Development of a Multibody Dynamics Program Using the Object-Oriented Modeling

  • A multibody system dynamics analysis program is presented using one of the most useful programming methodologies, the object-oriented modeling, The object-oriented modeling defines a problem from the physical world as an abstract object. The object becomes encapsulated with the data and method, Analysis is performed using the object's interface, It is then possible for the user and the developer to modify and upgrade the program without having particular knowledge of the analysis program, The method presented in this paper has several advantages, Since the mechanical components of the multi-body system are converted into the class, the modification, exchange, distribution and reuse of classes are increased. It becomes easier to employ a new analysis method and interface with other S/W and H/W systems, Information can be communicated to each object through messaging. This makes the modeling of new classes easier using the inheritance, When developing a S/W for the computer simulation of a physical system, it is reasonable to use object-oriented modeling.

  • In this paper, the activity of Japanese researchers relating multibody dynamics is introduced. The author stayed at the CCR(Center for Collaborative Research) in the university of Tokyo as a visiting scholar during December 10, 2003 to March 9, 2004. The information obtained from several universities (University of Tokyo, Sophia university, Nihon university, Tsukuba university), several industries and research institutes (JR Central in Nagoya, Toyota Research Center in Nagoya., Subway department in Tokyo, and JARI at Tsukuba), several research groups (JSCM, JSME, JSAE) was summarized with several photos. Professor Yoshihiro Suda's laboratory at the university of Tokyo, professor Yoshiaki Terumichi's laboratory at the Sophia university, and professor Ichiro Kageyama's laboratory at the Nihon university are introduced.

EFFECT OF THE FLEXIBILITY OF AUTOMOTIVE SUSPENSION COMPONENTS IN MULTIBODY DYNAMICS SIMULATIONS

  • In this study, the effects of flexible bodies in vehicle suspension components were investigated to enhance the accuracy of multibody dynamic simulation results. Front and rear suspension components were investigated. Subframes, a stabilizer bar, a tie rod, a front lower control arm, a front knuckle, and front struts were selected. Reverse engineering techniques were used to construct a virtual vehicle model. Hard points and inertia data of the components were measured with surface scanning equipment. The mechanical characteristics of bushings and dampers were obtained from experiments. Reaction forces calculated from the multibody dynamics simulations were compared with test results at the ball joint of the lower control arm in both time-history and range-pair counting plots. Simulation results showed that the flexibility of the strut component had considerable influence on the lateral reaction force. Among the suspension components, the flexibility of the sub-frame, steering knuckle and upper strut resulted in better correlations with test results while the other flexible bodies could be neglected.

  • This study analyzes the dynamic response of a floating crane with a cargo considering an elastic boom to evaluate(or for evaluation of) its flexibility effect on their dynamic response. Flexible multibody system dynamics is applied in order to establish a dynamic equation of motion of the multibody system, which consists of flexible and rigid bodies. In addition, a floating reference frame and nodal coordinates are used to model the boom as a flexible body. The study also simulates the coupled surge, pitch, and heave motions of the floating crane carrying the cargo with three degrees of freedom by numerically solving the equation. Finally, the simulation results of the elastic and rigid booms are comparatively analyzed and the effects of the flexible boom are discussed.

평면 다물체 동역학 해석에서 GPU 병렬 프로그래밍의 계산효과 (Calculation Effect of GPU Parallel Programing for Planar Multibody System Dynamics)

  • In this paper, the equations of motions for planar multibody dynamics are established for considering the parallel programming based on GPU. Cartesian coordinates are used to formulate the equations of motion and implicit integration method called HHT-alpha is employed. Open chain multibody system is considered for computer simulation. CUDA toolkit is employed for establishing the GPU parallel programming. The exactness of the analysis is verified from the comparison with ADAMS. The results from parallel computing based on GPU are compared with the results from the sequential programming based on CPU in terms of calculation time. The multiple pendulum with bodies and joints is employed for the computer simulation. In the pendulum system that has 290 bodies, the parallel program indicates an improved efficiency of about 25.5 second(15.5% improvement). It is noted that the larger the size of system is, the time efficiency is better.

  • A flexible-rigid multibody analysis was pen armed to examine the dynamic response of a heavy handling robot system under a worst motion scenario. A rigid body dynamics analysis was solved and compared with flexible-rigid multibody analysis. The modal analysis and test were also carried out to establish the accuracy and the validation of the finite element model used in this paper. For the flexible-rigid multibody simulation, stresses in several major bodies were interested, so that those parts are flexible and other parts are modeled as rigid body in order to reduce computer resources.

  • This study deals with the method of determining the tip-over stability of a truck mounted on a high place operation car that is frequently used to carry out high-altitude work. Multibody Dynamics Program and Zero Moment Point (ZMP) theory are used to include dynamic effects during the car's high place operation. Through a combination of the Multibody Dynamics Program and ZMP, understanding the dynamic effects of the car's operating parts and building a detailed tip-over model of the car permitted a more precise prediction of the car's tipping-over behavior. It is also expected to help reduce the car's development time due to the time-effective simulation and provide safer work levels for the operating guide (in terms of working radius and lifting capability) with the dynamics effects.

  • It is important to predict the crash behavior of trains to improve their crashworthiness. This paper investigates the simulation of high-speed train crashes in three dimensions using multibody dynamics. At present, little is known about three-dimensional crash simulations. This study shows that it is possible to simulate overriding and lateral buckling, including results from one- or two-dimensional simulations. Several parameters, however, such as computational time and large deformation of structures, need further investigation.

  • In multibody dynamics, differential and algebraic equations which can satisfy both equation of motion and kinematic constraint equation should be solved. To solve these equations, coordinate partitioning method and constraint stabilization method are commonly used. In the coordinate partitioning method, the coordinates are divided into independent and dependent and coordinates. The most typical coordinate partitioning method are LU decomposition, QR decomposition, and SVD (singular value decomposition). The objective of this research is to find an efficient coordinate partitioning method in the dynamic analysis of flexible multibody systems. Comparing two coordinate partitioning methods, i.e. LU and QR decomposition in the flexible multibody systems, a new hybrid coordinate partitioning method is suggested for the flexible multibody analysis.

  • 많은 절점 자유도로 표현이 되는 유연다물체 시스템의 효율적인 해석을 위해서는 병렬처리 기법이 적용될 수 있다. 이 분야에서의 병렬처리기법은 주로 선형대수방정식의 효율적인 해법에 초점이 맞추어 연구가 진행되었다. 본 논문에서는 기존의 방법과는 달리 병렬처리에 적합한 유연다물체 동역학 공식을 부분 시스템 합성방법을 이용하여 개발하고, OpenMP를 사용한 효율적인 병렬처리 방식을 제안하였다. 서로 다른 두 가지 병렬처리 방식을 3개의 동일한 유연체 회전 날개 시스템 시뮬레이션 통하여 비교하였다. 또한 실제의 CPU시간을 비교하여 제안한 병렬처리 방법의 효율성을 고찰하였다.
