  • Multilayer neural networks with backpropagation learning algorithm are widely used for pattern classification problems. For many real applications, it is more important to reduce the misclassification rate than to increase the rate of successful classification. But multilayer perceptrons(MLP's) have drawbacks of slow learning speed and false convergence to local minima. In this paper, we propose a new method for character recognition problems with a single-layer network and double rejection mechanisms, which guarantees a very low misclassification rate. Comparing to the MLP's, it yields fast learning and requires a simple hardware architecture. We also introduce a new coding scheme to reduce the misclassification rate. We have prepared two databases: one with 135,000 digit patterns and the other with 117,000 letter patterns, and have applied the proposed method for printed character recognition, which shows that the method reduces the misclassification rate significantly without sacrificing the correct recognition rate.

  • This paper describes an approach for classifying myoelectric patterns using a multilayer perceptrons (MLP's) and hidden Markov models (HMM's) hybrid classifier. The dynamic aspects of EMG are important for tasks such as continuous prosthetic control or vari- ous time length EMG signal recognition, which have not been successfully mastered by the most neural approaches. It is known that the hidden Markov model (HMM) is suitable for modeling temporal patterns. In contrasts the multilayer feedforward networks are suitable for static patterns. Ank a lot of investigators have shown that the HMM's to be an excellent tool for handling the dynamical problems. Considering these facts, we suggest the combination of MLP and HMM algorithms that might lead to further improved EMG recognition systems.

  • In recent years, many attempts have been made to predict the behavior of bonds, currencies, stock, or other economic markets. Most previous experiments used multilayer perceptrons(MLP) for stock market forecasting. The Kospi 200 Index is modeled using different neural networks and fuzzy system predictions. In this paper, a multilayer perceptron architecture, a dynamic polynomial neural network(DPNN) and a fuzzy system are used to predict the Kospi 200 index. The results of prediction is compared with the root mean squared error(RMSE) and the scatter plot. Results show that both networks can be trained to predict the index. And the fuzzy system is performing slightly better than DPNN and MLP.

  • An incremental learning algorithm is presented that constructs a multilayer perceptron whose size is optimal for solving a given problem. Unlike conventional algorithms in which a fixed size training set is processed repeat-edly, the method uses an increasing number of critical examples to find a necessary and sufficient number of hidden units for learning the entire data. Experimental results in hand- writtern digit recognition shows that the network size optimization combined with incremental pattern selection generalizes significantly better and converges faster than conventional methods.

  • Autonomic machines interacting with human should have capability to perceive the states of emotion and attitude through implicit messages for obtaining voluntary cooperation from their clients. Voice is the easiest and most natural way to exchange human messages. The automatic systems capable to understanding the states of emotion and attitude have utilized features based on pitch and energy of uttered sentences. Performance of the existing emotion recognition systems can be further improved withthe support of linguistic knowledge that specific tonal section in a sentence is related with the states of emotion and attitude. In this paper, we attempt to improve recognition rate of emotion by adopting such linguistic knowledge for Korean ending boundary tones into anautomatic system implemented using pitch-related features and multilayer perceptrons. From the results of an experiment over a Korean emotional speech database, the improvement of $4\%$ is confirmed.

  • This paper describes an approach for classifying myoelectric patterns using a multilayer perceptrons (MLP's) with genetic algorithm and hidden Markov models (HMM's) hybrid classifier. Genetic Algorithms play a role of selecting Multilayer Perceptron's optimized initial connection weights by its typical global search. The dynamic aspects of EMG are important for tasks such as continuous prosthetic control or various time length EMG signal recognition, which have not been successfully mastered by the most neural approaches. It is known that the hidden Markov model (HMM) is suitable for modeling temporal patterns. In contrast, the multilayer feedforward networks are suitable for static patterns. • While multilayer perceptrons (MLPs) have great possibility on the application to speaker verification, they suffer from inferior learning speed. To appeal to users, the speaker verification systems based on MLPs must achieve a reasonable enrolling speed and it is thoroughly dependent on the fast teaming of MLPs. To attain real-time enrollment on the systems, the previous two studies have been devoted to the problem and each satisfied the objective. In this paper, the two studies are combined and applied to the systems, on the assumption that each method operates on different optimization principle. By conducting experiments using an MLP-based speaker verification system to which the combination is applied on real speech database, the feasibility of the combination is verified from the results of the experiments.

  • In this paper, an equalizer(RNE) using nonlinear multilayer combining techniques in Bayesian equalizer with a structure of radial basis function network is proposed in order to simplify the structure and enhance the performance of the equalizer(RE) using a radial basis function network. The conventional RE Produces its output using linear combining the outputs of the basis functions in the hidden layer while the proposed RNE produces its output using nonlinear combining the outputs of the basis function in the first hidden layer. The nonlinear combiner is implemented by multilayer perceptrons(MLPs). In addition, as an infinite impulse response structure, the RNE with decision feedback equalizer (RNDFE) is proposed. The proposed equalizer has simpler structure and shows better performance than the conventional RE in terms of bit error probability and mean square error.

  • This paper proposes a new Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm that is accelerated by adjusting a Jacobian matrix and a quasi-Hessian matrix. The proposed method partitions the Jacobian matrix into block matrices and employs the inverse of a partitioned matrix to find the inverse of the quasi-Hessian matrix. Our method can avoid expensive operations and save memory in calculating the inverse of the quasi-Hessian matrix. It can shorten the training time for fast convergence. In our results tested in a large application, we were able to save about 20% of the training time than other algorithms.
