In typical, structural topology optimization plays a significant role to both increase stiffness and save mass of structures in the resulting design. This study contributes to a new numerical approach of topologically optimal design of Mindlin-Reissner plates considering Winkler foundation and mathematical formulations of multi-directional variable thickness of the plate by using multi-materials. While achieving optimal multi-material topologies of the plate with multi-directional variable thickness, the weight information of structures in terms of effective utilization of the material at the appropriate thickness location may be provided for engineers and designers of structures. Besides, numerical techniques of the well-established mixed interpolation of tensorial components 4 element (MITC4) is utilized to overcome a well-known shear locking problem occurring to thin plate models. The well-founded mathematical formulation of topology optimization problem with variable thickness Mindlin-Reissner plate structures by using multiple materials is derived in detail as one of main achievements of this article. Numerical examples verify that variable thickness Mindlin-Reissner plates on Winkler foundation have a significant effect on topologically optimal multi-material design results.

We study the problem of multiple response optimization (MRO) and focus on the selection of input levels which will produce desirable output quality. We propose an interactive multiple objective optimization approach to the input design. The earlier interactive methods utilized for MRO communicate with the decision maker only using the response variable values, in order to improve the current response values, thereby resulting in the corresponding design solution automatically. In their interaction steps of preference articulation, no account is taken of any active changes in design variable values. On the contrary, our approach permits the decision maker to change the design variable values in its interaction stage, which makes possible the consideration of the preference or economics of the design variable side. Using some typical value functions, we also demonstrate that our method converges reasonably well to the known optimal solutions.
Liquid metal heat pipes play a critical role in various high-temperature applications, with their optimization being pivotal to achieving optimal thermal performance. In this study, a deep learning based genetic algorithm is suggested to optimize the operating conditions of liquid metal heat pipes. The optimization performance was investigated in both single and multi-variable optimization schemes, considering the operating conditions of heat load, inclination angle, and filling ratio. The single-variable optimization indicated reasonable performance for various conditions, reinforcing the potential applicability of the optimization method across a broad spectrum of high-temperature industries. The multi-variable optimization revealed an almost congruent performance level to single-variable optimization, suggesting that the robustness of optimization method is not compromised with additional variables. Furthermore, the generalization performance of the optimization method was investigated by conducting an experimental investigation, proving a similar performance. This study underlines the potential of optimizing the operating condition of heat pipes, with significant consequences in sectors such as high temperature field, thereby offering a pathway to more efficient, cost-effective thermal solutions.
In this article, a simple and robust multi-objective assessment method to control design angles and node positions connected among steel outrigger truss members is proposed to approve both structural safety and economical cost. For given outrigger member layouts, the present method utilizes general-purpose prototypes of outrigger members, having resistance to withstand lateral load effects directly applied to tall buildings, which conform to variable connecting node and design space deposition. Outrigger layouts are set into several initial design conditions of height to width of an arbitrary given design space, i.e., variable design space. And then they are assessed in terms of a proposed multi-objective function optimizing both minimal total displacement and material quantity subjected to design impact factor indicating the importance of objectives. To evaluate the proposed multi-objective function, an analysis model uses a modified Maxwell-Mohr method, and an optimization model is defined by a ground structure assuming arbitrary discrete straight members. It provides a new robust assessment model from a local design point of view, as it may produce specific optimal prototypes of outrigger layouts corresponding to arbitrary height and width ratio of design space. Numerical examples verify the validity and robustness of the present assessment method for controlling prototypes of outrigger truss members considering a multi-objective optimization achieving structural safety and material cost.
This paper introduces a novel approach to multi-material topology optimization (MTO) targeting in-plane bi-directional functionally graded (IBFG) non-uniform thickness Reissner-Mindlin plates, employing an alternative active phase approach. The mathematical formulation integrates a first shear deformation theory (FSDT) to address compliance minimization as the objective function. Through an alternating active-phase algorithm in conjunction with the block Gauss-Seidel method, the study transforms a multi-phase topology optimization challenge with multi-volume fraction constraints into multiple binary phase sub-problems, each with a single volume fraction constraint. The investigation focuses on IBFG materials that incorporate adequate local bulk and shear moduli to enhance the precision of material interactions. Furthermore, the well-established mixed interpolation of tensorial components 4-node elements (MITC4) is harnessed to tackle shear-locking issues inherent in thin plate models. The study meticulously presents detailed mathematical formulations for IBFG plates in the MTO framework, underscored by numerous numerical examples demonstrating the method's efficiency and reliability.

