A Study on Multicultural Mentor's Capacity (다문화 멘토의 역량에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the competence needed to be possessed by multicultural mentors, and offer an education program for the competence development of mentors. From June to September of the year 2016 in-depth interviews were conducted with 10 mentors who have participated in multicultural mentoring for over a year concentrating on the result of their participation in the mentoring. The interview contents were transcribed, then analyzed into learning competence, psychological competence, social competence as well as cultural competence. The result of the analysis is as follows. First, the learning competence needed for mentors are intellectual capability and teaching skills needed when teaching mentors. Second, the psychological competence consists of the attitude of attentively listening to mentees and advising them. Third, the social competence is conversation skills, communication techniques and leadership. Fourth, the cultural competence consists of recognizing diversity and the ability to manage the mentee's situation. Based on the analysis of this result, educational plans for enhancing mentor's capacity are as follows: First, education for mentors is necessary before they will begin mentoring. Second, it is necessary to provide a place for mentors' self-reflection. Third, it is for mentors to receive regular counseling. This study will become a basic research to reinforce the effectiveness of mentoring and reconsider the importance of mentor's capacity.

Factors Affecting Unmet Healthcare Needs of Working Married Immigrant Women in South Korea

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the factors affecting on unmet healthcare needs of married immigrant women, especially who are working in South Korea. Methods: It is designed as a cross-sectional descriptive study. We analyzed data from 8,142 working married immigrant women to the 'National Survey of Multicultural Families 2015.' Based on Andersen's health behavior model, logistic regression was conducted to determine the predictors of unmet healthcare need. Results: The prevalence of unmet healthcare needs among the subjects was 11.6%. In multivariate analysis, significant predictors of unmet needs included existence of preschooler, country of origin, period of residence in predisposing factors, monthly household income, helpful social relationship, social discrimination, Korean proficiency, working hour per week in enabling factors, and self-rated health, experience of grief or desperation in need factors. Conclusion: The association between labor-related factors and unmet healthcare needs of marriage immigrant women currently working was found from nationally representative sample. Support policies for immigrant women working more than legally defined hours and having preschooler should be supplemented to reduce unmet healthcare needs. In addition, eradicating discrimination in workplace, enlarging social relationship, and developing culturally competent nursing services tailored to health problems caused by labor are needed.

Public Health Center Service Experiences and Needs among Immigrant Women in South Korea

  • Purpose: To support implementation of comprehensive, person-centered healthcare, this study aimed to explore immigrant women's public health center (PHC) service experiences and needs while considering Photovoice's feasibility for this purpose. Methods: This qualitative study included 15 marriage-based immigrant women. Participants were recruited from churches and multicultural family support centers using purposive and snowball sampling. Data were collected through four focus group interviews and were subjected to inductive content analysis. Results: Five categories of experiences were identified: language barriers, hectic environment, affordable and practical primary healthcare, feeling ignored and discriminated against, and feeling frustrated. In addition, five categories of needs were identified: language assistance services, ease of access, healthcare across the lifespan, expansion of affordable healthcare, and being accepted as they are. This study provides preliminary evidence that the Photovoice approach can facilitate the interview process in a qualitative inquiry involving participants with limited ability to express their perspectives in the researchers' language. Conclusion: Study findings highlight the need to implement institutional policy and procedural changes within PHCs and to provide culturally competent, personcentered care for South Korea's marriage-based immigrant women and other ethnic minority populations. The findings also provide evidence-based direction for PHC service planning.

An Analytical Study on Research Trends of the Library Services for the Information Poor in Korea (정보불평등 계층을 위한 도서관서비스 관련 국내 연구동향 분석)

  • Libraries are recently emerging as the core institutions designed to resolve the information equality that is forecasted to further deepen with the arrival of the fourth industry revolution era. This study thus analyzed the trends of studies on the library services offered to people suffering information inequality in Korea, and proposed measures for the activation of the research and future studies so as to strengthen the domestic library services targeting the people suffering information equality and to promote the research. As a result, proposed as measures for the activation of research were (1) Policy support and project expansion at the national level, (2) Various approaches and research environment creation at the academic level, (3) Strengthening of services for the various levels of people suffering information inequality and deployment of professional librarians at the level of libraries, and (4) Encouraging librarians to enroll with graduate schools and to conduct research. Further, proposed were the future studies that can be approached according to the various levels of people suffering information inequality, such as disabled people, multicultural family members, elderly people, children, youth, agricultural and fishing areas, low-income people, and refugees(North Korea defectors).

Studies on Family Support Programs according to the Needs of Community Residents (지역주민의 욕구에 따른 가족지원사업 필요에 관한 연구)

  • This study analyzes the surveys of local residents on their family-related needs and finds the differences of specific target attributes in order to establish family support projects that can meet the specific demands. The results are as follows. First, the domestic concerns of local residents were more related to 'difficulties in their children's education and care' compared to 'family relationship problems'. Second, although there is high awareness of family support centers, the overall utilization is very low, and utilization is high amongst families with special needs such as single-parent families, multi-cultural families, and kinship families. However, utilization was low amongst families without special needs. Third, the desired services varied by gender, age, education level, family structure, occupation, and income level. Therefore, there is a need for tailored service programs and promotion of Multicultural Family Support Center that reflects the needs of the diverse needs of local families.

