  • The West Philippine Basin, an oceanic basin half the size of the Philippine Sea Plate, lies in the western part of the plate and south of the Korean Peninsula on the Eurasian Plate. It subducts beneath the Eurasian Plate and the Philippine Islands bordering the Ryukyu Trench and the Philippine Trench with 25-50% of this basin already consumed. However, the history of the opening of the basin's southern region has been a topic of debate. The non-transform discontinuity formed during the seafloor spreading is similar to the transform fault boundaries normally perpendicular to mid-ocean ridge axes; however, it was created irregularly due to ridge propagations caused by variations of mantle convection attributable to magma supply changes. By analyzing high-resolution multi-beam echo-sounding data, we confirmed that the non-transform discontinuity due to the propagating rift evolved in the entire basin and that the abyssal hill strike direction changed from E-W to NNW-SSE from the fossil spreading center. In the early stage of basin extension, the Amami-Sankaku Basin was rotated 90 degrees clockwise from its current orientation, and it bordered the Palau Basin along the Mindanao Fracture Zone. The Amami-Sankaku Basin separated from the Palau Basin while the spreading of the West Philippine Basin began with a counter-clockwise rotation. This indicates that the non-transform discontinuities formed by a sudden change in magma supply due to the drift of the Philippine Sea Plate and simultaneously with the rapid changes in the spreading direction from ENE-WSW to N-S. The Palau Basin was considered to be the sub-south of the West Philippine Basin, but recent studies have shown that it extends into an independent system. Evidence from sediment layers and crustal thickness hints at the possibility of its existence before the West Philippine Basin opened, although its evolution continues to be debated. We performed a combined analysis using high-resolution multi-beam bathymetry and satellite gravity data to uncover new insights into the evolution of the West Philippine Basin. This information illuminates the complex plate interactions and provides a crucial contribution toward understanding the opening history of the basin and the Philippine Sea Plate.

  • The strain data acquired from structural health monitoring (SHM) systems play an important role in the state monitoring and damage identification of bridges. Due to the environmental complexity of civil structures, a better understanding of the actual strain data will help filling the gap between theoretical/laboratorial results and practical application. In the study, the multi-scale features of strain response are first revealed after abundant investigations on the actual data from two typical long-span bridges. Results show that, strain types at the three typical temporal scales of $10^5$, $10^2$ and $10^0$ sec are caused by temperature change, trains and heavy trucks, and have their respective cut-off frequency in the order of $10^{-2}$, $10^{-1}$ and $10^0$ Hz. Multi-resolution analysis and wavelet shrinkage are applied for separating and extracting these strain types. During the above process, two methods for determining thresholds are introduced. The excellent ability of wavelet transform on simultaneously time-frequency analysis leads to an effective information extraction. After extraction, the strain data will be compressed at an attractive ratio. This research may contribute to a further understanding of actual strain data of long-span bridges; also, the proposed extracting methodology is applicable on actual SHM systems.

  • This paper describes a method for the detection of shorted-turn in the cylindrical synchronous generator rotor windings based on the discrete wavelet transform. Multi-resolution analysis(MRA) based on discrete wavelet transform provides a set of decomposed signals in independent frequency bands, which contain independent dynamic information due to the orthogonality of wavelet function. In the proposed method, shorted-turn detection in rotor windings is based on the decomposition of the rotor currents, where wavelet coefficients of these signals have been extracted. Comparing these extracted coefficients is used for diagnosing the healthy machine from faulty machine. Experimental results are presented for healthy, and machines with 25%, 42%, 67%, 83%, 99% inter-turn short circuits in a rotor slot. Deviation of wavelet coefficients in healthy mode from faulty modes depicts the inverse proportion of shorted-turns. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method for shorted-turn detection in the cylindrical synchronous generator rotor windings.

  • The first reduction peak of the cyclic voltammogram (CV) for sulfur reduction in dimethyl sulfoxide has been studied using time resolved Fourier transform electrochemical impedance spectroscopic (FTEIS) analysis of small potential step chronoamperometric currents. The FTEIS analysis results reveal that the impedance signals obtained during short potential steps can be resolved into electron transfer reactions of two different time constants in a high frequency region. The FTEIS method provides snap shots of impedance profiles during an earlier phase of the reaction, leading to time resolved EIS measurements. Our results obtained by the FTEIS analysis are consistent with a series of electron transfer and chemical equilibrium steps of a complex reaction, making up an ECE (electrochemical-chemical-electrochemical) mechanism postulated from the results of computer simulation.

