Object-based Multimedia Contents Storage for Mobile Devices

  • Mobile devices, such as PDAs, portable multimedia players, are more likely to encompass large storage devices with prevalance of high-quality multimedia contents. This paper proposes an object-based multimedia contents storage architecture that employs the object-based storage device model and the iSCSI protocol. It also provides a multimedia content player that operates directly with the proposed storage architecture. We implement both the proposed storage architecture and the multimedia content player upon the Linux environment. Performance evaluation by playing MP3 multimedia contents reveals that the proposed storage architecture reduces the total power consumption by 9%, compared with an existing networked storage. This enhancement is mainly contributed to the fact that a large portion of the file system is moved into the object-based multimedia contents storage from the mobile device.

Multimedia Room Bridge Adapter for Seamless Interoperability between Heterogeneous Home Network Devices

  • A home network is a typical ubiquitous computing network that consists of various consumer devices and service environments. Home networks are requiring increasingly more complicated services, such as multimedia home theater and the monitoring and controlling of heterogeneous devices. Accordingly, a mutually connecting mechanism is needed among heterogeneous devices and services redundant. The current paper presents a Multimedia Room Bridge Adapter (MRBA) system that is designed to manage heterogeneous devices and support various services. In addition, a hardware and software prototype is implemented based on the proposed architecture.

  • 광대역 네트워크의 발달과 함께 멀티미디어 산업의 발달은 IPTV와 같은 디지털 콘텐츠 시장의 확산을 가져오고 있다. 이러한 배경 속에서 멀티미디어에 대한 욕구를 만족시키기 위해 Time-Shift 시스템이 개발되었다. 이 시스템은 시간(Time)에 대한 독립적 특성만 강조되었기 때문에 장소(Place)와 상황(Occasion)에 대해서는 독립적이지 못하다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해서 본 논문에서는 휴대용 멀티미디어 디바이스를 위한 TPO(Time, Place, Occasion)-Shift 시스템에 대한 설계를 제안한다. 휴대용 멀티미디어 디바이스에서 지원 가능한 프로파일과 일반 셋탑박스에서 지원 가능한 프로파일은 다르고, 휴대용 디바이스에서는 대용량의 멀티미디어 데이터를 무한정으로 저장할 수 없기 때문에 한정된 양의 데이터를 원하는 프로파일로 계속저장하는 것이 설계의 핵심이다. 따라서 보다 효율적인 버퍼 관리를 위해서 지정시간 단위의 바스켓을 구성하고, 바스켓의 파일이름에 시간정보를 삽입함으로써 새로운 콘텐츠 구성을 위한 DTS(Decoding Time Stamp) 정보로 파일이름을 사용할 수 있다. 따라서 트랜스코딩을 통하여 데이터 변환할 때, DTS정보를 이용하여 새로운 포맷의 콘텐츠를 휴대용 멀티미디어 디바이스에 구성할 수 있게 된다. 또한 바스켓 기반의 버퍼시스템를 이용하여 모바일 디바이스에 실시간으로 컨텐츠를 구성하고 셋탑박스내에서 메모리를 적게 사용한다. 본 논문에서 제안한 TPO-Shift시스템은 윈도우즈 비스타의 환경에서 다이렉트쇼(Directshow) 재생기를 이용한 셋탑박스, 그리고 휴대용 디바이스인 MS340 단말기로 구현하였으며, 실시간으로 TPO-Shift 시스템을 충분히 실행함을 확인할 수 있었다.

멀티 디스플레이 콘텐츠 전송 시스템을 위한 디바이스 연결 및 배치 인식 기법의 구현 (An Implementation of Device Connection and Layout Recognition Techniques for the Multi-Display Contents Delivery System)

  • According to the advancement of display devices, the multi-screen contents display environment is growing to be accepted for the display exhibition area. The objectives of this research are to find communications technology and to design an editor interface of contents delivery system for the larger and adaptive multi-display workspaces. The proposed system can find existence of display devices and get information without any additional tools like marker, and can recognize device layout with only web-cam and image processing technology. The multi-display contents delivery system is composed of devices with three roles; display device, editor device, and fixed server. The editor device which has the role of main control uses UPnP technology to find existence and receive information of display devices. extract appointed color in captured picture using a tracking library to recognize the physical layout of display devices. After the device information and physical layout of display devices are connected, the content delivery system allows the display contents to be sent to the corresponding display devices through WebSocket technology. Also the experimental results show the possibility of our device connection and layout recognition techniques can be utilized for the large spaced and adaptive multi-display applications.

