We demonstrate the preliminary results of ship detection application using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and automatic identification system (AIS) together. Multi-frequency and multi-temporal SAR images such as TerraSAR-X and Cosmo-SkyMed (X-band), and Radarsat-2 (C-band) are acquired over the West Sea in South Korea. In order to compare with SAR data, we also collected an AIS data. The SAR data are pre-processed considering by the characteristics of scattering mechanism as for sea surface. We proposed the "Adaptive Threshold Algorithm" for classification ship efficiently. The analyses using the combination of the SAR and AIS data with time series will be very useful to ship detection or tracing of the ship.
This paper demonstrates that RADARSAT ScanSAR data can be an important data source of radar remote sensing for monitoring crop systems and estimation of rice yield for large areas in tropic and sub-tropical regions. Experiments were carried out to show the effectiveness of RADARSAT ScanSAR data for rice yield estimation in whole province of Guangdong, South China. A methodology was developed to deal with a series of issues in extracting rice information from the ScanSAR data, such as topographic influences, levels of agro-management, irregular distribution of paddy fields and different rice cropping systems. A model was provided for rice yield estimation based on the relationship between the backscatter coefficient of multi-temporal SAR data and the biomass of rice.

This study demonstrates a novel approach of remotely sensed estimates of stream flow at fifteen hydrological station in the Han River Basin, Korea. Multi-temporal data of the European Space Agency's Sentinel-1 SAR satellite from 19 January, 2015 to 25 August, 2018 is used to develop and validate the flow estimation model for each station. The flow estimation model is based on a power law relationship established between the remotely sensed surface area of water at a selected reach of the stream and the observed discharge. The satellite images were pre-processed for thermal noise, radiometric, speckle and terrain correction. The difference in SAR image brightness caused by the differences in SAR satellite look angle and atmospheric condition are corrected using the histogram matching technique. Selective area filtering is applied to identify the extent of the selected stream reach where the change in water surface area is highly sensitive to the change in stream discharge. Following this, an iterative procedure called the Optimum Threshold Classification Algorithm (OTC) is applied to the multi-temporal selective areas to extract a series of water surface areas. It is observed that the extracted water surface area and the stream discharge are related by the power law equation. A strong correlation coefficient ranging from 0.68 to 0.98 (mean=0.89) was observed for thirteen hydrological stations, while at two stations the relationship was highly affected by the hydraulic structures such as dam. It is further identified that the availability of remotely sensed data for a range of discharge conditions and the geometric properties of the selected stream reach such as the stream width and side slope influence the accuracy of the flow estimation model.
The 3D DWT(The Three Dimensional Discrete Wavelet Transform) scheme is potentially regarded as useful one on analyzing both spatial and spectral information. Nevertheless, few researchers have attempted to process or classified remotely sensed images using the 3D DWT. This study aims to apply the 3D DWT to the land cover classification of optical and SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) images. Then, their results are evaluated quantitatively and compared with the results of traditional classification technique. As the experimental results, the 3D DWT shows superior classification results to conventional techniques, especially dealing with the high-resolution imagery and SAR imagery. It is thought that the 3D DWT scheme can be extended to multi-temporal or multi-sensor image classification.
In this paper, the interferometric coherence was estimated and the amplitude intensity was extracted using the repeat-pass interferometric data, acquired by European Remote Sensing Satellite 1 and 2. Then discrimination and classification of surface land types in Zhangjiakou test site, Hebei Province were carried out based on the coherence estimation and the intensity extraction. Seven types of land were discriminated and classified, including in two different types of meadows, woodland, dry land, grassland, steppe and water body. The backscatter and coherence characteristics of these land types on the multi-temporal images were analyzed, and the change of surface features with time series was also discussed.

