Numerical design optimization techniques are implemented for the improvement of the ram accelerator performance. The design object is to find the minimum ram tube length required to accelerate projectile from initial velocity $V_0$ to target velocity $V_e$. The premixture is composed of $H_2,\;O_2,\;N_2$ and the mole numbers of these species are selected as design variables. The objective function and the constraints are linearized during the optimization process and gradient-based Simplex method and SLP(Sequential Linear Programming) have been employed. With the assumption of two dimensional inviscid flow for internal flow field, the analyses of the nonequilibrium chemical reactions for 8 steps 7 species lave been performed. To determined the tube length, ram tube internal flow field is assumed to be in a quasi-steady state and the flow velocity is divided into several subregions with equal interval. Hence the thrust coefficients and accelerations for corresponding subregions are obtained and integrated for the whole velocity region. With the proposed design optimization techniques, the total ram tube length had been reduced $19\%$ within 7 design iterations. This optimization procedure can be directly applied to the multi-stage, multi-premixture ram accelerator design optimization problems.

Optimization of 26 design variables selected from suspension characteristics for Korean High Speed Train (KHST) is performed according to the minimization of 58 responses which represent running safety and ride comfort for KHST and analyzed by using the each response surface model from stochastic design experiments. Sensitivity of design variables is also analyzed through the response surface model which ineffective design prameters to the performance index are screened by using stepwise regression method. The response surface models are used for optimizing design variables through simplex algorism. Values of performance index simulated by optimized design parameters are totally lower than those by initial design parameters. It shows that this method is effective for optimizing multi-design variables to multi-object function.
It is necessary to develop an efficient optimization technique to optimize engineering structures that have given design spaces, discrete design values, and several design goals. In this study, an optimum algorithm based on the genetic algorithm was applied to the multi-object problem to obtain an optimum solution that simultaneously minimizes the structural weight and construction cost of panel blocks in ship structures. The cost model was used in this study, which includes the cost of adjusting the weld-induced deformation and applying the deformation control methods, in addition to the cost of the material and the welding cost usually included in the normal cost model. By using the proposed cost model, more realistic optimum design results can be expected.

In this paper, we proposed a feature selection method using Binary Particle Swarm Optimization(BPSO) and Mutual information. This proposed method consists of the feature selection part for selecting candidate feature subset by mutual information and the optimal feature selection part for choosing optimal feature subset by BPSO in the candidate feature subsets. In the candidate feature selection part, we computed the mutual information of all features, respectively and selected a candidate feature subset by the ranking of mutual information. In the optimal feature selection part, optimal feature subset can be found by BPSO in the candidate feature subset. In the BPSO process, we used multi-object function to optimize both accuracy of classifier and selected feature subset size. DNA expression dataset are used for estimating the performance of the proposed method. Experimental results show that this method can achieve better performance for pattern recognition problems than conventional ones.
Numerical optimization techniques combined with a three-dimensional thin-layer Navier-Stokes solver are presented to find an optimum shape of a stator blade in an axial compressor through calculations of single stage rotor-stator flow. Governing differential equations are discretized using an explicit finite difference method and solved by a multi-stage Runge-Kutta scheme. Baldwin-Lomax model is chosen to describe turbulence. A spatially-varying time-step and an implicit residual smoothing are used to accelerate convergence. A steady mixing approach is used to pass information between stator and rotor blades. For numerical optimization, searching direction is found by the steepest decent and conjugate direction methods, and the golden section method is used to determine optimum moving distance along the searching direction. The object of present optimization is to maximize efficiency. An optimum stacking line is found to design a custom-tailored 3-dimensional blade for maximum efficiency with the other parameters fixed.

In nuclear power plant, it has been the important object to reduce the occupational radiation exposure (ORE). Recently, the optimization concept of management science has been studied to reduce the ORE in nuclear power plant. In optimization of the worker allocation, the collective dose, working time, individual dose, an total number of worker must be considered and their priority orders must be thought because the main constraint is necessary for determining the constraints variable of the radiological worker allocation problem. The ultimate object of this study s to look into the change of the optimal allocation of the radiological worker as priority order changes. In this study, the priority order is the characteristic of goal programming that is a kind of multi-objective linear programming. From a result of study using goal programming, the total number of worker and collective dose of worker have changed as the priority order has changed and the collective dose limit have played an important role in reducing the ORE.

The object color does not look same under the different light source. It depends on the surface spectral reflectance and the spectral distribution of light source. Therefore we should find the surface spectral reflectance of object color and the spectral distribution of light source for color reproduction. Using Wiener estimation, we can estimate the spectral reflectance from low dimensional images obtained with multi-band image acquisition system. The kind and the number of imaging filters have the effect on the estimation of the spectral reflectance. Therefore it is important that optimal filters are selected to minimize the error of the result. In this paper, we describe methods to select optimal filters with minimum error between measured and estimated surface spectral reflectance and to estimate surface spectral reflectance of Munsell color chart from six multi-band images by using Wiener estimation.
The objective of supply chain planning is to satisfy the requirements for minimizing inventory costs, transportation costs, and lead times throughout the supply, production and distribution stage dispersed geographically. Therefore, the supply chain planning system should have functionalities to resolve complex optimization problems that have characteristics of multi-stage and multi-product. Ant the system should also support collaborative decision making among distributed business partners. In this study, we proposed a distributed architecture for the supply chain planning system. To do this, we analyzed functional requirements by using IDEF-0(ICAM Definition-0) methodology, defined required components, and designed each component by using object-oriented methodology. We implemented a prototype system based on CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) to show that the proposed distributed architecture based on component technology is feasible and can solve supply chain planning problem collaboratively.
In this paper, a multi-object optimization based on a progressive quadratic response surface method (PQRSM) and a time stepping finite element method (FEM) is proposed. The new PQRSM and FEM are able to decide optimal geometric and electric variables of the switched reluctance motor (SRM) with two objective functions: torque ripple minimization and average torque maximization. The result of the optimum design for SRM show an improved performance of motor and a relationship between torque ripple and average torque.
A fiber spool with ultra-low vibration sensitivity has been demonstrated for the ultra-narrow-linewidth fiber-stabilized laser by the multi-object orthogonal experimental design method, which can achieve the optimization object and analysis of influence levels without extensive computation. According to a test of 4 levels and 4 factors, an L16 (44) orthogonal table is established to design orthogonal experiments. The vibration sensitivities along the axial and radial directions and the normalized sums of the vibration sensitivities are determined as single objects and comprehensive objects, respectively. We adopt the range analysis of object values to obtain the influence levels of the four design parameters on the single objects and the comprehensive object. The optimal parameter combinations are determined by both methods of comprehensive balance and evaluation. Based on the corresponding fractional frequency stability of ultra-narrow-linewidth fiber-stabilized lasers, we obtain the final optimal parameter combination A3B1C2D1, which can achieve the fiber spool with vibration sensitivities of 10-12/g magnitude. This work is the first time to use an orthogonal experimental design method to optimize the vibration sensitivities of fiber spools, providing an approach to design the fiber spool with ultra-low vibration sensitivity.
