  • This paper proposes a new multicarrier code division multiple access (CDMA) system. The proposed multicarrier CDMA system provides the advantages that the transmission bandwidth is more efficiently utilized by using divided spreading sequence, time and frequency diversity is achieved in frequency selective nultipath (acting channel, and inter-carrier interference (ICI) can be minimized by using specific data and code pattern. In this system, transmitted data bits are serial-to-parallel converted to some parallel branches. On each branch each bit is direct-sequence spread-spectrum modulated by divided spreading sequences and transmitted using orthogonal carriers. The receiver providers a Rake for each carrier, and the outputs of Rakes are combined to get time and frequency diversity. This multicarrier CDMA system allows additional flexibility in the choice of system parameters. Upon varying system parameters, bit error rate (BER) performance is examined for the proposed multicarrier CDMA system. Simulation results show that the proposed multicarrier CDMA scheme can achieve better performance than the other types of conventional multicarrier CDMA systems.

  • One of the principal disadvantages of multicarrier modulation technique is the sensitivity to the frequency offset introduced by Doppler shift. This frequency offset introduces inter-carrier interference (ICI) among the multiplicity of carriers in the multicarrier modulated signal. However, Doppler spread induced by temporal channel variations can Provide another means for diversity. In this paper, we propose a modified multicarrier code division multiple access (CDMA) system to exploit Doppler diversity as well as multipath diversity. The key work of our framework is a canonical time-frequency-based decomposition of the mobile wireless channel into series of independent fading channel. The decomposition naturally leads to a time-frequency generalization of the Rake receiver that exploits both multipath and Doppler diversity.

  • In this paper, described is the comparison of performances based on the computer simulation under IMT-2000 environment between multicode and multicarrier CDMA system for the design of wireless systems using wideband CDMA technology. From simulation results, it can be concluded that both multicode and multicarrier CDMA scheme show comparable performances. Diversity scheme of RAKE receiver is indispensible for both multicode and multicarrier CDMA systems under IMT-2000 outdoor B and vehicular B channel environment. Either Hadamard matrix or PN sequence can be used as the orthogonal code as far as the orthogonality is kept. Finally, with increasing chip rate and less users, performance is getting better.

  • Multicarrier DS-CDMA is an effective approach to combat fading and various kinds of interference. In this paper, we present an overlapped multicarrier DS-CDMA system, wherein each of the rate 1/M convolutionally-encoded symbols is also repetition coded and transmitted using overlapped multicarriers. However, since the frequency spectrums of successive carriers are allowed to overlap, the transmission bandwidth is more efficiently utilized. The effect of the overlapping percentage between successive carriers of a multicarrier DS-CDMA system on the performance is investigated to determine the overlapping percentage showing the best performance. We suggest two methods for sub-band overlapping variation. One is to allow variation of sub-band overlapping percentage when the total number of subcarriers is fixed. The other is to increase the number of sub-bands (the number of repetitions R) with fixed sub-band bandwidth. Given a total number of subcarriers MR, we show that the BER variation is highly dependent on the roll-off factor ${\beta}$ of a raised-cosine chip wave-shaping filter irrespective of convolutional encoding rate 1/M and repetition coding rate 1/R. We also analyze the possibility of reduction in total multi-user interference by considering the variation of both the roll-off factor ($0<{\beta}{\leq}1$) and the sub-band overlapping factor ($0<{\lambda}{\leq}2$), and show that the proposed system may outperform the multicarrier DS-CDMA system in [3].

