  • Despite its graceful bandwidth saving nature, IP multicast has not been successful in widely spreading and using. Challenging includes policy and technological issues such as inter-domain routing, multicast availability and reachability. Properly detecting and isolating the faults would be the first step to stabilize IP multicast. In this paper, we introduce a scalable multicast monitoring framework. To efficiently cope with multicast network and networking problems, it enlarges its monitoring scopes from collecting delivery statistics to verifying end-to-end multicast availability, reachability and interactivity. We carry out various networking experiments to verify the scalability and feasibility of the proposed framework.

  • As real-time media applications based on IP multicast networks spread widely, the end-to-end QoS (quality of service) provisioning for these applications have become very important. To guarantee the end-to-end QoS of multi-party media applications, it is essential to monitor the time-varying status of both network metrics (i.e., delay, jitter and loss) and system metrics (i.e., CPU and memory utilization). In this paper, targeting the multicast-enabled AG (Access Grid) group collaboration tool based on multi-Party real-time media services, a hybrid monitoring scheme that can monitor the status of both multicast network and node system is investigated. It combines active monitoring and passive monitoring approaches to measure multicast network. The active monitoring measures network-layer metrics (i.e., network condition) with probe packets while the passive monitoring checks application-layer metrics (i.e., user traffic condition by analyzing RTCP packets). In addition, it measures node system metrics from system API. By comparing these hybrid results, we attempt to pinpoint the causes of performance degradation and explore corresponding reactions to improve the end-to-end performance. The experimental results show that the proposed hybrid monitoring can provide useful information to coordinate the performance improvement of multi-party real-time media applications.

  • IP Multicast can efficiently provide enormous bandwidth savings by enabling sources to send a single copy of a message to multiple recipients who explicitly want to receive the information. But due to the complexity of IP multicast and its fundamental differences from unicast, there are not very many tools available fer monitoring and debugging multicast networks, and only a few experts understand the tools that do exist. This thesis proposes a Multicast Routing Debugger (MRD) system that monitor the status of a multicast network. This system is aimed to multicast-related faults detection. In thesis, first, we define the set of information that should be monitored. Second, the method is developed to take out such information from multicast routers. Third, MRD system is prototyped to collect, process information from heterogeneous routers on a multicast network and to display the various status of the network comprehensively. The prototype of MRD system is implemented and deployed. We perform experiments with several scenarios. Experimental results show we can detect various problems as information that we define is monitored. The MRD system is simple to use, web-based and intuitive tool that can monitor the status of a specific multicast network.

  • Detecting environmental hazards and monitoring remote terrain are among many sensor network applications. In case of fire detection, it is significantly valuable to monitor fire-spot's shape and trend in time. Mobile ad hoc sensor nodes right round are responsible for sensoring, processing and networking packets, or even launching extinguisher. In this paper, we proposed a ring-oriented Multicast architecture based on "Fisheye State Routing" (MFSR) to organize a group of mobile ad hoc sensor nodes in a multicast way. It is familiar with traditional mesh-based multicast protocol [1] in mobile ad hoc network, trying to concentrates on efficiency and robustness simultaneously. Certain applications-based solution for hazards is proposed, quantitative results including architecture and recovery algorithms of MFSR are also investigated in this paper.

  • This paper proposes a protocol for the reliableand QoS-aware multicast transport, which is called the Enhanced Communications Transport Protocol (ECTP). The ECTP has so far been developed and standardized in ITU-T SG17 and ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 6. Differently from the conventional reliable multicast, as shownin the IETF RMT WG, the ECTP additionally provides several distinct features such as tight control of multicast session, tree-based error control, and QoS management. For the tight control of multicast connections, the sender is at the heart of one-to-many group communications, and it is responsible for overall connection management such as connection creation/termination, pause/resumption, and the join and leave operations. for tree-based reliability control, ECTP configures a hierarchical tree during connection creation. Error control is performed within each local group defined by a control tree, which was partly designed like the IETF TRACK approach. Each parent retransmits lost data in response to retransmission requests from its children. For QoS management, ECTP supports QoS negotiation for resource reservation, and it also provides QoS monitoring and maintenance operations. ECTP has been implemented and tested on Linux machine, along with Application Programming Interfaces based on Berkeley sockets. For basic testing of the ECTP functionality, we give some preliminary experimental results for performance comparison of ECTP and TCP unicast transports. In conclusion, we describe the status of ECTP experimentations over APAN/KOREN testbed networks

  • Unlike a typical video wall system, video wall systems used for integrated monitoring in smart city environments should be able to display various videos, images, and texts simultaneously. In this paper, we propose an Internet Protocol (IP)-based video wall system that has no limit on the number of videos that can be monitored simultaneously, and that can arrange the monitor screen layout without restrictions. The proposed system is composed of multiple display servers, a wall controller, and video source providers, and they communicate with each other through an IP network. Since the display server receives and decodes the video stream directly from the video source devices, and displays it on the attached monitor screens, more videos can be simultaneously displayed on the entire video wall. When one video is displayed over several screens attached to multiple display servers, only one display server receives the video stream and transmits it to the other display servers by using IP multicast communications, thereby reducing the network load and synchronizing the video frames. Experiments show that as the number of videos increases, a system consisting of more display servers shows better decoding and rendering performance, and there is no performance degradation, even if the display server continues to be expanded.

  • MANET(Mobile Ad-hoc Network) has been proposed as a infrastructure-less network using distributed algorithm for remote environment monitoring and control. The mobility of MANET would make the topology change frequently compared with a static network and a node is resource-constrained. Hence, to improve the routing protocol in MANET, energy efficient routing protocol is required as well as considering the mobility would be needed. In this paper, we extend RODMRP(Resilient Ontology-based Dynamic Multicast Routing Protocol) structure by a modifying the level of cluster. We call this network protocol CACH-RODMRP. Our contribution consists estimating the optimal level of clustering depth with considering node position and reducing the network residual energy. The simulation results of proposal algorithm show that the energy is significantly reduced compared with the previous clustering based routing algorithm for the MANET.

  • In ad hoc network, the scarce energy management of the mobile devices has become a critical issue in order to extend the network lifetime. Current research activity for the Minimum Energy Multicast (MEM) problem has been focused on devising efficient centralized greedy algorithms for static ad hoc networks. In this paper, we consider mobile ad hoc networks(MANETs) that could provide the reliable monitoring and control of a variety of environments for remote place. Mobility of MANET would require the topology change frequently compared with a static network. To improve the routing protocol in MANET, energy efficient routing protocol would be required as well as considering the mobility would be needed. In this paper, we propose a new method, the CACH(Context-aware Clustering Hierarchy) algorithm, a hybrid and clustering-based protocol that could analyze the link cost from a source node to a destination node. The proposed analysis could help in defining the optimum depth of hierarchy architecture CACH utilize. The proposed CACH could use localized condition to enable adaptation and robustness for dynamic network topology protocol and this provide that our hierarchy to be resilient. As a result, our simulation results would show that CACH could find energy efficient depth of hierarchy of a cluster.
