  • Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-5 (KOMPSAT-5) is the first satellite in Korea that provides 1 m resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. Precise orbit determination (POD) using a dual-frequency IGOR receiver data is performed to conduct high-resolution SAR images. We suggest orbit determination strategies based on a differential GPS technique. Double-differenced phase observations are sampled every 30 seconds. A dynamic model approach using an estimation of general empirical acceleration every 6 minutes through a batch least-squares estimator is applied. The orbit accuracy is validated using real data from GRACE and KOMPSAT-2 as well as simulated KOMPSAT-5 data. The POD results using GRACE satellite are adjusted through satellite laser ranging data and compared with publicly available reference orbit data. Operational orbit determination satisfies 5 m root sum square (RSS) in one sigma, and POD meets the orbit accuracy requirements of less than 20 cm and 0.003 cm/s RSS in position and velocity, respectively.

  • To date the KOMPSAT OSMI(Ocean Scanning Multi-spectral Imager) data have been widely used in natural disaster monitoring such as Typhoon, Asian Dust, Red Tide, and Forest Fire. Quantitative analyses related to the marine ecosystem have been delayed because they require good quality of data through Cal/Val activities. To resolve such problem, KARI performed the OSMI crosscalibration study with SeaWiFS team. In this study, we will demonstrate the OSMI ocean color products with updated cross-calibration coefficients and compare them to the previous cross-calibration results.

  • No doubt that more vast data and precise values are required for the detailed and accurate analysis result. People's expectation for the output of space application goes higher, and consequently satellite memory system has to process massive data faster. This paper reviews memory systems of KOMPSAT (Korea Multi-Purpose SATellite) series and try to find a suitable memory system structure to process data more faster not at device level but at system level.

  • To retrieve Sea Surface Temperature(SST) from NOAA-AVHRR imagery the spilt window atmospheric correction algorithm is generally used. Recently, there have been various new algorithms developed to process these data, namely the variable-coefficient split-window, the R54 transmittance-ratio method, fixed-coefficient nonlinear algorithm, dynamic water vapour (DWV) correction method, Dynamic Water Vapour and Temperature algorithm (DWVT). We used MCSST (Multi-Channel Sea surface temperature) and NLSST(Non linear sea surface temperature) algorithms in this study. The study area is around the Korea sea area (Yellow Sea). We compared and analyzed with various methods by applying each Ocean in-situ data and satellite data. The primary aim of study is to verify and optimize algorithms. Finally, this study proposes an optimized algorithm for SST retrieval.

  • SIMP is an international project funded by INTAS aimed at improving the information content, which can be inferred from multi-sensor satellite imagery of marine coastal areas. Scientific teams from Germany, UK, Portugal, and Russia focus on the development of novel tools for marine remote sensing of the coastal zone. In particular, the project teams' benefit from the fact that surface films may enhance the signatures of hydrodynamic processes such as plumes, internal waves, eddies, etc., on microwave, optical, and infrared imagery. The project's objectives are to develop a robust methodology for identifying slick-related phenomena/processes through their surface signatures and thereby, to improve the discrimination capabilities between slicks and other oceanic and atmospheric phenomena by taking into account information gained from satellite imagery quasi-simultaneously recorded at microwave, visible and IR wavelengths. The results of the two project years are summarized. Examples are given for the project’s web presentation, laboratory and field experiments, and of the analyses of various satellite data.

  • A multi-spot-beam satellite is an attractive technique for future satellite communications since it can support high data rates by projecting high power density to each spot beam and can reuse a frequency in different cells to increase the total system capacity. In this letter, we propose a resource management technique adjusting the bandwidth of each beam to minimize the difference between the traffic demand and allocated capacity. This represents a reasonable solution for dynamic bandwidth allocation, considering a trade-off between the maximum total capacity and fairness among the spot beams with different traffic demands.

  • Satellite imagery may contain large regions covered with atmospheric aerosol. A high-resolution satellite imagery affected by non-homogenous aerosol cover should be processed for land cover study and perform the radiometric calibration that will allow its future application for Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite (KOMPSAT) data. In this study, aerosol signal was separated from high resolution satellite data based on the reflectance separation method. Since aerosol removal has a good sensitivity over bright surface such as man-made targets, aerosol optical thickness (AOT) retrieval algorithm could be used. AOT retrieval using Look-up table (LUT) approach for utilizing the transformed image to radiometrically compensate visible band imagery is processed and tested in the correction of satellite scenery. Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), EO-1/HYPERION data have been used for aerosol correction and AOT retrieval with different spatial resolution. Results show that an application of the aerosol detection for HYPERION data yields successive aerosol separation from imagery and AOT maps are consistent with MODIS AOT map.

  • The western coast of South Korea is famous for its large and broad tidal lands. Nevertheless, land reclamation, which has been conducted on a large scale, such as Sihwa embankment construction project has accelerated coastal environmental changes in the embankment inland. For monitoring of environmental change, vegetation change detecting of the embankment inland were carried out and field survey data compared with Landsat TM, ETM+, IKONOS, and EOC satellite remotely sensed data. In order to utilize multi-temporal remotely sensed images effectively, all data set with pixel size were analyzed by same geometric correction method. To detect the tidal land vegetation change, the spectral characteristics and spatial resolution of Landsat TM and ETM+ images were analyzed by SMA(spectral mixture analysis). We obtained the 78.96% classification accuracy and Kappa index 0.2376 using March 2000 Landsat data. The SMA(spectral mixture analysis) results were considered with comparing of vegetation seasonal change detection method.

  • A radiometric correction method is developed to apply multi-temporal KOMPSAT-1 EOC satellite images for the detection of land-cover changes b\ulcorner recognizing changes in reflection pattern. Radiometric correction was carried out to eliminate the atmospheric effects that could interfere with the image properly of the satellite data acquired at different multi-times. Four invariant features of water, sand, paved road, and roofs of building are selected and a linear regression relationship among the control set images is used as a correction scheme. It is found that the utilization of panchromatic multi-temporal imagery requires the radiometric scene standardization process to correct radiometric errors that include atmospheric effects and digital image processing errors. Land-cover with specific change pattern such as paddy field is extracted by seasonal change recognition process.