A Study on the Processing of Timestamps in the Creation of Multimedia Files on Mobile Devices

  • Digital data can be manipulated easily, so information related to the timestamp is important in establishing the reliability of the data. The time values for a certain file can be extracted following the analysis of the filesystem metadata or file internals, and the information can be utilized to organize a timeline for a digital investigation. Suppose the reversal of a timestamp is found on a mobile device during this process. In this case, a more detailed analysis is required due to the possibility of anti-forensic activity, but little previous research has investigated the handling and possible manipulation of timestamps on mobile devices. Therefore, in this study, we determine how time values for multimedia files are handled according to the operating system or filesystem on mobile devices. We also discuss five types of timestamps-file created (C), last modified (M), last accessed (A), digitalized (Di), and filename (FN) of multimedia files, and experimented with their operational features across multiple devices such as smartphones and cameras.

  • According to the progress of multimedia technology and growth of high speed network, plenty of multimedia contents are produced and in circulation. Because of these reasons, it is required that the method which can manage efficiently and make multimedia contents, for which are saved in Storage as different used, synchronize. In this paper, the metadata schema that can manage the method with being database using each Device metadata that are produced by extracting the needed information to multimedia contents is suggested. And the method that can make synchronized multimedia contents metadata on connecting between heterogeneous devices is proposed.

  • The recent advance in wireless network technologies has enabled the streaming media service on the mobile devices such as PDAs and cellular phones. Since the wireless network has low bandwidth channels and mobile devices are actually composed of limited hardware specifications, the transcoding technology is needed to adapt streaming media to given mobile devices. Futhermore owing to the diversity of bandwidth in the wireless network by reason of mobile users' movements and environments, it is difficult to provide stable QoS. In this paper, the autonomic multimedia transcoding system is proposed in order for users to provide network adaptive QoS. Our proposed system is based on the estimation of available bandwidth in wireless network for seamless multimedia streaming service. The proposed system is designed and implemented for various mobile clients. In experiments, we evaluate its seamless multimedia streaming and the adaptation transcoding bit rate according to the changes of bandwidth in wireless network.

The Security Systems in the Wireless Home Networks

  • In the near future, the wireless home networks will connect several devices at home. Due to the broadcast nature of a wireless network, anyone can hear and capture communication. Thus, we need to protect our network from attacks outside the house. In this paper, we propose and implement a security system that provides different levels of the security services to heterogenous home devices. To reduce the communication cost and workload of the server, home devices send the encrypted messages directly instead of sending through the sever. We implement our security system on laptops using JAVA and our security system achieves the better performance with the large number of devices and messages in a network. In order to prove that our security system is secure against various attacks, we analyze the security of our security system using attack trees.

  • 유비쿼터스 홈 환경(UHE: Ubiquitous Home Environment)에서의 멀티미디어 서비스에서는 사용자의 직접적인 명령 없이 자동적으로 실행되는 지능화된 서비스 와 각각의 사용자에 맞는 맞춤형 서비스, 사용자 편의성 및 투명성, 이종 디바이스간 멀티미디어 콘텐츠의 상호 호환성 등의 요구사항이 증가할 것이다. 또한, 이에 적합한 멀티미디어 보호 관리 및 인증 권한관리 방식 등이 필요 할 것이다. 본 논문에서는 UHE에 적합한 인증방식을 제안$\cdot$적용하며, 이종 기기간 멀티미디어 상호 운용성을 보장하며, 센서모듈과 홈서버를 이용한 상황정보(사용자 취향 정보, 디바이스정보 등)를 지능적으로 처리하고, 투명하고 안전한 서비스를 제공할 수 있는 사용자 중심 멀티미디어서비스(UHMS: Ubiquitous Home Multimedia Service)를 제안한다.

  • Recently, flash memory is becoming popular as storage system to store and retrieve multimedia files. However, there are few researches about multimedia file system for flash memory based storage devices. We have been designing and developing a novel multimedia file systems for flash memory. In this paper, we describe the semantics of real-time retrieval of multimedia data and present scheduling scheme to guarantee the real-time requirements in our multimedia file system.
