Cellular neural networks(CNN) are neural networks that have locally connected characteristics and real-time image processing. Locally connected characteristics are suitable for VLSI implementation. It also has applications in such areas as image processing and pattern recognition. In this thesis cellular neural networks are used for feature detection in number recognition at the stage of re-processing. The four or six directional shadow detectors are used in numbers recognition. At the stage of classification, this result of feature detection was simulated by using a multi-layer back Propagation neural network. The experiments indicate that the CNN feature detectors capture good features for number recognition tasks.
The back propagation algorithm took a long time to learn the input patterns and was difficult to train the additional or repeated learning patterns. So Aleksander proposed the binary neural network which could overcome the disadvantages of BP Network. But it had the limitation of repeated learning and was impossible to extract a generalized pattern. In this paper, we proposed a dynamic 3 dimensional Neuro System which was consisted of a learning network which was based on weightless neural network and a feedback module which could accumulate the characteristic. The proposed system was enable to train additional and repeated patterns. Also it could be produced a generalized pattern by putting a proper threshold into each learning-net's discriminator which was resulted from learning procedures. And then we reused the generalized pattern to elevate the recognition rate. In the last processing step to decide right category, we used maximum response detector. We experimented using the MNIST database of NIST and got 99.3% of right recognition rate for training data.

This paper presents Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models for evaluating bond strength of deformed, plain and cold formed bars in low strength concrete. The ANN models were implemented using the experimental database developed by conducting experiments in three different universities on total of 138 pullout and 108 splitting specimens under monotonic loading. The key parameters examined in the experiments are low strength concrete, bar development length, concrete cover, rebar type (deformed, cold-formed, plain) and diameter. These deficient parameters are typically found in non-engineered reinforced concrete structures of developing countries. To develop ANN bond model for each bar type, four inputs (the low strength concrete, development length, concrete cover and bar diameter) are used for training the neurons in the network. Multi-Layer-Perceptron was trained according to a back-propagation algorithm. The ANN bond model for deformed bar consists of a single hidden layer and the 9 neurons. For Tor bar and plain bars the ANN models consist of 5 and 6 neurons and a single hidden layer, respectively. The developed ANN models are capable of predicting bond strength for both pull and splitting bond failure modes. The developed ANN models have higher coefficient of determination in training, validation and testing with good prediction and generalization capacity. The comparison of experimental bond strength values with the outcomes of ANN models showed good agreement. Moreover, the ANN model predictions by varying different parameters are also presented for all bar types.

This paper presents an emotion recognition and its expression system of an intelligent robot like a home robot or a service robot. Emotion recognition method in the robot is used by a facial image. We use a motion and a position of many facial features. apply a tracking algorithm to recognize a moving user in the mobile robot and eliminate a skin color of a hand and a background without a facial region by using the facial region detecting algorithm in objecting user image. After normalizer operations are the image enlarge or reduction by distance of the detecting facial region and the image revolution transformation by an angel of a face, the mobile robot can object the facial image of a fixing size. And materialize a multi feature selection algorithm to enable robot to recognize an emotion of user. In this paper, used a multi layer perceptron of Artificial Neural Network(ANN) as a pattern recognition art, and a Back Propagation(BP) algorithm as a learning algorithm. Emotion of user that robot recognized is expressed as a graphic LCD. At this time, change two coordinates as the number of times of emotion expressed in ANN, and change a parameter of facial elements(eyes, eyebrows, mouth) as the change of two coordinates. By materializing the system, expressed the complex emotion of human as the avatar of LCD.

In this paper, we propose a feature extraction method which extracts directional features of handwritten numerals by using the projection runlength. Our directional featrures are obtained from four directional images, each of which contains horizontal, vertical, right-diagonal and left-diagonal lines in entire numeral shape respectively. A conventional method which extracts directional features by using Kirsch masks generates edge-shaped double line directional images for four directions, whereas our method uses the projections and their runlengths for four directions to produces single line directional images for four directions. To obtain the directional projections for four directions from a numeral image, some preprocessing steps such as thinning and dilation are required, but the shapes of resultant directional lines are more similar to the numeral lines of input numerals. Four [$4{\times}4$] directional features of a numeral are obtained from four directional line images through a zoning method. By using a hybrid feature which is made by combining our feature with the conventional features of a mesh features, a kirsch directional feature and a concavity feature, higher recognition rates of the handwrittern numerals can be obtained. For recognition test with given features, we use a multi-layer perceptron neural network classifier which is trained with the back propagation algorithm. Through the experiments with the handwritten numeral database of Concordia University, we have achieved a recognition rate of 97.85%.

