Fixed Relays for Next Generation Wireless Systems - System Concept and Performance Evaluation

  • This work presents a concept and the related analysis of the traffic performance for a wireless broadband system based on fixed relay stations acting as wireless bridges. The analysis focuses on the important performance indicators end-to-end throughput and delay, taking into account the effects of an automated repeat request protocol. An extension to a MAC frame based access protocol like IEEE 802.11e, 802.15.3, 802.16a, and HIPERLAN2 is outlined and taken as basis for the calculations. The system is intended for both dense populated areas as an overlay to cellular radio systems and to provide wide-area broad-band coverage. The two possible deployment scenarios for both dense urban and wide-area environments are introduced. Analytical and validating simulation results are shown, proving the suitability of the proposed concept for both of the mentioned scenarios. It is established that the fixed relaying concept is well suited to substantially contribute to provide high capacity cellular broad-band radio coverage in next generation (NG) cellular wireless broadband systems.

Genetic Algorithm based Methodology for Network Performance Optimization (유전자 알고리즘을 이용한 WDM 네트워크 최적화 방법)

  • This paper considers the multi-objective optimization of a multi-service arrayed waveguide grating-based single-hop WDM network with the two conflicting objectives of maximizing throughput while minimizing delay. This paper presents a genetic algorithm based methodology for finding the optimal throughput-delay tradeoff curve, the so-called Pareto-optimal frontier. Genetic algorithm based methodology provides the network architecture parameters and the Medium Access Control protocol parameters that achieve the Pareto-optima in a computationally efficient manner. The numerical results obtained with this methodology provide the Pareto-optimal network planning and operation solution for a wide range of traffic scenarios. The presented methodology is applicable to other networks with a similar throughput-delay tradeoff.

A Reservation-based HWMP Routing Protocol Design Supporting E2E Bandwidth in TICN Combat Wireless Network (TICN 전투무선망에서의 종단간 대역폭을 보장하는 예약 기반 HWMP 라우팅 프로토콜 설계)

  • In tactical environment, tactical wireless networks are generally comprised of Tactical MANETs(T-MANETs) or Tactical WMNs(T-WMNs). The most important services in tactical network are voice and low rate data such as command control and situation awareness. These data should be forwarded via multi-hop in tactical wireless networks. Urgent and mission-critical data should be protected in this environment, so QoS(Quality of Service) must be guaranteed for specific type of traffic for satisfying the requirement of a user. In IEEE 802.11s, TDMA-based MAC protocol, MCCA(MCF Controlled Channel Access), has a function of resource reservation. But 802.11s protocol can not guarantee the end-to-end QoS, because it only supports reservation with neighbors. In this paper, we propose the routing protocol, R-HWMP(Reservation-based HWMP) which has the resource reservation to support the end-to-end QoS. The proposed protocol can reserve the channel slots and find optimal path in T-WMNs. We analyzed the performance of the proposed protocol and showed that end-to-end QoS is guaranteed using NS-2 simulation.

Random Backoff Scheme of Emergency Warning Message for Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communications (차량 간 통신에서 충돌을 완화하기 위한 랜덤 백오프 방안)

  • In this paper, we propose a random backoff scheme for Emergency Warning Messages (EWMs) in the vehicle-to-vehicle environment. The EWMs are disseminated from a vehicle that detects an emergency situation to other vehicles in a multi-hop fashion. Since the vehicle-to-vehicle communication based on IEEE 802.11 adapts CSMA/CA, the density of vehicles increase the probability of collisions between transmissions. Moreover, in the presence of background traffic, the EWM should have a higher priority than that of other messages in neighboring vehicles. To that end, we propose the Distant-Dependent Adaptive Backoff (DDAB) scheme, which set a different contention window for random backoff depending on the distance from the sender to the receiver. In the case when a vehicle is expected to located in the outskirts of the communication boundary, the proposed scheme makes the contention window size small in order to compete the background traffic transmission. Otherwise the contention window is set to a large number to reduce the collision possibility among the EWM transmissions. Via simulations, we show that the proposed scheme performs better than the previous schemes for EWM.

Effective Emergency-Warning Message Transmission in the Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communication Environment (차량 간 통신 환경에서 효과적인 위험 경고 메시지 전송 방안)

  • In this paper, we propose an algorithm to improve collision avoidance in Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) networks based on IEEE 802.11p. Since IEEE 802.11p adopts CSMA/CA as a multiple access scheme and an emergency warning message (EWM) is delivered to behind vehicles in a multi-hop manner, due to transmission collision, the more vehicles in the vehicle chain results in a longer delay. The longer delay increases the possibility of a rear-end collision. In order to ensure message reception with low latency, we consider implicit acknowledgement of a broadcasted EWM message and propose an algorithm to reduce redundant message transactions, called Two-Way Implicit Acknowledgement (TWIA). By simulations, we show that our proposed algorithm can reduce the latency until the last car receives the message by 9% and the success rate every car receives the message within 0.7sec by 12% at 100 fixed-number-of-car environment.
