  • In this paper, a small internal antenna for a mobile handset is presented using multiband, wideband, and high-isolation multiple-input multiple-output techniques. The proposed antenna consists of three planar inverted-F antennas (PIFAs) that operate in the global system for mobile communication (GSM900), the digital communication system (DCS), the personal communication system (PCS), the universal mobile telecommunication system (UMTS), and wireless local area network (WLAN) bands with a physical size of $40mm{\times}10mm{\times}10mm$. A resonator attached to the folded PIFA creates dual resonances, achieving a wide bandwidth of approximately 460 MHz, covering the DCS, PCS, and UMTS bands; a meander shorting line is used to improve impedance matching. Additionally, a modified neutralization link is embedded between diversity antennas to enhance isolation, which results in a 6-dB improvement in the isolation and less than 0.1 in the envelope correlation coefficient evaluated from the far-field radiation patterns. Simulation and measurements demonstrate very similar results for S-parameters and radiation patterns. Peak gains show 3.73 dBi, 3.77 dBi, 3.28 dBi, 2.15 dBi, and 5.86 dBi, and antenna efficiencies show 56.15%, 72.15%, 68.59%, 52.92%, and 82.93% for GSM900, DCS, PCS, UMTS, and WLAN bands, respectively.

  • Energy detection is a widely used method for spectrum sensing in cognitive radios due to its simplicity and accuracy. However, it is severely affected by the noise uncertainty. To solve this problem, a blind multiband spectrum sensing scheme which is robust to noise uncertainty is proposed in this paper. The proposed scheme performs spectrum sensing over the total frequency channels simultaneously rather than a single channel each time. To improve the detection performance, the proposal jointly utilizes the likelihood function combined with Gerschgorin radii of unitary transformed covariance matrix. Unlike the conventional sensing methods, our scheme does not need any prior knowledge of noise power or PU signals, and thus is suitable for blind spectrum sensing. In addition, no subjective decision threshold setting is required in our scheme, making it robust to noise uncertainty. Finally, numerical results based on the probability of detection and false alarm versus SNR or the number of samples are presented to validate the performance of the proposed scheme.

  • In this paper, we proposed an internal multiband loop embedded monopole antenna for mobile handset that could be used for smart phones. The proposed antenna has a volume of 40 mm(W) ${\times}$ 15 mm(L) ${\times}$ 5 mm(H), ground plane size is 40 mm(W) ${\times}$ 80 mm(L), and covers the GSM900 (Global System for Mobile communications : 880-960 MHz), K-PCS (Korea-Personal Communications Service : 1750-1870 MHz), US-PCS (US Personal Communications Service : 1850-1990 MHz), WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access : 1920-2170 MHz), Wibro (2300-2390 MHz), Bluetooth (2400-2483 MHz) and WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network : 2400-2483.5 MHz) bands for VSWR (voltage standing wave ration) less than 3. The proposed loop adding design at middle section of longest branch showed wide impedance bandwidth for the lowest resonance frequency band. The proposed antenna have a lowest resonance frequency band from 738 MHz to 1075 MHz for S11 value of -6dB. A HFSS (High Frequency Structure Simulator) of the Ansys Corporation based on a finite element method is employed to analyze the proposed antenna in the design process and to compare the simulation and experimental results.

  • Nowadays, maritime communication systems need high data rate, reliability, and consistency in order to equivalently provide navigating ships with diverse multimedia services as in terrestrial communication systems. For this purpose, we conceptualize and design the maritime network for ships equipped with a multiband communication system which cost-effectively supports multimedia services according to several radiofrequency bands, such as HF, VHF, and satellite frequencies. We also introduce two service scenarios targeted for the maritime network; ship multimedia service (SMS) and real-time maritime logistics location tracking (RML2T). In addition, we specify related works according to three lower network layers (i.e., physical, data-link, and network layers) upon designing the network.

  • UWB, which is now in a process of being standardized in WPAN communication, has some problems such as difficulty of implementation and interference with existing systems. To overcome these problems we will explain the MIMO structure to alleviate difficulties of implementation. In this paper we propose the UWB transceiver structure using multiband scheme to mitigate narrow band interference from PCS Of WLAN which is widely used these days and analyze the effect of noise and narrow band interference by simulation based on numerical analysis.

  • This paper proposes a multiband Multi-Input Multi-output(MIMO) antenna for universal serial bus(USB) dongle application. The proposed MIMO antenna consists of a modified meander strip line and inverted L stub. The two radiating elements of the MIMO antenna are symmetrically placed with respect to the center of the ground plane. The fabricated antenna satisfied a VSWR below 3 and an efficiency over 35 % in the LTE band 13, 17(704 MHz-787 MHz), DCS/PCS/WCDMA band(1.71 GHz-2.17 GHz), and LTE band 7(2.5 GHz-2.7 GHz). The envelope correlation coefficient(ECC) has below 0.45 in the LTE band 13, 17 and 0.1 in the DCS/PCS/WCDMA band and LTE band 7, respectively.

  • In this paper, a multiband LTE antenna satisfying LTE octa-band is proposed. The proposed antenna consists of a modified PIFA structure and a folded monopole which has the height of 4 mm. Each parts operates at lower and upper LTE band. Measured bandwidth(6 dB return loss) was 118 MHz(870~988 MHz) at the lower band and 1,107 MHz(1,650~2,757 MHz) at the upper band. The proposed antenna has a omni-directional radiation pattern and measured peak gains were 3.21 dBi at the lower band and 4.19 dBi at the upper band, respectively. The proposed antenna is expected to be utilized for future LTE-advanced system.

  • Residual-ecited linear prediction vocoding is known to be one of the best approaches to speech coding in the range of 4.8 to 9.6 kbits/s. One problem associated with the RELP vocoder is that it often produces some roughness and tonal noise as the transmission rate becomes lower. In this paper, we investigate three methods to improve its quality. These include the multiband spectral folding method, the method of using both the spectrally folded signal and the pulsed ecitation signal, and the method of using both the multiband spectrally folded signal and the pulsed ecitation signal. It has been found that, among the three methods, the last one yields the best performance. It produces no roughness and little tonal noise.

  • This paper proposes a new active noise control (ANC) system for canceling broadband noise. The proposed ANC system is designed based on the multiband-structured delayless subband adaptive filter (MDSAF), which has advantages of fast-convergence speed and higher noise reduction performance by eliminating the aliasing and band-edge effects caused by band-partitioning. The simulation results show that the proposed ANC system has faster convergence speed as compared to the conventional ANC systems and effectively reduces the wideband noise.