Synthetic materials with excellent thermodynamic characteristics and the merit of anti-corrosion are frequently used in buildings and constructions for enforcement of bent in stead of steel plates. Among them, many practical studies have been conducted on bond strength because of increased bond strength of FRP plates. Previous investigators identified the bond strength of FRP plates through experiments with settlement of various variables to identify the bond strength. However, the experiments to identify the bond force are difficult to be conducted because they requires large expenses and long time for equipment arrangement, thus, are conducted with limitation. In this study, for bond experiment, optimum neural network model was developed with use of Back-propagation and Conjugate gradient technique of previous investigators. Learning was performed with use of the variables of previous investigators in developed neural network model so as to identify the bond strength of FRP plates. for verification of developed model, credibility and excellence was proven by comparing with the models of previous investigators.

In this paper a control chart pattern recognition methodology based on the back propagation algorithm and Multi layer perceptron, a neural computing theory, is presented. This pattern recognition algorithm, suitable for real time statistical process control. evaluates observations routinely collected for control charting to determine whether a Pattern, such as a cycle. trend or shift, which is exists in the data. This approach is promising because of its flexible training and high speed computation with low-end workstation. The artificial neural network methodology is developed utilizing the delta learning rule, sigmoid activation function with two hidden layers. In a computer integrated manufacturing environment, the operator need not routinely monitor the control chart but, rather, can be alerted to patterns by a computer signal generated by the proposed system.
Emotion affects many parts of human life such as learning ability, behavior and judgment. It is important to understand human nature. Emotion can only be inferred from facial expressions or gestures, what it actually is. In particular, emotion is difficult to classify not only because individuals feel differently about emotion but also because visually induced emotion does not sustain during whole testing period. To solve the problem, we acquired bio-signals and extracted features from those signals, which offer objective information about emotion stimulus. The emotion pattern classifier was composed of unsupervised learning algorithm with hidden nodes and feature vectors. Restricted Boltzmann machine (RBM) based on probability estimation was used in the unsupervised learning and maps emotion features to transformed dimensions. The emotion was characterized by non-linear classifiers with hidden nodes of a multi layer neural network, named deep belief network (DBN). The accuracy of DBN (about 94 %) was better than that of back-propagation neural network (about 40 %). The DBN showed good performance as the emotion pattern classifier.
A tunnel design expert system entitled NESTED is developed using the artificial neural network. The expert system includes three neural network computer models designed for the stability assessment of underground openings and the estimation of correlation between the RMR and Q systems. The expert system consists of the three models and the computerized rock mass classification programs that could be driven under the same user interface. As the structure of the neural network, a multi -layer neural network which adopts an or ror back-propagation learning algorithm is used. To set up its knowledge base from the prior case histories, an engineering database which can control the incomplete and erroneous information by learning process is developed. A series of experiments comparing the results of the neural network with the actual field observations have demonstrated the inferring capabilities of the neural network to identify the possible failure modes and the support timing. The neural network expert system thus complements the incomplete geological data and provides suitable support recommendations for preliminary design of tunnels in rock masses.
In this paper, we have implemented a gas recognition system for classification and identification of explosive gases such as methane, propane, and butane using a sensor array and an artificial neural network. Such explosive gases which can be usually detected in the oil factory and LPG pipeline are very dangerous for a human being. We analyzed the characteristics of a multi-dimensional sensor signals obtained from the nine sensors using the principal component analysis(PCA) technique. Also, we implemented a gas pattern recognizer using a multi-layer neural network with error back propagation learning algorithm, which can classify and identify the sorts of gases and concentrations for each gas. The simulation and experimental results show that the proposed gas recognition system is effective to identify the explosive gases. And also, we used DSP board(TMS320C31) to implement the proposed gas recognition system using the neural network for real time processing.
