  • The vibration characteristics of continuous span periodically supported beams with moving loads are determined theoretically and experimentally. Moving loads are assumed to travel at constant acceleration with constant magnitude. Analyses by using the Fourier Transform technique are developed to determine the dynamic performance of moving load interacting with multiple and continuous beam. Equation of motion for the moving load is non-dimensionalized. Non-dimensional deflection proflies of continuous beam are presented in detail for the single concentrated moving load with constant acceleration. Experimental moving load and continuous beam models are developed. The maximum deflections at each midpoints 5,7 and 9 span beam are measured and their non-dimensional maximum deflections are presented. The non-dimensional maximum deflection of continuous beam is compared with measured maximum deflection of 9 span beam and found to agree reasonably well. The deflection of continuous beam due to moving load with acceleration is strongly influenced in the resonance region.

  • The paper presents a numerical study to evaluate the phase velocities and attenuations of the average longitudinal and shear ultrasonic waves resulting from multiple scattering in fiber-reinforced composites. A computational procedure developed in this work is first used to produce a random, yet largely even distribution of fibers. Both the viscoelastic epoxy matrix and lossless randomly distributed graphite fibers are modeled using the mass-spring-dashpot lattice model, with no damping for the latter. By numerically simulating ultrasonic through-transmission tests using this direct model of composites, phase velocities and attenuations of the longitudinal and shear waves through the composite are found as functions of frequency or fiber concentration. The numerical results are observed to generally agree with the corresponding results in the literature. Discrepancies found in some detail aspects, particularly in the attenuation results, are also addressed.

  • Change is inevitable and is a reality of construction projects. Most construction contracts include change clauses and allowing contractors an equitable adjustment to the contract price and duration caused by change. However, the actions of a contractor can cause a loss of productivity and furthermore can result in disruption of the whole project because of a cumulative or ripple effect. Because of its complicated nature, it becomes a complex issue to determine the cumulative impact (ripple effect) caused by single or multiple change orders. Furthermore, owners and contractors do not always agree on the adjusted contract price for the cumulative Impact of the changes. A number of studies have attempted to quantify the impact of change orders on project costs and schedule. Many of these attempted to develop regression models to quantify the loss. However, regression analysis has shortcomings in dealing with many qualitative or noisy input data. This study develops ANN models to classify and quantify the labor productivity losses that are caused by the cumulative impact of change orders. The results skew that ANN models give significantly improved performance compared to traditional statistical models.

  • In the present study, a numerical analysis of transient mixer flow is performed considering free surface formation. The flow patterns and free surface shape in a mixers formed by flat paddle and pitched paddle impellers are predicted. In a flat paddle mixer, two flow circulation regions are formed due to strong radial flow, whereas one large circulation is formed in a pitched paddle mixer due to axial downward flow. These differences affect the free surface evolution and shape. It is seen from the results that a flat paddle mixer gives deeper free surface at center region than a pitched paddle mixer. The free surface of 8-blades-flat-paddle mixer is also simulated to compare with the available experimental and simulation results. The present computational results agree reasonably well with the experimental data.

  • Fundamental period is one of the most critical parameters affecting the seismic design of buildings. In this paper, a very simple approach is presented for estimating the fundamental period of multiple-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) structures. The basic idea behind this approach is to replace the complicated MDOF system with an equivalent single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system. To realize this equivalence, a procedure for replacing a two-degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) system with an SDOF system, known as a two-to-single (TTS) procedure, is developed first; then, using the TTS procedure successively, an MDOF system is replaced with an equivalent SDOF system. The proposed approach is expressed in terms of mass, stiffness, and number of stories, without mode shape or any other parameters; thus, it is a very simple method. The accuracy of the proposed method is investigated by estimating the fundamental periods of many MDOF models; it is found that the results obtained by the proposed method agree very well with those obtained by eigenvalue analysis.

  • FIAS(Flood Inundation Analysis System) using Arc/Info is developed and applied to the Namhan River basin. The DWOPER model is revised and expanded to handle simultaneous multiple overtopping and/or breaking, and to estimate the inundated depth and extents. The model is applied to an actual levee overtopping case, which occurred on August 23∼27, 1995 in the Namhan River. Stage hydrographs inside and outside of the levee are compared, then inundated discharges from overbank spilling are computed. The Graphic User interface is developed with AML. Two- and three-dimensional inundation map by Arc/Info are presented. The computed inundation extends agree with observations in terms of inundated depth and flooded area. The FIAS is useful for the analysis of flood hazards and preparation of inundation map for river basins.

  • The general shapes of prebreakdown pulses in a discharge gap were calculated and the current pulses due to avalanche were detected in SF6 by changing the polarity of the protrusion placed on an electrode at pressures up to about 400 Kpa. The mathematical model of prebreakdown pulse development with a negative protrusion shows agreement with the observed pulses. No evidence of intense bursts of field-emitted electrons was observed. Breakdown probably results from a single avalanche developing to a critical size. However the calculated shape of prebreakdown current pulse does not agree with the observed pulses with a positive protrusion. The breakdown is preceded by multiple avalanche development at pressures less than about 200 Kpa. This observation has been interpreted as due to the formation of negative ions following photoionization in the gas which drift into the critical volume near a positive protrusion.

  • The volume of fluid (VOF) model of FLUENT and the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) are used to simulate two-phase flows. Both methods are validated for static and dynamic bubble test cases and then compared to experimental results. The VOF method does not reduce the spurious currents of the static droplet test and does not satisfy the Laplace law for small droplets at the acceptable level, as compared with the LBM. For single bubble flows, simulations are executed for various Eotvos numbers, Morton numbers and Reynolds numbers, and the results of both methods agree well with the experiments in the case of low Eotvos numbers. For high Eotvos numbers, the VOF results deviated from the experiments. For multiple bubbles, the bubble flow characteristics are related by the wake of the leading bubble. The coaxial and oblique coalescence of the bubbles are simulated successfully and the subsequent results are presented. In conclusion, the LBM performs better than the VOF method.

  • A new method has been developed to solve the star cluster membership problem. It is based on synthetic photometry employing the Black Body concept as stellar radiation simulator. Synthetic color-magnitude diagram is constructed showing the main sequence band and the positions of binary star systems of combinations of various components through different photometric tracks. The method has been applied to the Hyades. The cluster membership problem has been re-appraised for the cluster (both single and binary) stars. For the binary members, the components' spectral types have been derived by the method. The results obtained agree very well with those found in literature, The method is simpler than the others and can be developed to undertake other cases as multiple star systems.

  • The optimized structures and complexation energies of bis(18-crown-6-ether) analogue (2) of Trgers base (1) with a series of primary alkylbisammonium ions have been calculated by DFT B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) method. The calculated complexation efficiency (-142.84 kcal/mol) of 2 for butane-1,4-diylbisammonium guest is better than twice of the value (-61.40 kcal/mol) for butylammonium ion. The multiple hydrogen-bond abilities for the complexes are described as the function of the length of the alkyl substituents of the bisammonium guests with normal-alkyl chain [$-(CH_2)_{n-}$, n = 4-8]. The longer bisammonium guest shows the stronger hydrogen-bonding characterizations (the distance and the quasi-linear angle of the N-H…O) to the host 2 than the shorter bisammonium ions. These calculated results agree with the experimental data of the complexation of 2 with bisammonium salts ([$NH_3(CH_2)_nNH_3$] $Cl_2$).