  • In this paper, we present an improved multicarrier direct sequence (DS) code division multiple access (CDMA) scheme by modifying the system originally proposed by Kondo and Milstein [13]. In this modified system, different spreading sequences multiplied by a data sequence modulate different carriers. This is to prevent the multiple access capability from reducing when the fading characteristics of different carrier frequencies are highly correlated. We have derived a formula which determines the mean values of the relative received signal strength in a single carrier DS CDMA rake system and in a multicarrier DS-CDMA system. We present results on the comparison of the bit error rate (BER) performance of the two systems including the effect of correlation between fading characteristics of different frequencies under various multipath fading conditions. The results indicate that with 50 users the modified multicarrier DS CDMA system can achieve an uncoded irreducible BER of $1.7{\times}10^{-3}$ with an average received signal-to-noise ratio per bit of 10dB, which is better that $3.0{\times}10^{-3}$ achieved by the single carrier DS CDMA rake system, and also show that if multicarrier CDMA system is used with respect to single carrier CDMA system, the SNR gain is up to 4.5 dB for the uncode BER of $10^{-3}$ being achieved.

  • In this paper, we implemented the voice modem using the multicarrier DS-CDMA in powerline channels. Both TMS320C5402 of Texas Instrument and FPGA FLEX 10K EPF10K100ARC240 of ALTERA are used to realize the proposed system. For robustness in the powerline channel, we used multicarrier DS-CDMA modulation, convolutional encoding/Viterbi decoding, and interleaving. Finally, we showed satisfactory performance in the laboratory experiment.

  • In this article, we suggest a two-dimensional genetic algorithm (GA) method that applies a cognitive radio (CR) decision engine which determines the optimal transmission parameters for multicarrier communication systems. Because a CR is capable of sensing the previous environmental communication information, CR decision engine plays the role of optimizing the individual transmission parameters. In order to obtain the allowable transmission power of multicarrier based CR system demands interference analysis a priori, for the sake of efficient optimization, a two-dimensionalGA structure is proposed in this paper which enhances the computational complexity. Combined with the fitness objective evaluation standard, we focus on two multi-objective optimization methods: The conventional GA applied with the multi-objective fitness approach and the non-dominated sorting GA with Pareto-optimal sorting fronts. After comparing the convergence performance of these algorithms, the transmission power of each subcarrier is proposed as non-interference emission with its optimal values in multicarrier based CR system.

  • Multicarrier DS-CDAM is an effective approach to realize wideband CDMA system in a multipath fading channeal. In this paper, we propose a cinvolutionally-coded overlapped multicarrier DS-CDMA system, and show the performance improvement by comparing with conventional multicarrier DS-CDMA system. We consider the case of 50% overlapping with the adjacent subband to utilize the transmission bandwidth more efficiently. In the proposed multicarrier system, each of the rate 1/M convolutionally-encoded symbols is also 1/R repetition coded and transmitted using overlapped multicarriers and we may obtain the coding gain and frequency diversity effect, simultaneously. We also analyze the possibility of reduction in total MUI by considering a raised-cosine wave-shaping filter having a roll-off factor (0< ${\beta}{\le}1$). It will be shown that the proposed system outperforms the multicarrier DS-CDMA system in $^{[3]}$.

  • Multilevel inverters have been widely used for high-voltage and high-power applications. Their performance is greatly superior to that of conventional two-level inverters due to their reduced total harmonic distortion (THD), lower switch ratings, lower electromagnetic interference, and higher dc link voltages. However, they have some disadvantages such as an increased number of components, a complex pulse width modulation control method, and a voltage-balancing problem. In this paper, a novel nine-level reduced switch cascaded multilevel inverter based on a multilevel DC link (MLDCL) inverter topology with reduced switching components is proposed to improve the multilevel inverter performance by compensating the above mentioned disadvantages. This topology requires fewer components when compared to diode clamped, flying capacitor and cascaded inverters and it requires fewer carrier signals and gate drives. Therefore, the overall cost and circuit complexity are greatly reduced. This paper presents modulation methods by a novel reference and multicarrier based PWM schemes for reduced switch cascaded multilevel inverters (RSCMLI). It also compares the performance of the proposed scheme with that of conventional cascaded multilevel inverters (CCMLI). Simulation results from MATLAB/SIMULINK are presented to verify the performance of the nine-level RSCMLI. Finally, a prototype of the nine-level RSCMLI topology is built and tested to show the performance of the inverter through experimental results.
