For the analysis of a two-phase flow, the interaction between two phases such as the interfacial momentum or heat transfer is proportional to the interfacial area. So the interfacial area concentration (IAC) is one of the most important parameters governing the behavior of each phase. This study focuses on the development of a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code for investigating a boiling flow with a one-group IAC transport equation. It was based on the two-fluid model and governing equations were calculated by SMAC algorithm. For checking the robustness of the developed code, the experiment of a subcooled boiling in a vertical annulus channel was analyzed to validate the capability of the IAC transport equation. As the results, the developed code was confirmed to have the capability in predicting multi-dimensional phenomena of vapor generation and propagation in a subcooled boiling.
First, methods of numerical analysis of gas-particle flows is classified into micro, meso and macro scale approaches based on the concept of multi-scale mechanics. Next, the explanation moves on to discrete particle simulation where motion of individual particles is calculated numerically using the Newtonian equations of motion. The author focuses on the cases where particle-to-particle interaction has significant effects on the phenomena. Concerning the particle-to-particle interaction, two cases are considered: the one is collision-dominated flows and the other is the contact-dominated flows. To treat this interaction mathematically, techniques named DEM(Distinct Element Method) or DSMC (Direct Simulation Monte Carlo) have been developed DEM, which has been developed in the field of soil mechanics, is useful for the contact -dominated flows and DSMC method, developed in molecular gas flows, is for the collision-dominated flows. Combining DEM or DSMC with CFD (computer fluid dynamics), the discrete particle simulation becomes a more practical tool for industrial flows because not only the particle-particle interaction but particle-fluid interaction can be handled. As examples of simulations, various results are shown, such as hopper flows, particle segregation phenomena, particle mixing in a rotating drum, dense phase pneumatic conveying, spouted bed, dense phase fluidized bed, fast circulating fluidized bed and so on.

Electrical power distribution systems are critical links between the utility and customer. In general, power distribution systems have unbalanced feeders due to the unbalanced loading. The devices that dependent on balanced three phase supply are affected by the unbalanced feeders. This necessitates the balancing of feeders. The main objective of reconfiguration is to balance the loads among the phases subject to constraints such as load flow equations, capacity and voltage constraints and to reduce the real power loss, while subject to a radial network structure in which all loads must be energized. Therefore, the distribution system reconfiguration problem has been viewed as multi-objective problem. In this paper, the hybrid heuristic algorithm has been used for reconfiguration, which is the combination of fuzzy and greedy algorithms. The purpose of the introduction of greedy is to refrain the searching for the period of phase balancing. The incorporation of fuzzy helps to take up more objectives amid phase balancing in the searching. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through modified IEEE 33 bus and modified IEEE 125 bus radial distribution system.
In this paper we describe current activities on the project Multi-Scale Modeling and Analysis of convective boiling (MSMA), conducted jointly by the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) and the Swiss Nuclear Utilities (Swissnuclear). The long-term aim of the MSMA project is to formulate improved closure laws for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations for prediction of convective boiling and eventually of the Critical Heat Flux (CHF). As boiling is controlled by the competition of numerous phenomena at various length and time scales, a multi-scale approach is employed to tackle the problem at different scales. In the MSMA project, the scales on which we focus range from the CFD scale (macro-scale), bubble size scale (meso-scale), liquid micro-layer and triple interline scale (micro-scale), and molecular scale (nano-scale). The current focus of the project is on micro- and meso-scales modeling. The numerical framework comprises a highly efficient, parallel DNS solver, the PSI-BOIL code. The code has incorporated an Immersed Boundary Method (IBM) to tackle complex geometries. For simulation of meso-scales (bubbles), we use the Constrained Interpolation Profile method: Conservative Semi-Lagrangian $2^{nd}$ order (CIP-CSL2). The phase change is described either by applying conventional jump conditions at the interface, or by using the Phase Field (PF) approach. In this work, we present selected results for flows in complex geometry using the IBM, selected bubbly flow simulations using the CIP-CSL2 method and results for phase change using the PF approach. In the subsequent stage of the project, the importance of effects of nano-scale processes on the global boiling heat transfer will be evaluated. To validate the models, more experimental information will be needed in the future, so it is expected that the MSMA project will become the seed for a long-term, combined theoretical and experimental program.
This paper presents a new approach regarding thermal characteristics associated with a design of the high efficiency motor. The adjoint variable design sensitivity equations for both electromagnetics with respect to permeability and heat transfer considering conduction and convection terms are derived using the continuum method. For multi-objective topology optimization, FEA is validated in terms of electromagnetics and heat transfer by experiments. The proposed method is applied to a single-phase induction motor of the scroll compressor in order to control the direction of heat flow by maximizing/minimizing the temperature of the target area while maintaining the efficiency.
The non-conservative form of momentum equations is often used for some two-phase flow codes instead of a conservative form because of numerical convenience. Another non-conservative form, so called, a semi-conservative form can improve the numerical solution of these codes maintaining the numerical convenience. It is close to the conservative form but still maintains the feature of the non-conservative form. A semi-conservative form of the momentum equations and a non-conservative form of the momentum equations are implemented in CUPID[1] code. The numerical results of the semi-conservative and the non-conservative forms are compared against analytical solutions and the solutions of the FLUENT code that uses the conservative form. The results clearly showed that the semi-conservative form of the momentum equations provides better solutions than the non-conservative form, especially for heterogeneous two-phase flows.
Feedwater heaters of many nuclear power plants have recently experienced severe wall thinning damage, which will increase as operating time progresses. Several nuclear power plants in Korea have experienced wall thinning damage in the area around the impingement baffle inside feedwater heater installed downstream of the turbine extraction stream line. At that point, the extract steam from the turbine is two phase fluid at high temperature, high pressure, and high speed. Since it flows to reverse direction after impinging the impingement baffle, the shell wall of feedwater heaters may be affected by flow-accelerated corrosion. In this paper, to compare degree of shell wall thinning mitigation rate to squared type with mitigation rate of other type baffle plate, four different types of impingement baffle plate-squared, curved, mitigating type and multi-hole type-applied inside the shell. With these comparison data, this paper describes operation of experiments and numerical analysis which is composed similar condition with real feed water heater. And flow visualization is operated for verification of experiments and numerical analysis. In conclusion, this study shows that mitigating type and multi-hole type baffle plate are more effective than other baffle plate about prevention of pressure concentration and pressure value decrease.
Development of a more satisfactory program of computing the performance on a multi-tube evaporator with continuous plate fins is attempted in this study. The fluid flow involving a change of phase make the flow properties and fluid friction factor of refrigerants, the heat transfer coefficients of refrigerant and air sides vary significantly. Taking such variations into account, a useful program is developed to predict the steady state performance of a multi-tube evaporator. The program was applied to an evaporator which has outside diameter of 10.05mm, inside diameter of 9.35mm, length of 5.4m and two rows arraied staggered. Then the variations of refrigerant quality, temperature, pressure, velocity, enthalpy, specific volume and air temperature, tube temperature were discussed. Satisfactory results were presented that the degree of superheat at the outlet side was $4.4^{\circ}C$ and the air temperature drop between the inlet and outlet of the air conditioner was $10^{\circ}C$.
The standard drag force and virtual mass force, which exert to the primary flow direction, are generally considered in two-phase analysis computational codes. In this paper, the lift force, wall lubrication force, and turbulent dispersion force including turbulence models, which are essential for a computational multi-fluid dynamics model and play an important role in motion perpendicular to the primary flow direction, were introduced and verified with conceptual problems.