This paper deals with a vehicle routing problem with resource repositioning (VRPRR) which is a variation of well-known vehicle routing problem with pickup and delivery (VRPPD). VRPRR in which static repositioning of public bikes is a representative case, can be defined as a multi-objective optimization problem aiming at minimizing both transportation cost and the amount of unmet demand. To obtain Pareto sets for the problem, famous multi-objective optimization algorithms such as Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm 2 (SPEA2) can be applied. In addition, a linear combination of two objective functions with weights can be exploited to generate Pareto sets. By varying weight values in the combined single objective function, a set of solutions is created. Experiments accomplished with a standard benchmark problem sets show that Variable Neighborhood Search (VNS) applied to solve a number of single objective function outperforms SPEA2. All generated solutions from SPEA2 are completely dominated by a set of VNS solutions. It seems that local optimization technique inherent in VNS makes it possible to generate near optimal solutions for the single objective function. Also, it shows that trade-off between the number of solutions in Pareto set and the computation time should be considered to obtain good solutions effectively in case of linearly combined single objective function.

Recently, multi-material structural topology optimization is more critical because it provides reasonable solution to weight reduction challenges and can as well provide effective conceptual design. For conventional multi-material topology optimization (MMTO), the number of design variable increases when the number of candidate materials increases, and accordingly, a significant increase in computational time occurs. Therefore, MMTO with a single design variable, such as the phase section method (PSM) was proposed. This research is focused on improving the PSM, considering three major limitations: the composition ratio does not represent the area or volume ratio, design variables are not sufficiently concentrated to target values, and certain materials are created less than they are required. To address such limitations, the redefined composition ratio and adjusted parameters for better convergence are proposed. The validation of proposed modifications is verified via two- and three-dimensional numerical examples.

In this paper, a multi-step optimization using a G.A. (Genetic Algorithm) with variable penalty function is introduced to the structural design optimization of a 5-head route machine. Our design procedure consist of two design optimization stage. The first stage of the design optimization is static design optimization. The following stage is dynamic design optimization stage. In the static optimization stage, the static compliance and weight of the structure are minimized simultaneously under some dimensional constraints and deflection limits. On the other hand, the dynamic compliance and the weight of the machine structure are minimized simultaneously in the dynamic design optimization stage. As the results, dynamic compliance of the 5-head router machine was decreased by about 37% and the weight of the structure was decreased by 4.48% respectively compared with the simplified structure model.
The design of multi-domain that considers all components of the electromagnetic systems such as air, iron, magnet, and coil is investigated using the topology optimization, interpolation method, and FEM. The design sensitivity equation for the topology optimization is derived using the adjoint variable method and the continuum approach. The proposed method is applied to the topology optimization of C-core actuator.
An efficient and high-fidelity design approach for wing-body shape optimization is presented. Depending on the size of design space and the number of design of variable, aerodynamic shape optimization process is carried out via different optimization strategies at each design stage. In the first stage, global optimization techniques are applied to planform design with a few geometric design variables. In the second stage, local optimization techniques are used for wing surface design with a lot of design variables to maintain a sufficient design space with a high DOF (Degree of Freedom) geometric change. For global optimization, Kriging method in conjunction with Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used. Asearching algorithm of EI (Expected Improvement) points is introduced to enhance the quality of global optimization for the wing-planform design. For local optimization, a discrete adjoint method is adopted. By the successive combination of global and local optimization techniques, drag minimization is performed for a multi-body aircraft configuration while maintaining the baseline lift and the wing weight at the same time. Through the design process, performances of the test models are remarkably improved in comparison with the single stage design approach. The performance of the proposed design framework including wing planform design variables can be efficiently evaluated by the drag decomposition method, which can examine the improvement of various drag components, such as induced drag, wave drag, viscous drag and profile drag.