  • The classification of the speech-sound block comes from the multi-resolution analysis property of the discrete wavelet transform, which is used to reduce the computational time for the pre-processing of speech recognition. The merging algorithm is proposed to extract vapid speech-sounds in terms of position and frequency range. It performs unvoiced/voiced classification and denoising. Since the merging algorithm can decide the processing parameters relating to voices only and is independent of system noises, it is useful for extracting valid speech-sounds. The merging algorithm has an adaptive feature for arbitrary system noises and an excellent denoising signal-to-noise ratio and a useful system tuning for the system implementation.

  • The discrete wavelet transform (DWT) has good multi-resolution decomposition characteristic and its low frequency component contains the basic information of an image. Based on this, a fragile watermarking using the local binary pattern (LBP) and DWT is proposed for image authentication. In this method, the LBP pattern of low frequency wavelet coefficients is adopted as a feature watermark, and it is inserted into the least significant bit (LSB) of the maximum pixel value in each block of host image. To guarantee the safety of the proposed algorithm, the logistic map is applied to encrypt the watermark. In addition, the locations of the maximum pixel values are stored in advance, which will be used to extract watermark on the receiving side. Due to the use of DWT, the watermarked image generated by the proposed scheme has high visual quality. Compared with other state-of-the-art watermarking methods, experimental results manifest that the proposed algorithm not only has lower watermark payloads, but also achieves good performance in tamper identification and localization for various attacks.

  • Discrimination of music and speech from the multimedia signal is an important task in audio coding and broadcast monitoring systems. This paper deals with the problem of feature parameter extraction for discrimination of music and speech. The wavelet transform is a multi-resolution analysis method that is useful for analysis of temporal and spectral properties of non-stationary signals such as speech and audio signals. We propose new feature parameters extracted from the wavelet transformed signal for discrimination of music and speech. First, wavelet coefficients are obtained on the frame-by-frame basis. The analysis frame size is set to 20 ms. A parameter $E_{sum}$ is then defined by adding the difference of magnitude between adjacent wavelet coefficients in each scale. The maximum and minimum values of $E_{sum}$ for period of 2 seconds, which corresponds to the discrimination duration, are used as feature parameters for discrimination of music and speech. To evaluate the performance of the proposed feature parameters for music and speech discrimination, the accuracy of music and speech discrimination is measured for various types of music and speech signals. In the experiment every 2-second data is discriminated as music or speech, and about 93% of music and speech segments have been successfully detected.

  • In order to overcome many defects in the current JPEG standard of still image compression, the new JPEG2000 standard has been development. The JPEG2000 standard is based on the principles of DWT and EBCOT Entropy Coding. EBCOT(Embedded block coding with optimized truncation) is the most important technology in the latest image-coding standard, JPEG2000. However, EBCOT occupies the highest computation time to operate bit-level processing. Therefore, many researches have achieved methods to minimize computation speed of EBCOT. Thus, this paper proposes the method of context-extraction that improves computational architecture. This paper proposes efficient context coding method. The proposed algorithm would apply to hard-wired JPEG2000 Encoder that is used for compression of high resolution image.

  • The hybrid coding algorithm for multi-spectral image obtained from satellite is discussed. As the spatial and spectral resolution of satellite image are rapidly increasing, there are enormous amounts of data to be processed for computer processing and data transmission. Therefore an efficient coding algorithm is essential for multi-spectral image processing. In this paper, VQ(vector quantization), quadtree decomposition, and DCT(discrete cosine transform) are combined to compress the multi-spectral image. VQ is employed for predictive coding by using the fact that each band of multi-spectral image has the same spatial feature, and DCT is for the compression of residual image. Moreover, the image is decomposed into quadtree structure in order to allocate the data bit according to the information content within the image block to improve the coding efficiency. Computer simulation on Landsat TM image shows the validity of the proposed coding algorithm.

  • We set up a project to make spectrometers for single dish observations of the Korean VLBI Network (KVN), a new future multi-beam receiver of the ASTE (Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment), and the total power (TP) antennas of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Traditionally, spectrometers based on ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated circuit) and FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) have been used in radio astronomy. It is, however, that a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) technology is now viable for spectrometers due to the rapid improvement of its performance. A high-resolution spectrometer should have the following functions: poly-phase filter, data-bit conversion, fast Fourier transform, and complex multiplication. We wrote a program based on CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) for a GPU spectrometer. We measured its performance using two GPU cards, Titan X and K40m, from NVIDIA. A non-optimized GPU code can process a data stream of around 2 GHz bandwidth, which is enough for the KVN spectrometer and promising for the ASTE and ALMA TP spectrometers.