As applications of spaceborne SAR imagery are extended, there are increased demands for accurate registrations for better understanding and fusion of radar images. It becomes common to adopt multi-resolution SAR images to apply for wide area reconnaissance. Geometric correction of the SAR images can be performed by using satellite orbit and attitude information. However, the inherent errors of the SAR sensor's attitude and ground geographical data tend to cause geometric errors in the produced SAR image. These errors should be corrected when the SAR images are applied for multi-temporal analysis, change detection applications and image fusion with other sensor images. The undesirable ground registration errors can be corrected with respect to the true ground control points in order to produce complete SAR products. Speeded Up Robust Feature (SURF) technique is an efficient algorithm to extract ground control points from images but is considered to be inappropriate to apply to SAR images due to high speckle noises. In this paper, an attempt is made to apply SURF algorithm to SAR images for image registration and fusion. Matched points are extracted with respect to the varying parameters of Hessian and SURF matching thresholds, and the performance is analyzed by measuring the imaging matching accuracies. A number of performance measures concerning image registration are suggested to validate the use of SURF for spaceborne SAR images. Various simulations methodologies are suggested the validate the use of SURF for the geometric correction and image registrations and it is shown that a good choice of input parameters to the SURF algorithm should be made to apply for the spaceborne SAR images of moderate resolutions.
We have developed a new method to visualize river networks in tropical rain forests from JERS-1 SAR images. This method compresses river information in an original SAR image to a small image displaying wide rivers as dark objects in real size and narrower rivers as bright objects showing brightness level as an indicator of the discharge. We applied this method to 476 images of Amazon forests, 13 observations for path 415 data and 11 observations for path 416 data between 1993 and 1997. We confirmed that a change observed in a preliminary experiment was certainly a part of seasonal changes. The changes roughly correspond to the monthly precipitation changes. Through a simple digital analysis although qualitative, we also detected subtle but consistent regional differences among minor tributaries that belong to a major tributary basin.
SAR image is not dependent on the weather condition and Sun's electromagnetic energy. But geometric distortions exist in almost all radar image, it need to be correction. The Radarsat-1 SAR images are used to monitoring of moisture acquired in May 1/1998 and May 25/1998. Radarsat-1 C band data is sensitive on moisture condition. Study area is located in Non-san site. It is made up almost agricultural area and a little of forest area. In May, Rice-planting is started in the midland of Korea. So moisture condition is undergoing many changes. Forest area need to be terrain effect removal for accurately results because it is included in layover, shadow, and so on. Results of land-cover moisture condition map are useful tool for fields of agriculture, forestry industry, and disaster.

Using multi-sensor or multi-temporal high resolution satellite images together is essential for efficient applications in remote sensing area. The purpose of this paper is to estimate geometric difference of translations between high-resolution optical and SAR images automatically. The geometric and radiometric pre-processing steps were fulfilled to calculate the similarity between optical and SAR images by using Mutual Information method. The coarsest-level pyramid images of each sensor constructed by gaussian pyramid method were generated to estimate the initial translation difference of the x, y directions for calculation efficiency. The precise geometric difference of translations was able to be estimated by applying this method from coarsest-level pyramid image to original image in order. Yet even when considered only translation between optical and SAR images, the proposed method showed RMSE lower than 5m in all study sites.
This study was begun to classify the paddy fields by the rice varieties and to monitor the temporal change in rice growth using SAR backscatter coefficients $({\sigma}^{circ})$. For nine fine-beam mode images of Radarsat-1 SAR, a growing period time-series of backscatter coefficients was set up from April to October in 2005, and was compared with the field-measured rice growth parameters such as LAI (leaf area index), plant height, fresh and dry biomass, and water content in grain and plant for 45 parcels in Dangjin-gun, Chungcheongnam Province, South Korea. The average backscatter coefficients for early-maturing rice varieties (13 parcels) were ranged from -18.17dB to -6.06dB and were lower than for medium-late maturing rice varieties during most of the growing season. At around the heading stage (July 30) for early-maturing rice, both rice crops showed the highest backscatter coefficient values and the difference was the greatest before harvesting early-maturing rice. The temporal difference in backscatter coefficients between rice varieties was expected to play a key role to identify early-maturing rice fields. On the other hand, comparison with field-measured rice growth parameters showed that the backscatter coefficients decreased or stayed on the plateau after heading stage even though the growth of rice canopy advanced.
