller area network (CAN) controller. Experimental results showed that the algorithm improved the fairness as well as the total throughput within a specific performance constraint.

  • The trend of Next Generation Networks' (NGN) evolution is towards providing multiple and multimedia services to users through ubiquitous networks. The aim of IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is to integrate mobile communication networks and computer networks. The IMS plays an important role in NGN services, which can be achieved by heterogeneous networks and different access technologies. IMS can be used to manage all service related issues such as Quality of Service (QoS), Charging, Access Control, User and Services Management. Nowadays, internet technology is changing with each passing day. New technologies yield new impact to IMS. In this paper, we perform a survey of IMS and discuss the different impacts of new technologies on IMS such as P2P, SCIM, Web Service and its security issues.

  • Advances in sensors, actuators, and computers and developments In information systems offer unprecedented opportunities to implement highly ambitious automation, control and decision strategies. There are also new challenges and demands for control and automation in modern industrial practices. There is a growing need for an active participation from the information systems in industrial, manufacturing and process industry environments because currently there are many control problems. This paper provides pattern recognition to the monitoring system for solvent manufacturing process and shows performance in real-time response with multiple input signals. Data is teamed by a multilayer feedforward network trained by error-backpropagation. The two kinds of test results show that the trained network has the ability to show the current system status with different input data sets.

  • The recent advent of next-generation sequencing technologies has dramatically changed the nature of biomedical research. Human genetics is no exception-it has never been easier to interrogate human patient genomes at the nucleotide level to identify disease-associated variants. To further facilitate the efficiency of this approach, whole exome sequencing (WES) was first developed in 2009. Over the past three years, multiple groups have demonstrated the power of WES through robust disease-associated variant discoveries across a diverse spectrum of human diseases. Here, we review the application of WES to different types of inherited human diseases and discuss analytical challenges and possible solutions, with the aim of providing a practical guide for the effective use of this technology.

  • In this paper, as an ideal test bed for studies on multi-agent system, the multiple micro robot soccer playing system is introduced at first. The construction of such experimental system has involved lots of kinds of challenges such as sensors fusing, robot designing, vision processing, motion controlling, and especially the cooperation planning of those robots. So in this paper we want to stress emphasis on how to evolve the system automatically based on the model of behavior-based learning in multi-agent domain. At first we present such model in common sense and then apply it to the realistic experimental system . At last we will give some results showing that the proposed approach is feasi...

  • Studies of epidemiological and prognostic factors are very important for oncology practice. There is a rapidly increasing amount of research and resultant knowledge in the scientific literature. This means that health professionals have major challenges in accessing relevant information and they increasingly require best available evidence to make their clinical decisions. Meta-analyses of prognostic and other epidemiological factors are very practical statistical approaches to define clinically important parameters. However, they also feature many obstacles in terms of data collection, standardization of results from multiple centers, bias, and commentary for intepretation. In this paper, the obstacles of meta-analysis are briefly reviewed, and potential problems with this statistical method are discussed.

  • The present study explores how the stress of online learners is related to Korean cultural norms and social expectation and presents the criteria online education should aim at when designing instructional approaches. A sample of 176 students from a Korean online university participated in a study investigating the patterns in the academic and personal stressors they face. This study also examines stressor types in relation to sample characteristics, analyzed with a categorization method developed by extant researchers on the stress faced by U.S. college students. Unlike the findings of previous studies on college student stress, this study's results reveal that nontraditional Korean online students were faced with (1) taking on the multiple roles at work and home prescribed by cultural and social norms, and (2) challenges in regulating study habits and the learning environment as adult learners. The relevant implications for the design of online learning are discussed.

  • The ability to share knowledge internally is critical to a firm's capability to gain competitive advantage through the leveraging of a firm's competencies, which are often "imprisoned" and dispersed across it's multiple businesses. The purpose of this paper is to propose knowledge sharing related factors which focus on variables regarding the success of knowledge sharing. To attain this purpose, this paper is structured in four main sections. We examined various concepts of knowledge sharing in the past research. We then briefly discuss about trends of methodological approach from the review of the existing studies. We go on to identify the factors that facilitate or hinder knowledge sharing within the firm. Factors regarding knowledge sharing were identified, analyzed, and summarized. Those factors could be categorize into three dimensions (structural, relational, and knowledge characteristics). Finally, we suggested areas for future research. Implications for the study on knowledge sharing were provided.

  • Total auricular reconstruction with autogenous tissue remains one of the greatest technical challenges for reconstructive plastic surgeons because of the ear's complex morphology with delicately convoluted cartilages and very thin skin. In a successfully created ear, a natural three-dimensional illusion visualized from the patient's profile, frontal, and posterior views is crucial. Accordingly ear framework should have adequate lateral aspect as well as suitable frontal aspect even before being lifted to this purpose. For this goal, rib cartilage should be harvested from three-dimensionally adequate area. It is the most essential point in framework fabrication that the baseblock should have semi-cup curvature via multiple parallel cuts made on its medial surface. Between January 1999 and May 2003, we performed 29 cases of total ear reconstruction with autogenous rib cartilage graft using this scoring technique and obtained satisfactory results, which showed more natural appearance visualized from the patient's profile, frontal, and posterior views.

  • We propose a robust object cataloging method using multiple locally distinct heterogeneous features for aiding image retrieval. Due to challenges such as variations in object size, orientation, illumination etc. object recognition is extraordinarily challenging problem. In these circumstances, we adapt local interest point detection method which locates prototypical local components in object imageries. In each local component, we exploit heterogeneous features such as gradient-weighted orientation histogram, sum of wavelet responses, histograms using different color spaces etc. and combine these features together to describe each component divergently. A global signature is formed by adapting the concept of bag of feature model which counts frequencies of its local components with respect to words in a dictionary. The proposed method demonstrates its excellence in classifying objects in various complex backgrounds. Our proposed local feature shows classification accuracy of 98% while SURF,SIFT, BRISK and FREAK get 81%, 88%, 84% and 87% respectively.
