Composite steel-concrete box girders are frequently used in bridge construction for their economic and structural advantages. An integrated metaheuristic based optimization procedure is proposed for discrete size optimization of straight multi-span steel box girders with the objective of minimizing the self-weight of girder. The metaheuristic algorithm of choice is the Cuckoo Search (CS) algorithm. The optimum design of a box girder is characterized by geometry, serviceability and ultimate limit states specified by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). Size optimization of a practical design example investigates the efficiency of this optimization approach and leads to around 15% of saving in material.

In this article, the multi-objective optimization of cylindrical aluminum tubes under axial impact load is presented. The specific absorbed energy and the maximum crushing force are considered as objective functions. The geometric dimensions of tubes including diameter, length and thickness are chosen as design variables. D/t and L/D ratios are constricted in the range of which collapsing of tubes occurs in concertina or diamond mode. The Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II is applied to obtain the Pareto optimal solutions. A back-propagation neural network is constructed as the surrogate model to formulate the mapping between the design variables and the objective functions. The finite element software ABAQUS/Explicit is used to generate the training and test sets for the artificial neural networks. To validate the results of finite element model, several impact tests are carried out using drop hammer testing machine.
The submerged floating tunnel (SFT) infrastructure has been regarded as an emerging technology that efficiently and safely connects land and islands. The SFT route problem is an essential part of the SFT planning and design phase, with significant impacts on the surrounding environment. This study aims to develop an optimization model considering transportation and structure factors. The SFT routing problem was optimized based on two objective functions, i.e., minimizing total travel time and cumulative strains, using NSGA-II. The proposed model was applied to the section from Mokpo to Jeju Island using road network and wave observation data. As a result of the proposed model, a Pareto optimum curve was obtained, showing a negative correlation between the total travel time and cumulative strain. Based on the inflection points on the Pareto optimum curve, four optimal SFT routes were selected and compared to identify the pros and cons. The travel time savings of the four selected alternatives were estimated to range from 9.9% to 10.5% compared to the non-implemented scenario. In terms of demand, there was a substantial shift in the number of travel and freight trips from airways to railways and roadways. Cumulative strain, calculated based on SFT distance, support structure, and wave energy, was found to be low when the route passed through small islands. The proposed model helps decision-making in the planning and design phases of SFT projects, ultimately contributing to the progress of a safe, efficient, and sustainable SFT infrastructure.
In this study, a method for optimal design of impeller shroud for centrifugal compressor using response surface method (RSM) and multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) was studied. Numerical simulation was conducted using ANSYS CFX with various configurations of shroud. Each of the design parameters was divided into 3 levels. Total 15 design points were planned by central composite design (CCD) method, which is one of the design of experiment (DOE) techniques. Response surfaces based on the results of DOE were used to find the optimal shape of impeller shroud for high aerodynamic performance. The whole process of optimization was conducted using ANSYS Design Xplorer (DX). Results showed that the isentropic efficiency, which is the main performance parameter of the centrifugal compressor, was increased 0.4% through the optimization.
The uncertainties involved in structural performances are of importance when the optimum number and property of seismic retrofit devices are determined. This paper proposes a seismic retrofit design framework for asymmetric soft-first-story buildings, considering uncertainties in the soil condition and seismic retrofit device. The effect of the uncertain parameters on the structural performance is used to find a robust and optimal seismic retrofit solution. The framework finds a robust and optimal seismic retrofit solution by finding the optimal locations and mechanical properties of the seismic retrofit device for different realizations of the uncertain parameters. The structural performance for each realization is computed to evaluate the effect of the uncertainty parameters on the seismic performance. The framework utilizes parallel processing to decrease the computationally intensive nonlinear dynamic analysis time. The framework returns a robust design solution that satisfies the given limit state for every realization of the uncertain parameters. The proposed framework is applied to the seismic retrofit design of a five-story asymmetric soft-first-story case study structure retrofitted with a viscoelastic damper. Robust optimal parameters for retrofitting a structure to satisfy the limit state for the different realizations of the uncertain parameter are found using the proposed framework. According to the performance evaluation results of the retrofitted structure, the developed framework is proved effective in the seismic retrofit of the asymmetric structure with inherent uncertainties.
By having accurate knowledge of the magnetic field distribution and the thrust calculation in linear synchronous motors, assessing the performance and optimization of the motor design are possible. In this paper, after carrying out a performance analysis of a single-sided wound secondary linear synchronous motor by varying the motor design parameters in a layer model and a d-q model, machine single- and multi-objective design optimizations are carried out to improve the thrust density of the motor based on the motor weight and the motor efficiency multiplied by its power factor by defining various objective functions including a flexible objective function. A genetic algorithm is employed to search for the optimal design. The results confirm that an overall improvement in the thrust mean, efficiency multiplied by the power factor, and thrust to the motor weight ratio are obtained. Several design conclusions are drawn from the motor analysis and the design optimization. Finally, a finite element analysis is employed to evaluate the effectiveness of the employed machine models and the proposed optimization method.

In this paper, an intelligent method called BELBIC (Brain Emotional Learning Based Intelligent Controller) is used to control of Locally Linear Neuro-Fuzzy Model (LOLIMOT) of Washing Machine. The Locally Linear Neuro-Fuzzy Model of Washing Machine is obtained based on previously extracted data. One of the important issues in using BELBIC is its parameters setting. On the other hand, the controller design for Washing Machine is a multi objective problem. Indeed, the two objectives, energy consumption and effectiveness of washing process, are main issues in this problem, and these two objectives are in contrast. Due to these challenges, a Multi Objective Genetic Algorithm is used for tuning the BELBIC parameters. The algorithm provides a set of non-dominated set points rather than a single point, so the designer has the advantage of selecting the desired set point. With considering the proper parameters after using additional assumptions, the simulation results show that this controller with optimal parameters has very good performance and considerable saving in energy consumption.
In this paper, a multi-object optimization based on a progressive quadratic response surface method (PQRSM) and a time stepping finite element method (FEM) is proposed. The new PQRSM and FEM are able to decide optimal geometric and electric variables of the switched reluctance motor (SRM) with two objective functions: torque ripple minimization and average torque maximization. The result of the optimum design for SRM show an improved performance of motor and a relationship between torque ripple and average torque.
With increasing competition, the engineering industry is in need of optimization of designs that would lead to minimum cost or weight. Recent developments in Genetic Algorithms (GAs) makes it possible to model and obtain optimal solutions in structural design that can be put to use in industry. The main objective of this paper is to illustrate typical applications of GAs to practical design of structural systems such as steel trusses, towers, bridges, reinforced concrete frames, bridge decks, shells and layout planning of buildings. Hence, instead of details of GA process, which can be found in the reported literature, attention is focussed on the description of the various applications and the practical aspects that are considered in Genetic Modeling. The paper highlights scope and future directions for wider applications of GA based methodologies for optimal design in practice.
This paper presents a multi-objective optimal design process for an in-wheel permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) for high performance. In order to improve the characteristics of the PMSM such as the cogging torque, torque ripple and the back-EMF, the modified Taguchi method and the response surface method (RSM) are utilized. In addition, results of the proposed model are compared with the initial design and it is verified by 2D FEM.