Role of Self-efficiency in the Career Activities of Marriage Immigrant Women (결혼이주여성의 진로활동에서 자기효능감의 역할)

  • This study explores role of self-efficiency in the career activities of marriage immigrant women. It is expected that self-efficiency would contribute to marriage immigrant women helping them to overcome the difficulties of their lives spontaneously and keep on their careers. For this, it was conducted that in-depth interview with seven marriage immigrant women. Conclusion was classified into two parts as following. The conclusion is from whether marriage immigrant woman has self-efficiency in her career purpose and career barrier. First, in the conclusion of career purpose, higher self-efficiency leads to constant career fulfillment and positive self image and lower self efficiency gives rise to absence of neighboring subgoal and discontinuity or lagging of personal career. Second, in the conclusion of career barrier, higher self-efficiency person would consider career barrier as an object to get over. On the contrary, lower self-efficiency person could not find the proper strategies to deal with career barrier and conform to the barrier and give up the career.

A Study of Married Immigrant Women's Career Goals and the Meaning (결혼이주여성들의 진로목표와 그 의미에 관한 연구)

  • This study is focused on defining what is their career goals and the standard to set up the goals as an individual married immigrant women. Marriage immigrant women are expected to have higher difficult than Korean women do in reality, so the research will figure out what career goal marriage immigrant women have to achieve the goal. As the results, the data has been collected from seven of the married immigrant women through in-depth interview, the conclusion is as followed: First, career goal for married immigrant women turns out self-reliance and valuable life. Career is used in wide spread range including a job, and their career goal is for being a self-employed, a travel guide, an english teacher, and a regular worker. They have various goal for valuable life to feel that their living is better than monetary stuff, to have a healing tour through music, and to exchange with foreign scholars and train junior scholars. They hope they can be confident as a part of the Korean society and be able to help others and to see themselves as valued to live a life.

Second Language Acquisition for Children of Korean and Chinese Multicultural Family (중국계 결혼이주여성의 자녀 모어 교육에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the reasons why Chinese marriage immigrant women do not teach their children to learn their mother tongue to second language and to present improvement plans about it. We have collected data mainly through in-depth-interview of four Chinese marriage immigrant women that have lived in Korea for more than 10 years from March to June, 2017. The results show that there are four environmental aspects why they do not teach their children to learn their mother tongue. First, their children are lack of access to learn Chinese. Second, their children do not want to learn Chinese because of the negative images of China in Korea. Third, Chinese marriage immigrant women are busy adjusting themselves to the Korean society so that they have no time to teach their children to learn Chinese. Lastly, Chinese marriage immigrant women are lack of confidence to teach their children to learn Chinese and Chinese culture, because it exist that Koreans have negative perceptions of other cultures. We hope that there will be opportunities for marriage immigrant women to teach their children to learn their mother tongue through this study.

A case study on the gender equality experience of Chinese married immigrant women in Korea (중국결혼이주여성들의 한국에서 양성평등 경험에 대한 사례연구)

  • This study was carried out to investigate what kind of problems gender equality in Chinese married immigrant women have in marriage. We interviewed five Chinese marriage immigrant women married to Korean men for research. Using the case study method, which is a qualitative research method, five research participants analyzed gender equality awareness and gender equality conflict after migration. As a result, the marital conflicts, which are the difference of recognition of gender equality among married immigrant women, were different according to the family life culture of their home countries, the route of meeting with their husbands, and their understanding of Chinese culture. Nonetheless, most of the research participants showed that they accepted the Korean women's values in the form of conforming to the Korean patriarchal system while taking the inequality by attempting to assimilate positively in Korean society. And some of them resulted in the failure of the family because of the patriarchal values of the Korean husband. Based on the results of this study, we discussed the problems of gender equality in multicultural families in Korea and discussed ways to improve them.

Mentoring activity Effects for Multicultural Students : Using Logic Model (다문화학생을 위한 멘토링 활동 효과 : 논리모델을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of mentoring program using logic model in university students. We surveyed 40 mentors who participated mentoring program in 2014. Data collection were open-ended questions. Questions was made of with a steps in logic model and content analysis was carried out. The results are as follows: first, according to the step of the inputs, many students questioned said that public relations, selection process, matching, orientations, activity costs was proper. Secondly, in the activities, it was showed that mentor met firstly mentee with teacher in school and mentoring activities comprised 80% of studying and 20% of counseling and experiencing. third, in the outputs, most of participants expressed satisfaction in mentoring period, time, place. Lastly, in the outcomes, this program affected both mentor and mentee with cognitive, emotional and behavior development. Consequentially, this results have influence on improvement of following mentoring programs.
