Transducers for implantable hearing aids need to be small and to have good performance in frequency responses and vibration properties. From this viewpoint, we Proposed a multi-layer actuator with the piezoelectric single crystal, PMN-PT. for the implantable hearing aid. and verified its adequacy through finite element analyses and experiments. PMN-PT multi-layer actuator samples were fabricated by stacking fourteen layers of the PMN-PT crystal. Each layer were $0.2{\cal}mm$ thick and the actuator sample was $2.8{\cal}mm$ thick in total. We evaluated the performance of the PMN-PT actuator through impedance analyses and vibration displacement measurements, and compared the result with that of a PZT actuator. Results of all the process confirmed the feasibility of the PMN-PT actuator as a good transducer for an implantable hearing aid.

Based on graphene oxide and multi-walled carbon nanotube layers, a wireless bi-layer actuator that can be remotely controlled with an electromagnetic induction system has been developed. The graphene-based bi-layer actuator exhibits a large one-way bending deformation under eddy current stimuli due to asymmetrical responses originating from the temperature difference of the two different carbon layers. In order to validate one-way bending actuation, the coefficients of thermal expansion of carbon nanotube and graphene oxide are mathematically formulated in this study based on the atomic bonding energy related to the bonding length. The newly designed graphene-based bi-layer actuator is highly sensitive to electromagnetic wave irradiation thus it can trigger a new actuation mode for the realization of remotely controllable actuators and is expected to have potential applications in various wireless systems.
This paper describes the three dimension model and simulation results of a thermal actuator based on polyMUMPs process, known as thermal multimorph actuator. The device has potential application in micro-transducers such as atomic force microscope (AFM) tip and scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip. This device made of a multi-layer materials stack together with consisted of polysilicon, $SiO_2$ and gold. A mask layout design, three dimension model and simulation results are reported and discussed.

In this study, the modification of turbulent boundary layer flow by local wall vibration is investigated. The wall is locally vibrated using a wall deformation actuator, which moves up and down at the frequencies of 100Hz and 50Hz. Simultaneous measurements of the streamwise velocities in the spanwise direction are performed at several wall-normal and streamwise locations using an in-house multi-channel hot wire anemometer and a spanwise hot-wire-probe rake. The mean velocity is reduced in most places due to the wall vibration and its reduced amount becomes small as flow goes downstream. Interestingly, the mean velocity is found to increase very near the wall and near the actuator. This is due to the motion induced by the streamwise vortices which are generated by the downward motion of the actuator. In case of the streamwise velocity fluctuations, their magnitude increases as compared to the unperturbed turbulent boundary layer, and the increased amount becomes small as the flow moves downstream. The modified flow field at the forcing frequency of 50Hz is not much different from that of 100Hz, except the reduced amount of modification.

The piezoelectric bimorph film, which, as an actuator, can generate more effective displacement than the usual PVDF film, is used to control the turbulent boundary-layer flow. The change of wall pressures inside the turbulent boundary layer is observed by using the multi-channel microphone array flush-mounted on the surface when actuation at the non-dimensional frequency $f_b^+$:=0.008 and 0.028 is applied to the turbulent boundary layer. The wall pressure characteristics by the actuation to produce local displacement are more dominantly influenced by the size of the actuator module than the actuation frequency. The movement of large-scale turbulent structures to the upper layer is found to be the main mechanism of the reduction in the wall- pressure energy spectrum when the 700$700{\nu}/u_{\tau}$-long bimorph film is periodically actuated at the non- dimensional frequency $f_b^+$:=0.008 and 0.028. The biomorph actuator is triggered with the time delay for the active forcing at a single frequency when a 1/8' pressure-type, pin-holed microphone sensor detects the large-amplitude pressure event by the turbulent spot. The wall-pressure energy in the late-transitional boundary layer is partially reduced near the convection wavenumber by the open-loop control based on the large amplitude event.

This paper presents a method to minimize the initial deflection of a multi-layer piezoelectric microactuator without loosing its piezoelectric deflection performance required for light modulating micromirror devices. The multi-layer piezoelectric actuator composed of PZT silicon nitride and platinum layers deflects or buckles due to the gradient of residual stress. Based on the structural analysis results and relationship between process conditions and mechanical properties we have modified the fabrication process and the thickness of thin film layers to reduce the initial residual stress deflection without decreasing its piezoelectric deflection performance. The modified designs fabricated by surface-micromachining process achieved the 77% reduction of the initial deflection compared with that of the conventional method based on the measured micromechanical material properties is applicable to the design refinement of multi-layer MEMS devices and micromechanical structures.

In wireless sensor and actuator networks (WSANs), the network lifetime is an important criterion to measure the performance of the WSAN system. Generally, the network lifetime is mainly affected by the energy of sensors. However, the energy of sensors is limited, and the batteries of sensors cannot be replaced and charged. So, it is crucial to make energy consumption efficient. WSAN introduces multiple actuators that can be regarded as multiple collectors to gather data from their respective surrounding sensors. But how to deploy actuators to reduce the energy consumption of sensors and increase the manageability of the network is an important challenge. This research optimizes actuators deployment by a proposed probabilistic mutation multi-layer particle swarm optimization algorithm to maximize the coverage of actuators to sensors and reduce the energy consumption of sensors. Simulation results show that this method is effective for improving the coverage rate and reducing the energy consumption.
The thermal behavior of binder in multi-layer actuator has an effect on the properties of actuator. Binder burn-out process and thermal degradation mechanism of PNN-PZT/Acrylic binder were analyzed by FTIR, DSC, TGA. Binder was burnt out by two step. In oxygen atomsphere, thermal degradation was activated and final residue was minimized to 5%.

This paper presents an efficient meshless method for analyzing cracked piezoelectric structures subjected to mechanical and electrical loading. The method employs an element free Galerkin (EFG) formulation and an enriched basic function as well as special shape functions that contain discontinuous derivatives. Based on the moving least squares (MLS) interpolation approach, The EFG method is one of the promising methods for dealing with problems involving progressive crack growth. Since the method is meshless and no element connectivity data are needed, the burdensome remeshing procedure required in the conventional finite element method (FEM) is avoided. The numerical results show that the proposed method yields an accurate near-tip stress field in an infinite piezoelectric plate containing an interior hole. Another example is to study a ceramic multilayer actuator. The proposed model was found to be accurate in the simulation of stress and electric field concentrations due to the abrupt end of an internal electrode.

Non-linear behaviors of multilayer piezoelectric ceramic actuator (MCA) were investigated under electrical and mechanical stress. DC 100 V bias was applied to the MCA to obtain displacement. Laser vibrometer, which using Doppler effect, was employed to characterize displacement caused by $d_{33}$ mode of MCA. To understand this non-linear behavior of MCA, displacement was measured and compared under different load states. By increasing load, electric field-induced strain and piezoelectric constant($d_{33}$) of MCA was decreased. We attribute this phenomenon to the domain wall motion and depoling of MCA under heavy load.
